Netflix Battleground Status Continues (NFLX, BBI, CSTR)

Netflix LogoNetflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) is a true battleground stock.  It has a loyal customer base, a cult-like stock following, and trades with a very high short interest.  Shares are screaming today and have effectively hit not just 52-week highs… all-time highs. The earnings report showed a 48% profit rise and it raised its annual subscriber and financial metrics.  The company’s profit rose by almost 50% to $30.1 million, or $0.52 EPS.  But on a non-GAAP basis those earnings were $0.55 EPS.  Revenues rose by about 24% from a year ago to $423.1 million. Thomson Reuters consensus data was $0.49 EPS and $419.9 million in revenues.

DVD Sales Crushed By Rentals, As Apple (AAPL) And Amazon (AMZN) Rise

bearDVD sales are flagging and rentals are up, news which is likely to be unwelcome at the major movie studios. The Digital Entertainment Group announced that in the first half of this year, DVD sales fell almost 14% to $5.4 billion. DVD rental  revenue rose 8% to $3.4 billion.

While kiosk operator RedBox and DVD mailer NetFlix (NFLX) are a large part of the rise in rentals, it is Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) that are really crushing the studio DVD sales. Read More »

NetFlix (NFLX) Flanks Its Competition Again

Water liliesNetFlix (NFLX) is making another move to keep it ahead of rivals including Amazon (AMZN) and Blockbusters. It will adding its video-on-demand service to the Microsoft (MSFT) Window Media software. According to CNET, “For Netflix, the partnership offers the Web’s No.1 video rental service the chance to reach scores of of Vista users.”

Although Vista sales have been disappointing for Microsoft, it is still the most-used PC operating system after Windows XP. NetFlix will now have the opportunity to market its video streaming services to millions of potential customers. Read More »
