Warren Buffett may be the only newspaper owner in American who wants to support the business. In addition to his ownership of daily newspapers in Omaha and Buffalo, he recently bought a portfolio of Media General (NYSE: MEG) newspapers. But the rest of the industry is in a retreat unlike any since the depth of the recession. It is a sign that the line newspaper companies hoped to hold as they cuts costs and moved to the Internet has buckled.

The Times-Picayune of New Orleans is owned by Advance Publications, which in turn is owned by the uber-rich Newhouse family. Advance announced it would cut back printing and delivery of the paper to three days a week — Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Advance also will gut three other papers — the Birmingham News, the Press-Register of Mobile and the Huntsville Times. Advance has practice in “downsizing” papers. It made a similar move in 2009 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The daily was cut in favor of AnnArbor.com.

The next move by the Newhouse family likely will be to take similar steps with three other big city dailies it owns — the Plain Dealer of Cleveland, the Star-Ledger of Newark and the Oregonian. In a little more than one wave of a hand, four large cities will be without dailies.

The notion that Internet versions of papers can tip the industry back toward success is a flawed. An examination of the financial results of the Washington Post Company (NYSE: WPO), the New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT), Gannett (NYSE: GCI) and deeply troubled McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) shows that online revenue remains a tiny part of overall sales. The New York Times newspaper operation announced a drop in digital sales of 2.3% last quarter. Digital advertising is now 22.5% of the group’s revenue. That is not nearly enough to stanch the sharp erosion of print ad revenue that has dropped sharply for a decade. And it is worth noting that the New York Times sites have by far the largest audience of any newspaper group in the country.

The impression that analysts who follow the industry have for now is that the biggest newspaper chains will not cut back the number of days they print their largest daily papers. Newspapers that are more than 100 years old can be maintained by plans to lower circulations and charge loyal customers more for their subscriptions. That is only a delaying tactic. Nothing can entirely offset disappearing print advertising.

It is inevitable that large dailies in more and more cities will cut the number of days that they print newspapers, except in metropolitan areas where Warren Buffett owns the properties.

It is no secret that the newspaper business has not been a good sector over the last decade. Subscriptions declined about as fast as the number of smokers did in the 1990s. The business model of distributing newspapers has been gutted as job search car sales, selling homes, and most other key advertising areas has moved to the internet. So why is Warren Buffett spending millions of dollars to buy a bunch of regional newspapers?

News came on Thursday morning that Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-B) (NYSE: BRK-A) has reached a deal with Media General, Inc. (NYSE: MEG) to buy all of Media General’s newspapers outside of the Tampa paper. Buffett is joining a sector that has wrecked many private equity firms looking for deals over the last decade in printed news. The price tag is listed as $142 million in cash, but Berkshire Hathaway will simultaneously issue a $400 million term loan and a $45 million revolving credit line.

Today’s news is likely to bring a focus on other newspaper outfits around the nation. Some companies with high concentrations in newspapers are Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI), The McClatchy Company (NYSE: MNI), Daily Journal Corp. (NASDAQ: DJCO), A. H. Belo Corporation (NYSE: BLC), Lee Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: LEE).

Berkshire Hathaway also owns 1.7 million shares of The Washington Post Company (NYSE: WPO), although Warren Buffett does not hold a board seat any longer. Does it beg the question, “Does this increase or decrease the value of The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT)?”…

Media General will also issue Berkshire Hathaway ‘penny warrants’ for approximately 4.6 million Class A shares and that will give Buffett the right to buy 19.9% of Media General’s existing shares outstanding. Berkshire Hathaway also has the option to nominate a director to Media General’s board of directors.

The newspaper sale includes websites and mobile applications and these outfits have commercial printing businesses as well. These include 63 daily and weekly titles in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama.

Dare we say Buffett is back to his paper route he had as a teenager? Mr. Buffett said, “In towns and cities where there is a strong sense of community, there is no more important institution than the local paper. The many locales served by the newspapers we are acquiring fall firmly in this mold and we are delighted they have found a permanent home with Berkshire Hathaway.”

The move will allow Media General to focus on the broadcast television business, which accounted for some 77% of its 2011 platform cash flow in 2011.

Media General closed at $3.14 on Wednesday and its 52-week range is $1.14 to $6.84. Its shares are indicated up about 40% around $4.75 in early indications. With this newspaper and media outfit up so much, it may be safe to expect that other newspaper outfits could be worth more money than their battered shares indicate.

