The three major U.S. stock indexes opened higher this morning as expectations had been raised that the European Central Bank would institute some kind of bond-buying program to shore up the Eurozone’s crippled economy. Data on US employment and new claims for unemployment benefits came in better than expected, but didn’t have much impact on equities before the market opened. The ECB’s decision to go ahead with the bond purchases really drove equity prices higher this morning, and kept them well higher all day. If tomorrow’s non-farm payrolls report beats expectations of around 125,000 new jobs added, equities could take off again.

The U.S. dollar index is lower today, now down 0.21% at 81.062. The GSCI commodity index is down 0.5% today at 668.72, with commodities prices mostly higher and corn remaining below $8.00/bushel. WTI crude oil closed up 0.2% today, at $95.53/barrel. Brent crude trades up 0.46% at $113.61/barrel. Natural gas is down 0.8% today to $2.772/thousand cubic feet. Gold closed at $1,705.60/ounce, up 0.7% today, the yellow metal’s highest settlement price since March.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 244 points to 13,291.93 (1.87%), the NASDAQ rose nearly 67 points (2.17%) to 3,185.31, and the S&P 500 rose 2.04% or nearly 29 points to 1,432.11.

(NYSE: MWW) raised to ‘outperform’ at Zacks; and SunTrust Banks Inc. (NYSE: STI) raised to ‘overweight’ at JPMorgan.

(NASDAQ: LAYN) is down 5% at $18.05.

Earnings releases scheduled before markets open on Friday morning include Mattress Firm Holding Co. The drop in US unemployment benefits claims didn’t spur much buying, nor did news of the smaller US trade deficit in April. Trading volume has been light today, with just 400 million shares trading hands on the NYSE. Going into the last hour of trading the DJIA is up about 0.5%, the Nasdaq is up about 0.6%, and the S&P 500 is up about 0.8%, and all finished the day higher by less than 1%.

The US dollar index rose today, now up 0.55% at 82.506. The GSCI commodity index is fractionally at 592.05, with commodities prices mostly lower today on the stronger dollar. WTI crude oil closed down -0.9%% at $84.10/barrel. Brent crude trades down -0.24% at $99.69/barrel. Natural gas rose about 1.1% today to $2.299/thousand cubic feet. Gold settled up 0.2% today, at $1,591.40/ounce, but took a weekly loss of about -2%.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up about 93 points to 12,553.97(0.75%), the NASDAQ rose more than 27 points (0.97%) to 2,858.42, and the S&P 500 rose 0.81% or nearly 11 points to 1,325.63.

There were several <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/06/08/top-analyst-upgrades-downgrades-aeo-avp-bont-csco-cort-jnpr-kmi-len-lulu-ntap-phm-qcom-rvbd-sd-sti-rig-ve/"title="Top Analyst Upgrades & Downgrades (AEO, AVP, BONT, CSCO, CORT, JNPR, KMI, LEN, LULU, NTAP, PHM, QCOM, RVBD, SD, STI, RIG, VE)" >analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) started as ‘buy’ at Citigroup; SandRidge Energy Inc. (NYSE: SD) started as ‘outperform’ at RBC Capital; Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a target price of $80 at Argus; Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI) raised to ‘overweight’ at Morgan Stanley; and Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN) cut from ‘neutral’ to ‘sell’ at Citigroup.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have been scarce, but here are some price changes for reporting companies as of the last half hour of trading today: Exide Technologies (NASDAQ: XIDE) is up 16.3% at $2.85; Piedmont Natural Gas Co. Inc. (NYSE: PNY) is up 0.3% at $31.71; Ferrellgas Partners LP (NYSE: FGP) is up 6.9% at $17.25; and KMG Chemicals Inc.
As we approach the quarter’s end there are fewer and fewer notable earnings reports scheduled. Next week we are scheduled to get earnings reports from Finisar Corp. (NASDAQ: FNSR), Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. That prediction turned out to be solid, as about 80% of Greek bondholders agreed to the swap, taking pressure of the Greeks at least for the time being. The US new jobless claims number came in a bit higher than expected this morning, but traders hardly noticed. Tomorrow’s non-farm payrolls report is the one everyone’s waiting for, with a consensus estimate of 210,000 new jobs. The dollar opened weaker today, and has continued to trickle down with the dollar index down -0.74% at 79.123. Crude oil was higher today, with WTI crude settling up 0.4% at $106.58/barrel and Brent crude up 1.17% at $125.57/barrel. Gold settled higher by 0.9% at $1,698.70/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 70 points to 12,907.87 (0.55%), the NASDAQ rose more than 34 points (1.18%) to 2,970.42, and the S&P 500 rose 0.98% or more than 13 points to 1,365.91.

Today’s wholesale inventory reported showed a gain of 1.6% and the initial jobless claims were substantially lower than expectations of 395,000, at 381,000. The two reports probably cancelled each other out as word hit the street that Europe is forecasting weaker growth and that today’s expected interest rate reduction was agreed with less than a unanimous vote by the ECB. The stress test results for European banks were released today, causing shares in some European banks to fall. WTI crude has fallen by more than $2 to $98.33/barrel and Brent crude is also down by about $1.65 at $107.86. Gold is down nearly -2%, at $1,710.40.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 198 points to 11,997.93 (-1.63%), the NASDAQ fell nearly 53 points (-1.99%) to 2,596.38, and the S&P 500 fell -2.11% or nearly 27 points to 1,234.35.

(NASDAQ: CSCO) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a price target of $24 at Argus. Other ratings actions today include Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU) restarted as ‘buy’ at Sterne Agee; Philip Morris International, Inc. (NYSE: PM) cut from ‘buy’ to ‘neutral’ at Nomura; and Schlumberger Ltd.

After a long period of unemployment, any upside to the jobs numbers at any point offers a helping hand to the stocks of companies that revolve around the jobs market. That is payroll services, online job search destinations, career management, uniform makers, and even head hunters. So it is no surprise that we are seeing a move higher in stocks such as Paychex Inc. (NASDAQ: PAYX), Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (NYSE: ADP), Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: MWW), Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN), Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS), and even in Korn/Ferry International (NYSE: KFY).

Paychex Inc. (NASDAQ: PAYX), a payroll services company, is up 1.7% at $26.45 versus a 52-week range of $24.65 to $32.88.

Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (NYSE: ADP), another payroll services company, is up 1.55% at $40.31 versus a 52-week range of $26.46 to $45.74.

Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: MWW), the top online destination for those looking for jobs, is up a sharp 5.77% at $12.19 versus a 52-week range of $10.01 to $19.28.

Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN), a key recruiting and labor outsource firm, is up 2.7% at $48.09 versus a 52-week range of $39.94 to $63.00.

Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS), which is the go-to name for uniforms and other corporate employee services, is trading up 1.8% at $27.15 versus a 52-week range of $23.10 to $30.85.

Korn/Ferry International (NYSE: KFY), an executive recruiting firm, a.k.a. head-hunter, is up 2.8% at $14.74 versus a 52-week range of $12.57 to $18.62.

What is interesting here about this sector is that there is generally an improving environment for companies like these. There is high demand for good temporary workers and this creates more demand for these services. The stocks have also underperformed the broad market and many of these are still very close to 52-week lows.
