Markets opened slightly lower in the US this morning, but picked up steam in the morning and continued to rise, if slowly, for the rest of the day. The tech sector showed the most strength, with semiconductor stocks rising sharply and pushing the NASDAQ Composite index up more than 1.4% about half an hour before the closing bell. Financial stocks also did well today, and the euro rose back above $1.28 following a report that the IMF wants to increase its lending capacity to around $885 billion. Crude is mixed today, with WTI up fractionally at $100.78/barrel and Brent down -0.65% at $110.81/barrel. Gold rose as well today to $1,658.90.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly 97 points to 12,578.95 (0.78%), the NASDAQ rose nearly 42 points (1.53%) to 2,769.71, and the S&P 500 rose 1.11% or more than 14 points to 1,308.04.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) cut to ‘hold’ at Brean Murray; Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) cut to ‘market perform’ at Wells Fargo; The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) cut to ‘market perform’ at BMO Capital; Cheniere Energy Inc. (AMEX: LNG) started as ‘outperform’ with a $13.50 target price at Credit Suisse; and Carnival Corp. (NYSE: CCL) maintained as ‘hold’ but estimates cut at Argus.

Earnings reports since markets closed yesterday have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Cree Inc. (NASDAQ: CREE) is up 4.3% at $24.33; The Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE: SCHW) is down -1.3% at $12.00; Fastenal Co. (NASDAQ: FAST) is down -2.8% at $45.48; Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) is up 7.5% at $105.03; and State Street Corp. (NYSE: STT) is down -7% at $39.72.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Euro Tech Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: CLWT) is up nearly 53% at $3.91. The Hong Kong-based company has announced an 11-for-2 reverse stock split.

Net 1 UEPS Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: UEPS) is up more than 33% at $8.96. The South African software maker has announced a 5-year deal with the government’s social security agency.

Majesco Entertainment Co. (NASDAQ: COOL) is down more than -27% at $2.17. The video game maker forecast higher sales and marketing costs in 2012.

Ku6 Media Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: KUTV) is down nearly -18% at $2.71. The Chinese online video company rose more than 150% yesterday on the announcement of deal with Google. Today’s fall is likely due to profit-taking.

We also noted 10 stocks that posted new all-time highs today. These include Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD), and Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE). See our coverage here.

Natural gas prices in the US rose to more than $4.80/thousand cubic feet (tcf) in June, and have trailed off to under $3.20/tcf today. In late 2005, natural gas spot prices topped $15/tcf and in the summer of 2008, spot prices rose above $13/tcf. The collapse is entirely due to the development of shale gas.

Big users of natural gas, like chemical companies Dow Chemical Co. (NYSE: DOW) and E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. (NYSE: DD), want the price of natural gas to stay low. Producers like Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) and Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) would like to see prices rise. And there’s at least one company that would like to help the producers boost prices — Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG).

Cheniere’s original plan was to build an import facility in the Gulf of Mexico to convert liquefied natural gas (LNG) back to a gas and pipe it onshore for sale. The boom in shale gas production killed that idea, but the company’s plant at Sabine Pass is built and now the company wants to convert the plant to an export facility that would liquefy US-produced natural gas, load the LNG onto tanker ships, and send it to Japan or India or Korea where prices are nearer $13/tcf than $3/tcf.

The Wall Street Journal has a story today about resistance to Cheniere’s export plan because it would almost certainly raise domestic natural gas prices. Unlike oil, natural gas is primarily a regional product and its sale depends on pipelines connecting regional producers with regional customers. The development of liquefied gas plants has not yet had much impact on regional pricing, but if the US continues to find and develop shale gas reserves, producers will need to find additional markets.

Big consumers of domestic natural gas want the prices to remain low, and are gearing up for a campaign against US liquefaction facilities. The battle lines are being drawn over jobs, with Dow, for example, arguing that higher natural gas prices will lead to a loss of US manufacturing jobs. The energy companies argue that export facilities will create construction and production jobs.

