Buffett & Berkshire Hathaway Q3-2009 Holdings (BRK-A, BRK-B, GCI, GE, GSK, HD, IR, IRM, JNJ, KFT, LOW, MCO, NLC, NKE, NSC, NRG)

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A)(BRK-B) has its Q3-2009 public equity holdings as of September 30, 2009.  In our group “A to F” we noted some interim changes in the lot.  Here are Warren Buffett’s holdings and accompanying notes for the group ‘G to O.’

  • Gannett Co. (NYSE: GCI) 3.447 million shares, same as before.
  • General Electric Corp. (NYSE: GE) 7.777 million shares is the same as before, but does not include the huge preferred investment from late 2008.
  • GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) 1.51 million shares, same as before.
  • Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) 2.757 million, same as last quarter.
  • Ingersoll-Rand (NYSE: IR) 636,600 shares; WAY DOWN from the 7.78 million listed last quarter.
  • Iron Mountain (NYSE: IRM) 3.3722 million shares, same as before.
  • Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) was just over 36.91 million shares; Same as last quarter and still well under the 62 million shares at one point in 2008.
  • Kraft Foods (NYSE: KFT) over 138 million; same as last quarter.
  • Lowe’s Companies (NYSE: LOW) 6.5 million shares, same as last quarter.
  • M&T Bank Corp. (NYSE: MTB) 6.71 million shares, same as before.
  • Moody’s (NYSE: MCO) was listed as over 39.2 million shares, but that is WAY DOWN from the 48 million last quarter.  Be advised that he has noted sales and hinted at more sales here.
  • Nalco Holding (NYSE: NLC) 9.0 million shares, same as last quarter.
  • Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) 7.641 million shares, same as before.
  • Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) 1.933 million shares, same as before, but we already know Buffett has or is selling out of non-BNSF shares in rail companies.
  • NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) 7.2 million, same as before.

Berkshire Hathaway & Buffett Q2-2009 Holdings G to O (BRK-A, GCI, GE, GSK, HD, IR, IRM, JNJ, KFT, LOW, MTB, MCO, NLC, NKE, NSC, NRG)

(NYSE: BRK-A)(BRK-B) has released its Q2-2009  public equity holdings as of June 30, 2009.  There are some portfolio changes that have been seen here from the end of Q1 and we have broken these down into 3 groups of ‘A to F’ and  ‘G to O’ and ‘P to Z’ so these are easier to see on one page.  Here are Warren Buffett’s holdings and accompanying notes for the group ‘G to O.’

  • Gannett Co. (NYSE: GCI) 3.447 million shares, same as before.
  • General Electric Corp. (NYSE: GE) 7.777 million shares is the same as before, but does not include the preferred investment from late 2008.
  • GlaxoSmithkline (NYSE: GSK) 1.51 million shares, same as before.
  • Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) 2.757 million, actually less than the 3.7 million shares in Q1.
  • Ingersoll-Rand (NYSE: IR) 7.78 million, same as last quarter.
  • Iron Mountain (NYSE: IRM) 3.3722 million shares, same as before.
  • Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) was just over 36.91 million shares; ABOVE the 32.5 million last quarter and above the 28.6 million in Q4.  This is still well under the huge 62 million shares last year.
  • Kraft Foods (NYSE: KFT) over 138 million; looks roughly the same as before.
  • Lowe’s Companies (NYSE: LOW) 6.5 million shares, same as before unlike at Home Depot.
  • M&T Bank Corp. (NYSE: MTB) 6.71 million shares, same as before.
  • Moody’s (NYSE: MCO) 48 million shares are listed as the same as before, however we already know that Buffett CUT THIS SINCE JUNE 30 and may cut it further.
  • Nalco Holding (NYSE: NLC) 9.0 million shares, same as Q1 after the Q1 position had been raised.
  • Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) 7.641 million shares, same as before.
  • Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) 1.933 million shares, same as before.
  • NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) 7.2 million, same as before.

A Massive Expansion Of Nuclear Projects?

