The 24/7 Wall St. Top Analyst Calls of the Week were in shares of the following: AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T); Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (NYSE: ADP); Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY); Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK); Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN); E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC); J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP); J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM); Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS); Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS); Jefferies Group, Inc. (NYSE: JEF); KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ: KLAC); Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE); McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD); Michael Kors Holdings Limited (NYSE: KORS); Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX); Vistaprint NV (NASDAQ: VPRT); and Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA).

We have covered these in more detailed summaries below and some of these will have links to broader coverage calls.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) has been a bit under pressure and frankly its earnings did not help the situation for the bulls despite some positive metrics. Now there is a bit more caution as the stock was reinstated in coverage on Friday at Credit Suisse: with a NEUTRAL and a mere $30.00 price target. This was one of Jim Cramer’s 4 FAVORITE DJIA PICKS FOR 2012 and it is the highest yield of the DJIA.

Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (NYSE: ADP) met its second quarter earnings estimates this last week but apparently there are some valuation concerns despite the CFO seeing some continued positive trends in the economy. On Thursday there were two downgrades: Cut to NEUTRAL at Citigroup and Cut to MARKET PERFORM at Wells Fargo. Shares were around $57.oo pre-earnings and ended the week down at $55.34 and that may be another failed break-out attempt on the chart as the year high is $57.10.

Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is supposed to be down and out with absolutely nothing going for it. In fact, its real risk is that no one under 30 or so may ever go there again. Not so fast, according to Credit Suisse as the firm reinstated coverage with an OUTPERFORM rating and with a call of almost 30% upside to its $32.00 price target (versus $28.21 target from Thomson Reuters. This drove shares up 1.7% on Friday when the broad market was down.

Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK) is the pure-play when it comes to investing in natural gas. It is no secret that nat-gas is in the tank. Apparently J.P.Morgan just couldn’t take the pressure any longer. The analyst team there cut Chesapeake to UNDERWEIGHT on Thursday… That is just a “Sell” masqueraded by vocabulary.

Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN) was given two calls of caution or at least calls with no enthusiasm despite its shares having more than doubled from the lows. Zacks maintained a NEUTRAL rating with a $14.00 target, while the team at Cantor Fitzgerald started it with only a HOLD rating. Both calls came on Wednesday and Wednesday’s was Dendreon’s highest price of the week.

E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC) is still supposed to be a buyout target according to the great analyst predictions of 2012, even though the company’s review ended with nothing. Earnings stank up the joint and the promise (or forecast) of exceptionally low rates through 2014 offers no comfort for earnings at online brokers. The stock was cut to NEUTRAL at Goldman Sachs this week. Keep in mind that Goldman Sachs was the firm hired to go find a buyer for E*TRADE. Not promising at all.

Combined with the lack of a solution the Greek debt swap and lackluster earnings from several major US companies, the DJIA has remained down all day though the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 have turned positive (barely). There’s still about half an hour to go before the close, so there’s still some hope that all the indexes will finish the week on an uptick, no matter how small. WTI crude oil is down -0.13% at $99.57/barrel and Brent crude is up 0.55% at $111.40/barrel. Gold is higher by 0.50% at $1,738.50.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 74 points to 12,660.61 (-0.58%), the NASDAQ rose more than 11 points (0.40%) to 2,816.55, and the S&P 500 fell -0.16% or about 2 points to 1,316.33.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Best Buy Co. (NYSE: JCP) raised to ‘overweight’ at Piper Jaffray and maintained as ‘buy’ with target price raised to $49 at Argus; and Kimco Realty Crop. (NYSE: KIM) cut to ‘neutral’ at Citigroup.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Cepheid (NASDAQ: CPHD) is up more than 25% at $42.98 after posting new 52-week high of $43.03 earlier today. The medical diagnostics equipment maker has boosted its sales outlook and is enjoying a halo effect from the hostile takeover bid for Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN).

Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: INFI) is down -40% at $5.97. The drug maker has cancelled further trials of a pancreatic cancer drug that does not perform better than placebo.

Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP)… Bad News Is Good News! Our take was that the company big drop was a chance for investors to get in ahead of the Ron Johnson presentation for the company’s new store concept. After being the brains behind the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) retail initiative, how could you NOT follow Ron Johnson? The concept is off to a rocking good start despite that nothing has really yet happened in the numbers. It is all in the guidance and the concept and the hope that Ron Johnson’s presentation for guidance will drive value in the year or two ahead. So, what is the outlook now for investors?