The US Department of Energy is studying the issue and is expected to release a report in the next few weeks analyzing the effect of exports on domestic supplies and pricing. Depending on the conclusions of that report, one side will claim government interference in the market and the other will claim vindication. Stay tuned.

Cedar Fair L.P. (NYSE: FUN) hit a year high of $22.78 today and shares are up1.4% at $23.40. Jim Cramer touted this one on Monday evening as having no real Europe and international exposure.

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPPI) is up 2.5% again at $13.17 and shares hit a new high of $13.22 on continued interest after yesterday’s news that the FDA simplified the approval for Zevalin.

At a meeting of EU leaders, the group approved a 9% capital buffer to go into effect by June 2012. That’s a start, but hardly the end of the long-running disagreement on how the continent should deal with its banking problems. Stocks got a boost from solid earnings from Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) and Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW). Oil prices have dropped more than $2.50/barrel following the weekly EIA report that US crude inventories increased by 4.7 million barrels. New home sales were also up for the first time in five months, following price cuts averaging 3.1%.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly more than 162 points to 11,869.04 (1.39%), the NASDAQ rose more than 12 points (0.46%) to 2.650.67, and the S&P 500 rose 1.05% or nearly 13 points to 1,241.97.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including target price and estimate cuts on Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) at BofA/ML, but the firm maintained its ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBY) was maintained at ‘buy’ with a raised target price of $70 at Argus; First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) was cut to ‘hold’ at both Kaufman and Jefferies, and cut to ‘sell’ at S&P Capital IQ; 3M Co. (NYSE: MMM) was lowered to ‘market perform’ at William Blair; and The New York Times Co. (NYSE: NYT) was cut to ‘neutral’ by Citigroup.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Boeing is up more than 5% at $66.91; Corning is up 3.6% at $14.22; American Electric Power Co. Inc. (NYSE: AEP) is up 0.67%, at $38.91; ConocoPhillips Corp. (NYSE: COP) is up nearly 2%, at $72.03; Exelon Corp. (NYSE: EXC) is up 1%, at $42.75; and Complete Production Services, Inc.
Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG) is up about 70%, to $10.41. The company signed a 20-year agreement with BG Group plc to sell the British company 3.5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually. The deal is worth about $8 billion, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2015.

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: HGSI) is down about -21%, at $10.05, after posting anew 52-week low of $9.68 earlier in the day. The company reported weak earnings today, and its lupus drug failed to meet already low sales expectations.

DeVry Inc. (NYSE: DV) is down-17%, at $38.36. The company’s earnings failed to meet analysts’ estimates and enrollment also declined in its undergraduate degree programs.

Radioshack Corp. (NYSE: RSH) is down nearly -12%, at $11.80. The company missed earnings expectations as it transitions from being a T-Mobile reseller to a Verizon Wireless reseller.

Day rates for shippers of container, crude oil, and dry bulk cargoes have been hit hard this year as an over-supply of vessels and general concerns about the weak global economies have lowered demand for ships. One area where day rates are rising, however, is in transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG). And that’s mainly down to Japan, where the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant had raised demand for an alternative source of energy for generating electricity.

Unlike the over-supply in other shipping markets, LNG vessels are in short supply and carriers like Teekay LNG Partners LP (NYSE: TGP) and Golar LNG Ltd. (NASDAQ: GLNG) are reaping the rewards. The global fleet for LNG carriers totals just 364 vessels. Day rates have risen above $100,000 and Golar is thought to be concluding a deal at $120,000. By 2013, the day rate could be as high $140,000.

These are the highest day rates since 2006, and are due to the fact that 90% of the LNG fleet is contracted on long-term deals that leave only a relative handful of vessels available for spot shipments. LNG cargoes headed for Europe have been redirected to Asia, where LNG prices are higher, increasing the amount of time the LNG carriers are hauling a single cargo.

Much of the LNG is coming from Qatar and is going to Japan. Before the earthquake and tsunami this past Spring, Japan consumed about 70 million tons of LNG annually. That number is expected to rise to 85 million tons in 2011 and 90 million tons in 2012. Qatar’s exports are soon expected to reach 120 million metric tons annually.

