The corporate governance exercise of a stock split to increase the number of shares and to lower the share price should theoretically have no impact on how the investment community evaluates a stock. After all, it changes nothing about the price-to-earnings ratio nor the profit margins and it does not generate any additional revenue. Still, the stock split strategy is used over and over by companies and Wall Street has been seeing a resurgence of this bull market strategy under corporate governance.

Investors used to be addicted to stock splits for more than a generation. As share prices rose and rose, companies kept splitting their stock. Some consider this a means of keeping a share price low to keep attracting new investors. Other investors consider a stock split nothing but a gimmick.

Whole Foods Market Inc. (NASDAQ: WFM) was the latest company to join in on the bandwagon. The stock rose by 10% and hit yet another all-time on the news. The reality is that the shares have risen on a solid earnings report and on its ability to maintain much higher gross margin than traditional grocery stores.

Other companies have upcoming stock splits as well. The earnings calendar and stock split calendar show that A.O. Smith (NYSE: AOS) and Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL) will both go ex-split on a 2-1 basis with an ex-split date of May 16. Noble Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NBL) will go ex-split on a 2-1 basis on May 29.

Ask Warren Buffett what he thinks about stock splits. His A-shares of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) have never split and recently put in an all-time stock price high of almost $167,000. Even his more newly created B-shares of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-B) trade at a high price of $110.00.

Many companies do not like to split their stocks. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) might greatly benefit from this as it is more expensive to buy share of common stock than it is to buy an iPhone or an iPad. Still, its shares went to above $700 and the sell-off down to under $400 was never really directly attributed to Tim Cook not splitting the stock.

What about Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG). Its stock just hit a new all-time high of $873.50 on Tuesday and this company’s efforts were being aimed at a split that was actually a division of power more than a traditional stock split investors are used to.

Some investors love stock splits. Others think of them as mere gimmicks. The debate remains alive, but as share prices rise and rise there will likely be more and more stock splits coming down the pipe. We have considered this merely as a poor man’s dividend. When you see stock split after stock split being announced, you generally know you are deep into a bull market.

In March of 2009 after a brutal sell-off had knocked the S&P 500 down almost 60% from its 2007 high, there was still a vocal group of bears saying it was going lower. Among them was noted PIMCO founder Bill Gross. We wrote yesterday that many Wall St. firms are expecting a correction, one that could be as steep as 5%. But what if the market does not sell off? What if it continues, albeit at a more moderate pace, to go higher? In the second part of a recent report, the equity strategists at UBS A.G. (NYSE: UBS) highlight which stocks to buy now if that happens.

To be clear, the team at UBS is not bullish at this point. They point out that since November 15, the S&P 500 has risen 14.6% as a flood of central bank liquidity and falling event (tail) risks. In their view, the market’s “sugar high” is unlikely to be sustained, given relatively weak underlying economic and earnings trends. While stocks have advanced handsomely over the past four months, taking a step back, it appears to the analysts that the “risk on/risk off” trading environment will persist, supporting a cautious market outlook.

That said, they also acknowledge that many portfolio managers still feel the path of least resistance for the market is higher. In the event that does happen, while they are maintaining a cautious outlook, they acknowledge markets could trade higher. For investors who also feel that way, they point out it is important to note that there has been a significant shift in market leadership in the current rally, in comparison to other recent risk-on periods. Companies exhibiting the greatest operating leverage have led during the current rally. However, this is a significant departure from other recent risk-on periods, in which volatility — or simply buying the most beaten up stocks — worked best.

Here is the list of stocks from UBS to buy for a continued upward move in the market:

Broadcasting leader CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) leads off the list. With its ratings dominant comedy, drama and sports programming, the company has Thomson/First Call consensus price target on its shares of $48.

Refiner Tesoro Corp. (NYSE: TSO), like many stocks in the sector, has been a stellar performer, with the refining and retail segments both hitting on all cylinders. The consensus estimate for this Wall St. favorite is $59.69.

Independent exploration and production leader Noble Energy Inc. (NYSE: NBL) also makes the UBS list. The Wall St. consensus price target is $130.

A third energy name on the list, and also a current favorite of many Wall St. portfolio managers, is Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: APC). Based in the Houston suburb of The Woodlands, Anadarko’s three segments of exploration, midstream and marketing have been on fire. The consensus estimate for the shares is $100.

Diagnostic research company PerkinElmer Inc.(NYSE: PKI), with two strong operating segments in human and environmental health, is also well liked on Wall St. The consensus price target is $40.

Air and ground delivery company United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS) is one of many companies expected to grow as the economy improves. The consensus price target for the delivery giant is $91.

Rounding out the list is former 1990s tech high flyer JDS Uniphase Corp. (NASDAQ: JDSU). Almost left for dead after the tech bubble burst, JDS Uniphase makes communications test and measurement equipment in addition to optical products. The consensus target for the stock is $16.50.