The Associated Press hired the worst CEO in the newspaper industry as its 13th chief executive. Its board of directors should be ashamed, as should anyone who works at the news company. Gary Pruitt, the head of McClatchy (NYSE: MNI), will move to the AP after destroying the newspaper chain he has run. He will move on with his former firm still in tatters.

Pruitt became the CEO of McClatchy in 1996. The chain took on about $2 billion in debt, a great deal of it to buy rival Knight Ridder for $4.6 billion in 2006. In 2009, it teetered close to bankruptcy. A restructuring of obligations saved it, for a while at least. McClatchy is in financial trouble again. Pruitt leaves for the AP just in time to avoid leading McClatchy as it heads toward a new crisis.

McClatchy suffered the fate of many other chains. Its revenue, adjusted for the KR deal and the sale of one of its large papers, was almost $2.6 billion in 2007. Last year, the figure fell to just over $1.3 billion. The company had a tiny profit of $54 million in 2011. But the interest expense on its long-term debt load was $139 million. McClatchy’s long-term debt is still nearly $1.6 billion. Among the firm’s risk factors, according to its 10-K, is this: “This level of debt increases the Company’s vulnerability to general adverse economic and industry conditions.”

All newspaper stocks have fallen over the past five years as the industry has struggled with costs and a decline in print advertising. That drop has not been offset by a rise in digital revenue. But the market has been more disappointed with management at McClatchy than at other large chains. Its shares are down much more sharply than those of The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) or Gannett (NYSE: GCI). Pruitt’s poor decisions have badly hurt shareholders.

The biggest surprise about Pruitt’s appointment is that the AP board should be more aware of his shortcomings than anyone else. The board includes Michael Golden of the New York Times, Katharine Weymouth of the Washington Post (NYSE: WPO) and Craig A. Dubow of Gannett.

Pruitt has decided to leave his company, and its shareholders, at a time when they are in great peril, again. After his AP appointment, Pruitt said, “The Associated Press is the most important news organization in the world and an essential force in democracy.’ That it true.

US equity markets opened lower this morning, but after the first hour or so of trading, the three major indexes moved to positive territory where they remained for the rest of the day. There was talk that a deal was forthcoming on the Greek debt swap deal, but that did not materialize. Maybe tomorrow? Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke didn’t have anything new to say to the US Senate committee this morning, and today’s earnings reports didn’t impress traders much either. A late day report on a big jump in December levels of consumer credit has given the market a small jolt in the last hour of trading. Crude oil is up today, with WTI crude up sharply by 1.82% at $98.67/barrel and Brent crude up 0.23% at $116.20/barrel. Gold closed up 1.4% at $1,748.40/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 33 points to 12,878.43 (0.26%), the NASDAQ rose more than 2 points (0.07%) to 2,904.08, and the S&P 500 rose 0.20% or nearly 3 points to 1,347.05.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) started as ‘underweight’ at Barclays; IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) started as ‘buy’ with a $230 target price at Sterne Agee (our coverage here); AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) cut to ‘underperform’ at BofA/ML; Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) cut to ‘sell’ at Brean Murray; and Zoltek Cos. Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOLT) cut to ‘underperform’ at Needham (our coverage here).

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM) is up 2.67% at $64.88 after posting a new 52-week high of $65.79 earlier today; ArcelorMittal AS (NYSE: MT) is up 3.5% at $22.19; BP plc (NYSE: BP) is down -0.41% at $46.68; Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) is up 1% at $68.71 (our coverage here); Emerson Electric Co. (NYSE: EMR) is down -2.6% at $51.99; and Louisiana-Pacific Corp. (NYSE: LPX) is down -6.5% at $8.31 (our coverage here).

Our preview of tomorrow’s earnings releases is here.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

The McClatchy Co. (NYSE: MNI) is up 21% at $2.71. The newspaper company reported stronger-than-expected earnings today on cost-cutting.

Coinstar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSTR) is up 16.5% at $58.90 after posting a new 52-week high of $60.81 earlier today. The video rental company will join with Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) to offer a streaming video service to compete with Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and others.
Standard Pacific Corp. (NYSE: SPF) is up 15.8% at $4.69 after posting a new 52-week high of $4.85 earlier today. The homebuilder posted good earnings today and reported that orders are up 8% in January.