Until the recent US boom in shale gas extraction, the US was expected to be an importer of LNG and several receiving terminals had been proposed. Now, Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG) and its subsidiary Cheniere Energy Partners LP (AMEX: CQP) have been approved to build a liquefaction facility at the Sabine Pass LNG receiving terminal, but that project is still a few years away. A proposed receiving terminal in Oregon has also begun the process of getting federal approval to export LNG.

The Kitimat LNG facility in British Columbia is another proposed LNG export terminal owned by Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA) with 40% and Encana Corp. (NYSE: ECA) and the Canadian arm of EOG Resources Inc. (NYSE: EOG), each with 30%. The feedstock will come from Apache and EOG fields in Canada. Initial annual capacity of five million metric tons is due in 2013.

The LNG carrier market could be constrained into 2013. New orders for LNG vessels totaled just 5 in 2010, compared with 45 so far this year. Vessels ordered this year are expected to be delivered in 2014-2015, but all may not be built.

The other impact on LNG carriers could come from new Pacific Rim facilities that will be closer to the Asian markets and lower demand for the long-haul trips from Europe and Africa.

For now, though, the outlook is strong for LNG carriers. Teekay has been only a bit better than flat for the past 12 months, but Golar shares are up more than 150%, though about 20% off of 52-week highs.

When you have a credit rating downgrade of the U.S. followed by a 300+ point drop in the DJIA and another near-100 point drop in the NASDAQ, it is no shock at all that you are seeing some big losers. We have looked through the biggest market losers out there and given why the moves are so exaggerated today. On the flip-side, there are at least seven defensive stocks which should hold up much better from earlier this morning. What is funny about many of the names that are off the most today is that they are down due to credit fallout rather than due to the exact news on their own issues.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) was up the most of all networking stocks this year, so it can’t be too shocking to see it whacked yet again. Shares are down over 12% at $3.11.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) is no surprise and the news is AIG and the bank’s risks to future suits etc… Shares are down 9.3% at $7.42.

Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG) is one of the still very speculative players and the precipitous drop in nat-gas is not helping a leveraged player today. Shares are down a whopping 18% at $6.40.

Crude Carriers Corp. (NYSE: CRU) is following is big leg down from Friday and shares are down 15% at $7.01.

DR Horton Inc. (NYSE: DHI) is down 5.1% at $9.87 and the 52-week low is $9.73. When credit gets tighter, how great is it for homebuilders in an already-weak market? Ditto for all of its peers.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) is down for the risk to U.S. auto sales as the buyers who rely upon credit can easily put off car buying. Ford is down 6.5% at $10.13… risk of double-digits again? That was a 52-week low today. General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is now down 5.5% at $24.86 and shares came within two cents of the post-IPO lows of $24.49 already today.

Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (NYSE: FSL) may be highly diversified, but that is not helping. It was not exactly on the most solid footing when the IPO came about and shares are down another 9.5% at $10.73 after having hit a new 52-week low of $9.57.

Geron Corporation (NASDAQ: GERN) has no news as the leader in stem cell research, but StemCells Inc. (NASDAQ: STEM) is down almost 17% at $2.16. Geron shares are down 9.5% at $2.68 today.

Imperial Sugar Co. (NASDAQ: IPSU) lost over half its value on Friday after management just lost all credibility with its discussion about a loss. The company had just been out pitching its new “alternative sweetener model” rather than just sugar but the damage is extreme now. Shares are down another 14% at $8.09.

Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) is suffering with the international growth scene now. How many people need satellite phones if the purses get tightened too much? Shares are down almost 7% at $7.38.

Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN) is probably seeing a few less up-sales this week and shares are trading down 5.5% at $41.87 on the day. That is still well above $the $28.44 low of the last year.

Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) is getting unusually punished due to the risks to auto sales being the first economic spot hit. Who cares if Howard Stern is there or not on a day like today? Shares are down 7% at $1.68.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) is down yet again and down another 7.8% at $3.43 in active trading. We said the worst was not over there just last week and stick by that statement. It will take a bull market to save Sprint.

VirnetX Holding Corporation (AMEX: VHC) is the patent player that sues companies for royalties. How relevant it is when its “patent partners” are getting whacked so hard is up to. The market vote is that the model is not relevant as shares are down 15% at $18.71 this morning. Keep in mind that the 52-week range is $5.65 to $41.77. Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS) is another “patent licensing operation” that is suffering, with shares down 8% at $10.64 and the stock hit a 52-week high of $10.15 today.

Another day of selling as the great flush continues… The good news is only that the bad news is bad enough and it has been bad enough that at some point you have to expect bargain buyers to surface.

If you believe that an energy policy in the United States can happen in the coming years, there is almost no way that natural gas can be ignored. The massive shale plays, the nat-gas acquisitions by oil companies, the move by T. Boone Pickens and others to convert truck fleets to compressed LNG, and the needs of trading partner nations all point to natural gas being a key factor in the years ahead. Yet today’s natural gas inventory data and a weakening economy and stock market have all actually taken natural gas back under $4.00/tcf for the first time since early in April.

This poses a severe financial risk for many companies who are dependent upon the future of natural gas. We are tracking United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG), Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM), Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK), Encana Corp. (NYSE: ECA), Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE: DVN), EOG Resources Inc. (NYSE: EOG), and Questar Corp. (NYSE: STR). Also being tracked are Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG), Cheniere Energy Partners LP. (AMEX: CQP), Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE) and Westport Innovations Inc. (NASDAQ: WPRT). The losses are brutal, and the weak stock market is not helping things.

United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) has to be one of the worst exchange-traded products out there because of erosion into roll-dates in the futures contracts. Still, it is actively traded because investors can easily get exposure to natural gas on an intraday basis this way in their normal equity accounts. This trust is down 3.6% at $9.97 and a new 52-week low of $9.94 was just hit this morning.

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) includes XTO after its huge natural gas acquisition. Shares are down 1.3% at $76.71 and the 52-week range is $55.94 to $88.23. Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) is the largest pure-play for natural gas and it recently even started a venture fund to drive nat-gas interests as part of the next energy policy. Chesapeake is down a sharp 5.3% at $32.42 and the 52-week range is $19.68 to $35.95.

Encana Corp. (NYSE: ECA) is down 2.9% at $27.40 and close to 52-week lows as that range is $26.02 to $35.25. Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE: DVN) is down 4.3% at $72.55 but its 52-week range is $59.07 to $93.56. EOG Resources Inc. (NYSE: EOG) is down 4.1% at $93.96 versus a 52-week range of $85.42 to $121.44. Questar Corp. (NYSE: STR) is down only 1.7% at $17.95 and its 52-week range is $16.03 to $19.06.

Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG), a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal operation, is down almost 9% at $8.89 versus a 52-week range of $2.30 to $12.81. Its limited partnership is called Cheniere Energy Partners LP. (AMEX: CQP) and that is down ‘only 3.3%’ at $16.55 versus a 52-week range of $15.05 to $24.54.

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE) is T. Boone Pickens’ ‘gas station’ play that he wants to serve the nat-gas trucks as the refuel-stop on major trucking routes. Shares are down more than 4% at $14.58 versus a 52-week range of $11.75 to $17.85.

Westport Innovations Inc. (NASDAQ: WPRT) is down 4.5% at $22.74 versus a 52-week range of $14.25 to $28.05. The company specializes in alternative energy engines for trucks, particular those using compressed natural gas.

Dow Jones was calling for a build of 36 billion cubic feet, but the weekly gain reported by the Energy Information Administration was 44 billion cubic feet and U.S. inventories now sit at 2.758 trillion cubic feet. What is interesting is that Dow Jones noted that this inventory build is still 2.4% under a 5-year average and more than 6% under year-ago levels.

