Stocks opened down this morning following on weakness in Europe following the G20’s refusal to provide additional funding to the IMF. But at the end of the first hour of trading, a good report on pending US home sales seemed to tip traders to the buy side. With about half an hour to go today, all major indexes are higher and the DJIA looks set to close above 13,000. Crude oil was lower today with WTI crude finished lower by -1.1% at $108.56/barrel, and Brent crude is trading down -1.06% at $124.14/barrel. Gold settled down -0.1% at $1,774.90/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 1.5 points to 12,981.51 (-0.01%), the NASDAQ rose more than 2 points (0.08%) to 2,966.16 and the S&P 500 rose 0.14% or nearly 2 points to 1,367.59.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Sears Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) maintained as ‘underperform’ at Credit Suisse; Interpublic Group of Companies Inc. (NYSE: IPG) raised to ‘buy’ at Deutsche Bank; Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. (NASDAQ: DNKN) started as ‘buy’ at Citgroup; American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) raised to ‘buy’ at Jefferies; and United Rentals Inc. (NYSE: URI) started as ‘buy’ at Citigroup.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: The AES Corp. (NYSE: AES) is down -0.51% at $13.73; Balchem Corp. (NASDAQ: BCPC) is down about -17% at $29.52 after posting a new 52-week low of $29.35 earlier; Charter Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) is up 0.2% at $63.55 after posting a new 52-week high of $64.39 earlier this morning; Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. (NYSE: CTB) is up nearly 14% at $17.81; El Paso Corp. (NYSE: EP) is up 1.8% at $27.65, a new 52-week high; Lowes Companies Inc. (NYSE: LOW) is up 0.83% at $27.39; Quicksilver Resources Inc. (NYSE: KWK) is down -5.8% at $5.73; Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG) is up 5.34% at $53.44; and Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (NYSE: VRX) is up 5.6% at $50.62.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

ATP Oil & Gas Corp. (NASDAQ: ATPG) is up nearly 20% at $8.63. The independent oil & gas company reported a fourth successful well at its Telemark Hub project.

Cheniere Energy Partners L.P. (AMEX: CQP) is up about 14% at $23.80 after posting a new 52-week high of $24.21 earlier. The liquefied natural gas company announced an investment from Blackstone Group LP (NYSE: BX). More coverage here.

Dendreon Corp. (NASDAQ: DNDN) is down more than -20% at $11.83. The drug maker reported lower-than-expected revenues this morning. More coverage here.

Intermolecular Inc. (NASDAQ: IMI) is down more than -15% at $6.31 after posting a new 52-week low of $6.02. The semiconductor equipment and materials company’s stock is likely reacting to the bankruptcy filing by Japanese chipmaker Elpida.

Microvision Inc. (NASDAQ: MVIS) is down more than -16% at $3.28. The laser display company reported very poor earnings this morning.

Markets opened up a bit this morning, but by 10:00 a.m. equities had turned back down, with the DJIA sliding down nearly -200 points before rallying back to its opening mark in the early afternoon. Shares simply couldn’t get any traction in any sector, with heath care stocks losing the least. Crude oil rose to just above $95/barrel, and the firing of two California state oil & gas officials by the governor has raised hopes for speedier permitting in that state, where an estimated trove of 15 billion barrels of shale oil is at stake. In the last half hour of trading, equities rebounded on their way to a gain for the day.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 85 points to 12,068.39 (0.71%), the NASDAQ rose more than 9 points (0.34%) to 2,695.25, and the S&P 500 rose 0.63% or nearly 8 points to 1,261.12.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Kellogg Co. (NYSE: K) cut to ‘market perform’ at William Blair. Other changes included Alcatel-Lucent SA cut to ‘sell’ at Citigroup; Toll Brothers, Inc. (NYSE: TOL) raised to ‘buy’ at Citigroup; VeriFone Systems Inc. (NYSE: PAY) started at ‘buy’ at Citigroupl; YRC Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ: YRCW) maintained at ‘underperform’ with a price target of $0.05 at Credit Suisse; and Groupon Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN) started at ‘buy’ at Benchmark.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Tesco Corp. (NASDAQ: TESO) is down about -18%, at $13.34; BroadSoft, Inc. (NASDAQ: BSFT) is down less than -0.5%%, at $36.28; Cameco Corp. (NYSE: CCJ) is down nearly -7%, at $20.00; Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp. (NYSE: CDE) is up nearly 8%, at $29.42; Quicksilver Resources Inc. (NYSE: KWK) is down more than -9%, at $7.62; and Nordic American Tankers Ltd. (NYSE: NAT) is down nearly -4%, at $13.64.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Force Protection, Inc. (NASDAQ: FRPT) is up more than 30%, at $5.50. The armored truck maker is being acquired by General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE: GD for $5.52/share in a deal worth $360 million.