The guidance on January 5 was victim of soft sales in the first two months of the quarter generating slightly negative same-store sales for its fourth quarter with non-GAAP earnings coming in a range of $0.65 to $0.70 earnings per share.

Our thesis was simple” For new investors, this is not a fourth quarter story. This is not a story of guidance for the current quarter, and it may not even be a story of strong results in 2012… Ron Johnson is set to transform the look and feel of this company entirely.”

Penney’s shares at the time of our call were down over 6% on that day at $32.75. The problem now, if there is a problem, is that the new concept unveiling and the leaner retail worker structure has met a guidance presentation all in one week.

A gain of 15% to $39.48 on Thursday now has shares up 20%. Why is this a problem? The consensus analyst target is down under $34.00 and the 52-week trading range is $23.44 to $41.00. It was known that Ron Johnson was going to use his Apple magic to transform the company. It was known that he was going to have the presentations.

A 20% gain in three weeks is generally a gift no matter how you cut it. Even if analysts raise their price target objectives substantially, at a minimum we would only look to enter on a pullback now. Taking at least some profit at this point would not hurt anyone even if it is only on part of the position.

Former Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) retail chief Ron Johnson, hired to achieve a turnaround at JCPenney (NYSE: JCP), is off to a terrible start. The wobbly department store company may not recover for a long time from the initial trouble during his tenure.

Several media reports say that Johnson will lay off several thousand workers. The cuts make sense from a financial standpoint, but their announcement should have been handled better. Press leaks made it appear that JCPenney is desperate to cut costs, which is probably true. There is no need to telegraph the retailer’s problems, though. It could have shown the need to carefully cut costs as part of a broader strategy.

JCPenney set a deal to distribute Martha Stewart Omnimedia (NYSE: MSO) products in its stores. It took a 16.6% equity position in the media company for which it paid $38.5 million. Rival Macy’s (NYSE: M) says it has an exclusive arrangement for Stewart products that dates from 2007. JCPenney management, which includes Johnson, must have known of the risk of a Macy’s action. And Martha Stewart’s brand is aged. Her company is in trouble, which probably would have accelerated without the JCPenney infusion. Now, JCPenney has the distraction of a legal battle that involves its larger and more successful rival.

In addition to these tactical problems, JCPenney’s fortunes continue to erode. Same-store sales are expected to show erosion for the past quarter. Revenue dropped 2.3% in the five weeks that ended December 31, compared to the same period last year.

JCPenney will host a two-day discussion about its prospects on January 25 and January 26. It has been described by the company as an event at which senior management “will outline the Company’s plan to transform JCPenney into America’s favorite store.” The characterization of the event is grandiose. It implies that new management already has most, if not all, of the answers for stemming a long-term decline. The change actually will have to be very gradual. JCPenney’s sales and brand are too badly damaged. Recent events show that the task of fixing the company becomes more difficult with each passing week.

C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP) is getting hit pretty hard this morning. While current investors will not appreciate the drop, this is actually great news for those investors who wanted to get into the stock or who missed the boat in a transformation story. It is also easy to hedge the risk.

Shares had risen from under $26 to over $35 based upon Ron Johnson’s taking the helm. Prior to that, J.C. Penney had been somewhat on life support compared to Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M) and Saks Inc. (NYSE: SKS). It did manage to do better than Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE: KSS).

The retail chain posted December same-store sales of 0.3% versus an expected drop of -0.1%. Last year the company posted a same-store sales increase of 3.7%. The outlook is as follows: “Due to the softer sales performance during the first two months of the quarter, the Company now anticipates that comparable store sales for the fourth quarter will be down slightly to last year. Earnings before one-time items identified below, are now expected to be in the range of $0.65 to $0.70 per share on a non-GAAP basis, reflecting lower sales and higher markdown activity than anticipated throughout the quarter.” The consensus estimate had been $1.08 EPS.

Investors who missed getting in on this one may look at the news with a smile because it at least allows them a closer chance of getting in on a transformation in the making. Ron Johnson, the brains behind the retail effort of the hugely successful stores of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), has taken over as CEO. For new investors, this is not a fourth quarter story. This is not a story of guidance for the current quarter, and it may not even be a story of strong results in 2012.