Right now it feels like trying to find the bottom in selling levels is a bit like catching a falling knife. It is just not very rewarding. Maybe a bottom is close and maybe not in these stocks, but one thing is a sure bet: Natural gas dipping back under $4.00/tcf does pose a severe financial risk to the business viability of producing and even transporting natural gas.

Natural gas is not alone in its misery today. Oil is back under $91.00 per barrel as well.

Each weekend we review the issues of the week before and look to the calendar ahead to see which issues are going to stand out with news or events. We have identified many such companies with non-earnings news for the week ahead. This weekend we have some great expectations on moves and issues continuing in shares of Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), Bio-Reference Laboratories Inc. (NASDAQ: BRLI), Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: CTICD), Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG), Express Scripts Inc. (NASDAQ: ESRX), Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM), Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE: ABX), Goldcorp, Inc. (NYSE: GG), iShares MSCI Italy Index (NYSE: EWI), LinkedIn Corporation (NASDAQ: LNKD), Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU), Molycorp Inc. (NYSE: MCP), Portugal Telecom SGPS SA (NYSE: PT), Ryanair Holdings plc (NASDAQ: RYAAY), STEC, Inc. (NASDAQ: STEC), and Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO).

Each of these either had big news that will carry into next week or they are expected to have events on deck this week. We have also given color and some expectations on each, if applicable. A full earnings calendar is available here with detailed previews for the sector-moving key stocks set to release earnings. You can also review Friday’s top analyst upgrades and downgrades, as well as see our own Top 7 Analyst Calls of the Week to see the research notes that offer significant insight into equity issues.

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS) had a great Friday after getting a $1 billion or so buyout offer from Liberty Media. Shares rose 29.9% to $18.33, above the $17 offer from John Malone. Tuesday is when its eReader is supposed to launch. With shares above the buyout offer price, investors will be hopping for more. B&N’s 52-week trading range is $8.45 to $20.45 and this was a $40+ stock within the last five years.

Bio-Reference Laboratories Inc. (NASDAQ: BRLI) was given a very cautious article in Barron’s over the weekend called “There Will Be Blood.” Barron’s cites the clinical-testing company as having spent much of its early history with rogue bankers and brokers and questions whether or not it can overcome its past. It also questions its earnings quality and new products.

Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) hosts its annual investor meeting on Tuesday (May 24) and it would seem as though shareholders would have plenty to be angry about with all of the delays and problems it has had. Still, with shares only down 4% from the 52-week high it may be hard for those holders to have too much bad to say.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: CTICD) rose by 23.8% to $2.08 on Friday after announcing that it will meet with the FDA’s Office of Oncology Drug Products in early June to discuss the re-submission of its new drug application for pixantrone’s accelerated approval as a treatment for patients with relapsed or refractory aggressive non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Shares were up another 26% at $2.63 in the after-hours with almost an additional 200,000 shares traded after the closing bell.

Cheniere Energy, Inc. (AMEX: LNG) is going to remain in focus this coming week and shares should have some volatility a bit higher since the stock rallied over 30% on news that it was approved to begin LNG exports from its terminal. Shares were up 30.5% at $10.04 on Friday, and it traded over 13 million shares.

Express Scripts Inc. (NASDAQ: ESRX) was given a very positive article in Barron’s called “A Prescription For Success” as the PBM is poised to capitalize on a coming surge in demand for generic drugs bringing a strong second-half of 2011. Be advised, at $59.98 its 52-week range is $41.55 to $60.79 and its Thomson Reuters estimates of $3.20 and $3.93 give it forward earnings multiples of 18.7-times 2011 earnings and about 15.25-times 2012 earnings.

Gold miners in them that hills… Barron’s wrote a piece called “For Gold Miners, Big Nuggets of Hope” and it talked up shares of Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM), Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE: ABX), and Goldcorp, Inc. (NYSE: GG). These are different picks than Tom Winmill gave us from the Midas Fund in our exclusive interview on Friday, but the thesis is much the same.