Fresh support among Republican senators for a massive expansion of nuclear projects is unlikely as proposed, but it’s an indication of the concessions needed for Democrats to pass their energy reform bill.

That could be a boon for companies including NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE: NRG), Scana Corp. (NYSE: SCG) and Southern Co. (NYSE: SO), all of which are working on next-generation nuclear reactors they hope to start building by as soon as 2011.

They are likely to become the next trendy energy plays, now that T. Boone Pickens’ idea for the world’s largest wind farm has blown over. Read More »

Goldman Sachs Mixes Calls in Oil and Utilities (RIG, PTEN, HAL, OIS, NBR, DO, FTI, WR, NRG, NVE)

Oil Well ImageGoldman Sachs has made several key upgrades and downgrades this morning in the utility sector and in the oil patch.  While the utility sector was raised to attractive, some of the other calls seem more mixed on the surface in the oil patch.

Transocean (NYSE: RIG) was one of the few real upgrades as shares were raised to Buy from Neutral.  Patterson-UTI (NASDAQ: PTEN) and Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) were cut to Neutral, while Oil States International (NYSE: OIS) was cut to Sell.  Nabors Industries (NYSE: NBR) was cut to Sell from Neutral.  Diamond Offshore (NYSE: DO) and FMC Technologies (NYSE: FTI) were both upgraded, but only to Neutral from Sell.

Westar Energy (NYSE: WR) and NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) were both raised to Buy, while NV Energy (NYSE: NVE) was cut to Neutral.

New Name Doesn’t Help (RRI, NRG)

What’s left of Reliant Energy is now called RRI Energy, Inc. (NYSE:RRI) following the sale of Reliant’s Texas retail segment to NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG) that was completed on May 1st. The company reported a net EPS loss of -$0.43, compared with an EPS profit of $1.07 in the same period a year ago. Reported revenue reached $466.2 million, compared with $879.8 million a year ago.

NRG is the Company of ‘No’ (NRG, EXC, RRI)

NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE:NRG) has sent a long letter to shareholders counseling them not to vote for the new slate of directors being proposed by Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC).  NRG notes that the price of Exelon’s fixed exchange ratio offer has dropped 17% since Exelon first announced its proposal to acquire NRG. The company is still pounding the point that Exelon’s offer is “inadequate and unacceptable.”  NRG also points out that its proposed acquisition of Reliant Energy Inc.’s (NYSE:RRI) retail business will result in the addition of $150-$200 million in annual EBITDA for NRG shareholders beginning immediately.

NRG-Reliant, When A Deal Looks Done (NRG, RRI, EXC)

money-stack-image1The US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission have granted NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG) early termination of the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act waiting period related to NRG’s proposed acquisition of the Texas retail business of Reliant Energy Inc. (NYSE:RRI).  NRG expects to close the $287.5 million deal during the second quarter of 2009.  That is, NRG expects to close the deal unless Exelon Corp. (NYSE:EXC) trumps it by acquiring NRG.  Shares in all three companies are down marginally this morning.

Exelon Fires Another Round (EXC, NRG, RRI)

NRG still hasn’t scheduled the meeting, but Delaware law requires that the meeting be scheduled within 13 months of NRG’s last annual meeting, which was held on June 14, 2008.

Utilities Merger Looks More Promising (EXC, NRG)

In mid-October, Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) offered to acquire NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG) in an all-stock deal at a fixed exchange ratio of 0.485 shares of Exelon stock for each share of NRG stock. The deal was worth about $6.2 billion at the time.

Exelon & NRG, Earnings and a Duel (EXC, NRG)

Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) rose nearly 1.5% yesterday after the company reported fourth quarter 2008 EPS of $1.07, up from $0.84 in 2007. Full-year revenue of $18.86 billion was almost $1 billion higher than estimates, and full-year EPS reached $4.13 slightly lower than estimated EPS of $4.17. The company reaffirmed guidance for 2009 for non-GAAP earnings of$4.00-$4.30/share. Exelon also confirmed that it will continue itsefforts to acquire NRG Energy Inc.(NYSE:NRG).