Ron Johnson is set to transform the look and feel of this company entirely. The company has already signed a deal with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. (NYSE: MSO) for branded merchandise for years ahead. Johnson is going to unveil his new store design later this month (January 25) and here is a photo of the invite that was sent to me last night:

Penney’s shares are down about 6.2% at $32.75 and the 52-week range is $23.44 to $41.00. This drop still only gets the stock back down to the prior consensus price target of $32.31 from Thomson Reuters. Unfortunately, this turnaround story is not cheap against other retailers on a forward earnings valuation. That happens to be the case in many turnarounds as investors sometimes pay a premium to get in line.

New investors and those on the sidelines may hope that the stock gets back into the high $20′s. That may happen and it may not. When you consider that Ron Johnson is likely going to revamp the company from the ground up and give a major facelift to bring the Apple-cool through the doors and when you consider that Apple’s playbook has been to “underpromise and over-deliver,” this drop may be a blessing for new and interested investors.

The good news is that the stock also offers stock options so investors van hedge their turnaround bets rather easily. Options expire on January 20, 2012, but the February options make it easy to invest with providing downside protection of about only 5% risk in the next six weeks. For a turnaround story under a great new retail leader, that might be a gift.

The other side of the coin is simple, even if hard to consider: What if Ron Johnson flops? It is easy to argue that clothing, accessories and household products have no catalyst like Apple did a decade ago.

Stay tuned.

JON C. OGG

A look at the customer service scores of the largest retailers proves that point. 24/7 Wall St. examined the internet retailers with the best and worst customer satisfaction ratings based on ForeSee’s Holiday E-retail Satisfaction Index.

Read the ten worst online stores this holiday

To put those customer service rankings in context, we looked at how the parent companies that own the websites have performed recently. We found that a strong customer service rating often coincides with a company that has widely regarded brands.

It begs the question: Does Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) have such a high customer service ranking because so many consumers love the Apple brands? Or, is Apple’s customer service for online shoppers really superior to that of other e-commerce businesses? Apple is tied for second place in the index. Amazon.com is in first place. It also has a sterling reputation with consumers, as do some of its major products like the Kindle.

At the bottom of the ForeSee index are Gap (NYSE: GPS), Sony (NYSE: SNE) and Overstock (NASDAQ: OSTK). Gap recently said it would close 21% of its U.S. flagship stores. Sony has had trouble gaining sales for its PCs, games, smartphone and TV products. Overstock, an also-ran online department store, was founded in the days of the dial-up internet. It is hard to see how any of these could be at the top of the list. Or, perhaps if they were at the top of the list, they would not be in such deep trouble now.

ForeSee’s E-retail Satisfaction Index included the top 40 retailers by sales. The company surveyed 8,500 customers between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Despite its shortcomings, 24/7 Wall St. used the data from ForeSee as a foundation, because it is a reasonable measurement of the experience that consumers have with specific e-commerce sites, whether those sites are part of highly successful companies or ones on the verge of failure.

There is also some evidence that a few troubled retailers have actually performed well online. Whether that success is enough to save the companies themselves is impossible to tell. One such example is Avon (NYSE: AVP), with online service that is tied for second among all e-commerce sites in the ForeSee index. But Avon recently posted a disastrous quarter, and its CEO of 12 years was dismissed. Similarly, JCPenney’s (NYSE: JCP) online operations’ customer satisfaction is equal to Apple’s, which is also tied for second place in the ForeSee rankings. However, JCPenney has lost sales to big-box retailers such as Walmart (NYSE: WMT) for years. It is worth noting that JCPenney just hired the head of retail stores at Apple to turn the bricks-and-mortar retailer around. Apple is one of the few companies that was successful online long before it began to build physical stores.

These are the the companies with the best and worst online customer satisfaction. To draw our conclusions about why they are on the list and what the relationship is between the companies and their e-commerce operations, we examined three factors: the ForeSee satisfaction data, the annual sales of each of the companies, and the amount of traffic each site had in November — the most recent month measured by audience research firm Compete.com. Foresee describes its rating as “Average customer satisfaction with the top 40 U.S. e-retail websites increased by one point this year to tie 2009’s all time high score of 79 on the study’s 100-point scale. Satisfaction scores for individual e retailers span a 16-point range, from a high of 88 (Amazon) to a low of 72 (Overstock).”