American Dental Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPI) is up nearly 79%, to $18.57. The company is being acquired by a private equity firm for $317 million, or $19/share, an 83% premium to Friday’s closing price.

Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC) is up more than 13%, at $11.20. The telecom equipment maker is being acquired by a private equity firm for about $760 million.

OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI) is down nearly -18%, at $14.23. The company revised its outlook to include a sharp drop in fourth-quarter revenues. Shares are down about -50% since the beginning of the calendar year.

Diamond Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND) is down about -15.5%, at $39.21, after posting a new 52-week low of $38.45 earlier in the day. The company’s stock continues to get beaten up due to a delay in its acquisition of the Pringles business from Proctor & Gamble (NYSE: PG) and an investigation into payments to walnut growers.

Stay tuned for Tuesday. Philadelphia Federal Reserve president Charles Plosser is giving a speech in the morning and Minneapolis Federal Reserve president Narayana Kocherlakota gives a speech in the afternoon. We have noted the following events (all times Eastern):

7:45 a.m. – International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs same-store sales

8:55 a.m. – Redbook weekly report on retail sales

(NASDAQ: AMZN), ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH), Athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHN), E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC), Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), LM Ericsson Telephone Co. (NASDAQ: ERIC), QLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QLGC), Quicksilver Resources Inc. (NYSE: KWK), and SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK). W e have offered news and color, with some more detailed data at VSInvestor.com.

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is down over 11% on active trading.

ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH) is a huge winner this morning after Microsoft licensed its architecture. Shares/ADRs up over 10% in fairly active trading.

Athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHN) is still on the road to recovery. Earnings were down but above estimates. We have seen Baird raise its rating as well. Shares are up 9% at $24.05 on only about 22,000 shares.

Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C) is down this morning by 1.5% at $4.03, but the volume is off the charts at close to 20 million right at 9:00 on word that the US Treasury will immediately sell $1.5 billion in shares.

E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC) may finally be on the path to redemption after its reverse split. Last night the company reported its first profit in about 3-years, back to the day when it had all those silly mortgages for clients. Shares are up 9.3% at $14.59 versus a new adjusted 52-week trading range of $11.15 to $20.80. Before the split this would have been millions of shares, but so far we have only seen about 40,000 shares trade hands.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) is up again as America’s only non-bailout auto-maker reported earnings were at a six-year high. This is the most active or one o fthe most active in pre-market trading. Shares are up 5% at $12.70 on over 4.3 million shares.

LM Ericsson Telephone Co. (NASDAQ: ERIC) is trading down 6% at $11.40 on over 300,000 shares pre-market after earnings missed estimates.

QLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QLGC) is getting slapped after its profit report beat estimates but there were issues on the revenue side. Shares are down 11% at $16.77, but the trading volume so far is very thin.

Quicksilver Resources Inc. (NYSE: KWK) is one of the top gainers this morning after it announced a $1 billion sale of 100% of its interests in Quicksilver Gas Services. The market cap here was only $2.17 billion. Shares are up almost 17% at $14.90 on about 230,000 shares.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) is down but off lows after the earnings significant beat patterns may be peaking. The big news is the CEO departure. Shares are down 5.2% at $40.89 on almost 200,000 shares.

Italian energy giant Eni SpA (NYSE:E) has acquired a 27.5% interest in the leases of Quicksilver Resources Inc. (NYSE:KWK) in Quicksilver’s Alliance properties in the Fort Worth basin. Quicksilver will receive $280 million in cash from the transaction, which the company will be used to pay down debt.

At the end of the first quarter of 2009, Quicksilver had more than $2.6 billion in long-term debt, and had written down more than $590 million in asset values due to the poor economy. Even with that debt burden and the write-down and the establishment of a new 52-week low in March, Quicksilver shares are up more than 50% since the beginning of the year. By comparison, United States Natural Gas ETF (NYSE:UNG) is down for 2009 by about 30%.