Nevsun Resources Ltd. (AMEX: NSU) is down more than -30% at $4.43. The junior gold miner issued a preliminary 2012 outlook that included a sharp drop in production and in its reserves estimates.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: BPAX) is down more than -18% at $0.86. The company is the target of a new lawsuit charging it with misrepresentation. We have more coverage of BioSante here.

Shares in companies such as the New York Times (NYSE: NYT), Gannett (NYSE: GCI) and McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) moved up sharply early on. But those stocks are down between 10% and 50% for 2011. The balloon of hope that digital revenue and lower costs would rescue the industry has popped. Digital sales have not nearly matched the attrition in print revenue. Some newspaper companies have had difficulties driving digital revenue up compared to numbers from 2010.

The theory behind the aggressive purchase of newspaper stocks actually fails into three areas. The first is that large companies like the New York Times would make share market gains in the revenue from online ads and digital subscriptions — the so-called pay wall. The next is that newspapers could shrink their print subscription bases and retreat to geographic areas in which only subscribers who would pay premiums reside. The third, and most radical, is that some papers could discontinue seven-day-a-week delivery schedules. These papers could keep print subscribers if they only printed and delivered papers three or four days a week. Readers would go online to get news on the other days.

The weakness behind these notions has to do with the way people get news now. There are enough news sites, many of them local, that readers have a number of options when they look for news and entertainment content. The other expectation of publishers is that they could shrink their way to profits. However, print revenue continued to fall more rapidly than costs. Papers have to keep some level of newsroom staff in order to remain viable sources of local news. Presses still have to run. Trucks still have to deliver.

The hope that digital media would save newspapers turned out to be false. If anything, the availability of large amounts of information online undermined the industry as much as anything else.

Futures were soft prior to the opening bell due largely to continue to worry about Europe and a forecast cut to the European Central Bank’s lending rate from 1.25% to 1%. The mid-morning report on US crude oil stocks put a halt to any thought of a crude price rise, with US inventories growing by 1.3 million barrels following a 3.9 million barrel increase the week before. WTI is trading down almost $1, at $100.30/barrel late in the day, and Brent is trading at $109.45/barrel, down more than $1.35. Gold is up nearly 0.75%, at $1,744.60.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 45 points to 12,195.61 (0.37%), the NASDAQ fell less than 1 point (-0.01%) to 2,649.21, and the S&P 500 rose 0.20% or more than 2 points to 1,261.02.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) started as ‘buy’ with a $725 target price at Canaccord Genuity. Other ratings actions today include JDS Uniphase Corp. (NASDAQ: JDSU) started as ‘buy’ with a $14.75 target price at Jefferies; Darden Restaurants Inc. (NYSE: DRI) cut to ‘hold’ from ‘buy’ at Argus; Chubb Corp. (NYSE: CB) started as ‘outperform’ at Credit Suisse; and LinkedIn Corp. (NASDAQ: LNKD) started as ‘buy’ with an $85 target price at Canaccord Genuity.

The NASDAQ stocks which fit this bill are as follows: Cadence Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: CADX); Diamond Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND); Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA); Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc. (NASDAQ: OMEX); Pacer International, Inc. (NASDAQ: PACR); MannKind Corporation (NASDAQ: MNKD); Wave Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: WAVX); Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER); NutriSystem Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI); and Zix Corporation (NASDAQ: ZIXI).

The NYSE stocks which fit this bill, except for one, are as follows: Mindray Medical International (NYSE: MR); Sealy Corporation (NYSE: ZZ); Rogers Communication, Inc. (NYSE: RCI); The McClatchy Company (NYSE: MNI); HHGregg, Inc. (NYSE: HGG); American Greetings Corporation (NYSE: AM); Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (NYSE: BPI); and Life Time Fitness (NYSE: LTM).

We only looked at companies with an average volume of more than 250,000 shares and have added some loose color on these if applicable.

It’s the middle of the year, and by now, most large public companies have reported financial results for the second quarter of 2011. Some of the figures have been terrible — in many cases worse than expected. In the case of a few large companies, the horror of this year is an extension of several years of declines. The CEOs at many of these most troubled companies have been in place for a long time and investors have to question how they keep their jobs. Eventually, performance has to count, even in sectors in which the overall environment is poor.