Investors should remember the thesis for owning these specific names is that they all have high-end operating leverage relative to their peers. As we pointed out yesterday, even if you are bullish, it may make sense to buy partial positions now and leave some cash handy should the market sell off. The crowd saying a correction is imminent may be wrong, but better safe than sorry after such a big rally.

Here was the first list of eight UBS stock picks to buy.

The survey pool consisted of employees from energy companies, hedge funds, long-only investors and a large “other” category. We frequently cover Wall Street analysts and their research on individual stocks or sectors but this outlook is actually from some people who are actually investing and putting money to work in the energy sector.

To quickly put the survey into perspective, when participants were asked their energy sector weighting 68% said they were overweight while 21% said they were neutral. Only 11% were underweight. When asked their largest weighting within energy, refiners and exploration and production (E&P) companies topped the list tied at 26%. The big picture view that can be taken from it was that the participants were very bullish on oil and energy going forward.

When asked “Of the well liked large capitalization stocks which will outperform?” Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: APC) was the overwhelming choice followed by Noble Energy Inc. (NYSE: NBL), Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (NYSE: PXD), EOG Resources Inc. (NYSE: EOG) and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE: MRO). Marathon was notable in that they received no votes for outperforming.

When asked “Which stock is poised for a breakout in 2013?” the results were very closely bunched. The participants top break out choice was Hess Corporation (NYSE: HES) followed by in order by Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA), Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN), Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) and Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE: MUR).

One other interesting question asked of the participants especially after they cited so many large cap Independent E&P names was “ What is the chance the one of the Integrated Oils like Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM), Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) or even BHP Billiton Ltd (NYSE: BHP) launching a takeover bid for a large cap Independent E&P”. A whopping 42% said there was a 50-75% chance, while 27% thought there was a 75-100% chance. Of course, the question is who is the target?

The survey contained many typical general questions but one theme was consistent. The participants felt that oil and gas pricing would stay firm to slightly higher from current levels. They were also generally in agreement that demand from China, India and the Middle East would drive pricing and profits, while growth production from the US, Russia, OPEC and other countries could weigh on pricing and profits.

We wanted to know how the survey results look against the consensus. We included each stock mentioned herein below, along with the current share price and the one-year forward consensus price target from Thomson Reuters.

(NYSE: CNX) has outlined its investment plans for 2013, and the company expects to spend more on natural gas than it does on coal properties. Net investment for 2013 is forecast at $835 to $865 million, of which the biggest share will be spent on natural gas.

The company’s CEO said:

[O]nce we complete the BMX Mine, we do not expect to be investing in new major coal growth projects. So, in 2014 and beyond, we expect annual coal investments to approach maintenance-of-production levels of $5 to $6 per ton.

The BMX (Bailey Mine Expansion) in southwestern Pennsylvania is expected to be operational by the first quarter of next year following a $660+ million expansion project that will boost production at the Bailey complex to 25 million tons a year.

To reach its spending goal, Consol plans to sell $455 to $640 million in assets, including a $328 million payment from Noble Energy Inc. (NYSE: NBL). The payment is the last in a $1 billion deal between the two firms to create a joint partnership to develop natural gas leases in the Marcellus shale play in southwest Pennsylvania and northwest Virginia.

Consol expects to invest $600 million to develop its Marcellus shale assets in 2013, another $160 million to maintain current natural gas production, and another $122 million in a joint venture with Hess Corp. (NYSE: HES) in the Utica shale play. Investment in natural gas development is expected to total $835 to $935 million.

Net investment in coal operations is forecast at $410 to $520 million, including a $205 million operating lease deal.

The news that a traditional coal company is investing twice as much in natural gas as in coal has pushed down the stocks of most other coal miners. Shares of Peabody Energy Corp. (NYSE: BTU) are down 2.9%, Arch Coal shares are down 2.2%, and Alpha Natural Resources Inc.’s (NYSE: ANR) are down 3.1%, while James River Coal Co. (NASDAQ: JRCC) is down 2.9%, Walter Energy Inc. (NYSE: WLT) is down 2.2%. Cloud Peak Energy Inc. (NYSE: CLD) is up about 1.1% and Consol itself is down 0.8%.

We continue to expect that corporate insiders, venture backers, private equity backers, and founders will sell stock at close to a record pace. After all, the 15% capital gains taxes for the bulk of these insiders is set rise with or without a fiscal cliff settlement. There is a common belief that taxes on asset sales will never be as low as they are right now. Yes, never!

24/7 Wall St. has tracked many of the large transactions which have been seen since Thanksgiving and since the election and some of the dollar sums are amazing. The risk of not selling to lock in gains now is also not just one of taxes: if the fiscal cliff is not resolved these insiders might have to wait through another recession for much higher prices.