So far this morning in the pre-market, Quicksilver is up about 4.5%, to $8.56. The stock’s 52-week range is $3.74-$43.44. Eni’s ADRs are also up in the pre-market, by about 1.5%.

If you thought oil prices of today are high with oil prices north of $105/barrel, imagine what a $120/barrel, or $150/barrel, or even $200/barrel oil would do.

A firm called United Energy now has a $120 target near-term for oil, and recently and at the end of February we saw Deutsche Bank ponder the thought of a $150/barrel price for oil. Now we have Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) joining the fray with a call that at least ponders (not predicting) prices far north of its last $135 super-spike call that had been raised from $100/barrel. Goldman Sachs isn’t really predicting $200 oil, but they are discussing the possibility of such. One thing it has done is raised the lower-end floor of its 2008 to 2012 band to $60.00 per barrel. It even noted that average selling prices were going to remain high:

Average $95/barrel in 2008,

Average $105/barrel in 2009,

and Average $110/barrel in 2010.

Keep in mind this call was very much of a hedged call today that is more of a possibility and conceptual call, so don’t go out thinking that this was a do or die prediction. Goldman Sachs did issue some favorite stocks in the oil patch as well, and it is keeping its predictions high for the sector and the commodities in there as well. This would allow for more of these to oils to hike their dividends. but we would note that less than a month ago we saw Goldman Sachs cut its coal targets.

It added Ultra Petroleum (NYSE: UPL) and Encore Acquisition (NYSE: EAC) to its America’s Buy List, but it simultaneously removed Forest Oil (NYSE: FST) and Quicksilver Resources (NYSE: KWK) from the list with neutral ratings. Most refiner estimates were lowered as a result and is neutral on integrated oils in hopes of a pullback. It still has an attractive coverage view for these. El Paso (NYSE: EP) was also raised to Buy in the coverage today to the Americas Buy List.

With oil north of $105 today, T. Boone Pickens is feeling major pain IF he is still short like he recently noted. He’s been right the whole way up calling for $80 before he’s 80 and then calling for $100 in different calls in 2007. Pleas keep in mind that Goldman Sachs has been making more positive calls in the group since mid to late-February so considering all of these as fresh calls is not really the case. But a mere notion of $200/barrel is something that has many traders talking, and traders are using technical patterns and fear more and more right now.

Traders have been using oil and gold to hide out in to avoid the weakness in the U.S. Dollar. If we see prices go that high, the United States will have to change the name of the currency to the US Peso. We’ve already seen how OPEC is blaming the U.S. for current prices. This would do wonders for Jim Cramer’s latest natural gas pick.

True die hard contrarians would be clamoring for this as an opportunity to sell, but being vocal about that right now would be no different than painting targets on their bodies head to toe. In fact, finding any that are calling for the party to be over in oil is rather difficult.

Goldman Sachs this morning made some significant "Super-Spike" era calls where it said oil could reach $135 per barrel and noted up to $4.50 per gallon of gasoline at the pump for you and me, although its actual base targets are not at that level. It has hiked integrated oil earnings estimates and maintaining "Attractive Ratings" on the sector to include exploration and production. 2008 and 2009 estimates have been raised for oil services and deepwater drillers, and made the following price base price assumptions for oil per barrel and natural gas ($/MMBtu):

2008 $80.00/$8.50

2009 $90.00/$10.00

2010 $80.00/$8.50

2011 $75.00/$7.50

Oil Services estimates raised 6% in 2008 and 16% 2009. Estimates unchanged for offshore drillers due to high contract coverage in deepwater markets and increasing uncontracted supply in the shallow water market. Increased price targets by 7% on average for oil service stocks and by 5% on average for deepwater levered drillers.

Even after Apache Corp. (NYSE:APA) was raised to Buy last week, Goldman Sachs is adding it to the CONVICTION BUY LIST, replaces Forest Oil Corp. (NYSE:FST) on the list.

Quicksilver Resources (NYSE:KWK) continued as Buy/Attractive as performed well since announcing asset sales last week.

QuickSilver Gas Services L.P. (KGS) started as Buy with a $27 target over 12 months.

Other estimates increased (partial list): El Paso (EP), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Frontier Oil (FTO), Hess (HES), Marathon Oil (MRO), Murphy Oil (MUR), Newfield Exploration (NFX), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Petro-Canada (PCZ), Suncor Energy (SU), Sunoco (SUN), Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ), Chevron (CVX), Apache (APA).
