Many of Apple’s suppliers are well-known, but the list includes Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD), Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY), Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM), Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. (NYSE: FCS), Flextronics International Ltd. (NASDAQ: FLEX), Jabil Circuit Inc. (NYSE: JBL), Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH), TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. (NASDAQ: TQNT), SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK), ON Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: ONNN), and Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM).

The report is based on 229 audits, of which 14 were specialized environmental audits and 27 process safety audits. Apple found 6 current cases of suppliers hiring underage workers and 13 historical cases of child labor violations. About these violations, the company said:

In each case, the facility had insufficient controls to verify age or detect false documentation. We found no instances of intentional hiring of underage labor. We required the suppliers to support the young workers’ return to school and to improve their management systems—such as labor recruitment practices and age verification procedures—to prevent recurrences.

Chinese environmental groups last year charged that 27 of Apple’s suppliers were dumping toxic gases and heavy metal sludges into the country’s land and air. The company’s audits revealed that 112 supplier facilities were not properly storing, moving, or handling hazardous chemicals correctly; 69 facilities were illegally dumping or failing to recycle hazardous waste; and 52 facilities failed to label hazardous materials. Apple also reported that 58 facilities failed to monitor and control air emissions.

Apple had come under increasing pressure to name its suppliers and to hold them to a higher standard following suicide attempts by 18 workers and 14 deaths at China’s Foxconn facility in 2010.

Kendle International Inc (NASDAQ: KNDL) is up 58% on heavy volume to $15.00, relative to a 52-week range of $7.68-$17.23. The company was purchased by INC Research for $15.25 per share.

On Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: ONNN) is up 8% premarket on moderate volume to $11.10, relative to a 52-week range of $6.07-$11.95. The company issued 2Q revenue of $900 million, compared to the consensus $860 million.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) is up 17% premarket on moderate volume to $38.60, relative to a 52-week range of $21.83-$38.86. The company reported stellar Q1 results.

Hansen Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: HNSN) is up roughly 50% premarket on heavy volume to $2.35, relative to a 52-week range of $1.24-$2.82. Philips recently acquired the rights to several technologies owned by Hansen for roughly $100 million in immediate and long-term payments.

On Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: ONNN) is down 4% premarket on moderate volume to $11.05, relative to a 52-week range of $6.07-$11.95. The company reported Q4 revenue slightly above expectations.

On Track Innovations Ltd. (NASDAQ: OTIV) is down more than 4% on high premarket volume to $3.00, relative to a 52-week range of $1.55-$4.25.

XTO Energy Inc (NYSE: XTO) rose over 18.3% to a yearly high of $49.10 after Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) buy XTO Energy in an all-stock transaction worth $31 billion.

This is roughly a premium of 52% to yesterday’s closing price of $3.28and is at the higher end of the $2.83 to $5.83 trading range of thelast 52-weeks.  It also tallies the company up to a value of about $2.3billion.

Microchip is leading this acquisition and the deal will be partlyfinanced by the sale of Atmel’s nonvolatile memory and radio frequencyand automotive units to ON Semiconductor.

This is a very different merger when you consider how it is beingconducted.   But it also shows and proves that mergers can come even inthe most volatile or questionable economic times.