These are just some of the insider sales we have seen of late in the $1 million and higher range in total per company since Thanksgiving and into December. Many of these are options exercised and are under planned executive share sales, so they are not solely intended to be signaling any reason for panic.

Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) has seen more than $20 million worth of stock sold by insiders and founders since Thanksgiving. That being said, it is important to remember that this is still a controlled company under the founders.

Carrols Restaurant Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: TAST) has seen key holder Jefferies Capital Partners LLC clean out its position on December 7. The sale was for 4.08 million shares a face value sale of almost $23.7 million.

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation (NASDAQ: CTSH) has seen multiple officers sell since Thanksgiving through December 10. The tally was more than $33.5 million worth of stock via option exercises.

Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) has seen John Conway (Chair, Pres, CEO) sell more than $9 million worth of shares after exercising options in December alone, but he sold almost $20 million after the election prior to the latest selling.

DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) has seen different sales from insiders after options were exercised to the tune of about $15 million worth of stock at face value.

Eaton Vance Corp. (NYSE: EV) has seen various officers sell about $18 million worth of shares from options exercised since Thanksgiving.

Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXPD) has seen more than $3.3 million worth of shares sold after options were exercised by its President of the Americas, CIO, and its VP of Global Customs.

Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN) has seen CEO Min Kao sell off a considerable portion of his shares. He has sold some $70 million or so in stock sales in the month of December alone. Kao has been an aggressive seller since September, but many of these share were after the inclusion announcement for the S&P 500 Index.

Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD) had one incredible year and Chairman and CEO John Martin has sold more than $12 million worth of shares sold after options exercises. Other insiders have sold close to $8 million worth of stock after exercising options since Thanksgiving.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) sees routine insider selling by insiders and founders. That being said, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and others have all been selling even in December after we noted Eric Schmidt and insider selling around Thanksgiving. The total is about $115 million so far in the month of December via share sales.

Kellogg Company (NYSE: K) has seen the Kellogg Foundation Trust sell more than $19 million worth of stock since Thanksgiving, but we would note that the trust still holds more than 75 million shares so this would be considered ongoing as the trust has only sold about 5% or 6% of its holdings in the last year.

Lowe’s Companies, Inc. (NYSE: LOW) has seen some $26 million from Thanksgiving through December 10 via options exercised by many different insiders.

Mastercard Inc. (NYSE: MA) has seen the Mastercard Foundation make 5 different sales for more than $22 million in September, but the group still lists its share count up many times higher in dollar terms because its holdings were listed as over 12.55 million shares.

NCR Corp. (NYSE: NCR) saw Chairman, CEO, and President William Nuti conduct an option exercise worth about $24.3 million and he turned around and sold these for more than $38.4 million on December 7.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXST) has seen ABRY Broadcast Partners (under Royce Yudroff) sell more than $70 million worth of stock in the broadcast company during the first full week of December.

Noble Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NBL) has seen about $5 million worth of shares sold in insider sales transactions since Thanksgiving in options exercise sales by the Senior VP of International Operations, the head of Exploration, and from its President & COO David Stover.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has seen two sales coming to about $1.7 million from the head of communications and from the general counsel in the first half of December.

Oceaneering International, Inc. (NYSE: OII) saw one director make two sales coming to more than $6.4 million worth of stock in December.

PetSmart, Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM) has seen multiple sales of about $3 million since Thanksgiving from officers such as the President/COO, SVP-Finance, and two others from option exercises.

PVH Corp. (NYSE: PVH) has seen various insiders selling, but one really stands out. Director David Landau sold some $233 million worth of stock on December 5.

Ralph Lauren Corporation (NYSE: RL) has seen insider selling pick up from the Lauren Family, LLC, something we would only expect to see more of as the lowest tax rates are set to expire. This has been more than $30 million worth of shares in December alone.

Salesforce.com, Inc. (NYSE: CRM) has seen very large numbers of insider selling. It looks like the floodgates opened up after the middle of November. Without being exact, the sum looks to be about $30 million worth of stock sold.

Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX) has seen founder Howard Schultz sell more than $74 million worth of stock alone so far in the month of December. Other officers have sold as well, but this is the biggest sale seen of the lot.

TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation (NYSE: AMTD) has seen Joe Ricketts sell some $24.3 million worth of stock. Keep in mind that he is still in possession of more than 48 million shares.

UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE: UNH) has seen President & Chief Exec Officer Stephen Hemsley conduct two option exercises worth more than $19.7 million to be turned around and sold for more than $32 million in December. He still holds shares worth more than $150 million.

YUM! Brands, Inc. (NYSE: YUM) has seen Chairman, CEO, and President David Novak exercise options worth $10 million and sold for more than $35.7 million in December alone. Other officers have sold about $6 million worth of stock after exercising options in December alone.

The total of all bids came to $2.6 billion for 2.4 million acres.

The roster of bidders totaled 56 companies, including Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM), ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX), Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA, Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE: RDS-A), Anadarko Petroleum Co. (NYSE: APC), Noble Energy Inc. (NYSE: NBL), BP plc (NYSE: BP), BHP Billiton plc (NYSE: BHP), and Statoil ASA (NYSE: STO).

The largest amount of acreage leased was in water less than 250 feet deep — more than 913,000 acres. Ultradeepwater leases (more than about 5,000 feet deep) were the next biggest seller with nearly 836,000 leased acres sold.

The single highest bid came in at $157 million for a block in the Mississippi Canyon area. The block received four bids and the eventual winner was Statoil’s Mexican subsidiary.

Shell led the big spenders, with a total of $406.6 million, followed by Statoil ($333.3 million), BP ($239.5 million), and Chevron ($189.6 million).

The BOEM estimates that hydrocarbon recovery from the leased areas will yield up to 1.6 billion barrels of oil and up to 6.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The federal royalty rate on production from these sales is 18.75%.

Before leases are awarded the BOEM evaluates the winning bids “to ensure the public receives fair market value before a lease is awarded.”

The press release announcing the results of the sale is available here.

All three major US stock indexes opened lower this morning and the day was mostly a gentle slide for the rest of the trading session. The failed Greek debt deal weighed on futures this morning and nothing came along during the day to lift anyone’s spirits. US consumer sentiment fell slightly in January, the US trade deficit grew, and the federal budget deficit shrank, but now by enough to ignite buyers. Remarks by Fed chairman Bernanke on how to fix the housing mess didn’t offer anything new either. With equities and commodities all lower, the dollar index rose 0.523% today to 79.140. Crude oil is down today, with WTI down -1.04% at $98.80/barrel and Brent down -1.05% at $117.35/barrel. Gold settled down -0.9% at $1,725.30/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 89 points to 12,801.23 (-0.69%), the NASDAQ fell more than 23 points (-0.8%) to 2,903.88, and the S&P 500 fell -0.69% or more than 9 points to 1,342.64.

There were several <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/02/10/top-analyst-upgrades-downgrades-altr-amsc-biib-celg-coh-cstr-cop-fslr-gild-hain-ma-rf-trlg/"title="Top Analyst Upgrades & Downgrades (ALTR, AMSC, BIIB, CELG, COH, CSTR, COP, FSLR, GILD, HAIN, MA, RF, TRLG)" >analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) raised to ‘buy’ at Deutsche Bank; Gilead Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD) started as ‘overweight’ at both Barclays and Morgan Stanley; American Superconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: AMSC) raised to ‘buy’ at Goldman Sachs; Mastercard Inc. (NYSE: MA) reiterated as ‘buy’ and target price raised to $450 at Argus; and Coach Inc. (NYSE: COH) started as ‘buy’ at Citigroup.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: LinkedIn Corp. (NASDAQ: LNKD) is up more than 18% at $90.44 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/02/09/linkedin-2012-outlook-ebitda-vs-eps-lnkd/"title="LinkedIn 2012 Outlook: EBITDA vs. EPS (LNKD)" >here); Activision Blizzard Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI) is down -2.84% at $12.30; Capstone Turbine Corp. (NASDAQ: CPST) is down -9.8% at $1.26; Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRE) is down -3.5% at $11.20; Kona Grill Inc. (NASDAQ: KONA) is down -3.8% at $6.05; True Religion Apparel Inc. (NASDAQ: TRLG) is down more than -27% at $26.75; Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (NYSE: LGF) is up 6.5% at $11.73 after posting a new 52-week high of $12.24 earlier today; Move Inc. (NASDAQ: MOVE) is up 14% at $8.65; Noble Energy Inc. (NYSE: NBL) is down -2.7% at $100.70; Pharmacyclics Inc. (NASDAQ: PCYC) is up more than 14% at $22.65 after posting a new 52-week high of $23.57 earlier today; Alcatel Lucent (NYSE: ALU) is up more than 13% at $2.2 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/02/10/alcatel-lucent-pulls-a-rabbit-out-of-its-hat-on-earnings-alu/"title="Alcatel-Lucent Pulls a Rabbit Out of Its Hat on Earnings (ALU)" >here); FLIR Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: FLIR) is down -3.3% at $24.90; and Ruth’s Hospitality Group Inc. (NASDAQ: RUTH) is up 3.2% at $6.19.

RPX Corp. (NASDAQ: RPXC) is up more than 11% at $19.21. The patent risk management company has a contract with Alcatel Lucent that could be very valuable as the larger company begins more aggressively to license its 29,000 patents.

Amyris Inc. (NASDAQ: AMRS) is down more than -28% at $6.95 after posting a new 52-week low of $6.85 earlier today. The biofuel maker’s stock was downgraded following a negative outlook from the company for 2012.
