(NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the launch of its streaming music service, Google Play Music All Access, at its I/O developers’ conference. The not-so-catchily-named service will cost $9.99 a month, although users who sign up before June 30th will pay $7.99.

The Google Play Music combines some of the features of Internet radio offered Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P), although Pandora is advertising supported, and Spotify, a subscription service that claims more than 6 million subscribers. Google allows subscribers to upload 20,000 songs at no charge, whether purchased from Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) or another source, and to play them back on a PC, tablet, or smartphone.

The odd thing about Google’s streaming music plan is that it really doesn’t make a compelling case for why to subscribe. About the only advantage it might offer to get users to switch from Spotify is that it’s seach function is very likely to be better. Whether its radio feature is superior to Pandora’s remains to be seen, but that’s hardly worth $7.99 or $9.99 a month.

Apple’s iTunes store and Amazon.com Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) MP3 store, of course, follow a pay-per-download model and the only question is when both of these giants decide to jump into the streaming music subscription business. Apple has made some noises about doing this, but no official acknowledgement so far. Apple, Amazon, and Google all offer cloud-based storage for a subscriber’s personal collection.

Far more interesting than this me-too music program would be some integration of YouTube, the single most dominant music streaming program in the world, with Google’s Android ecosystem. Such an integrated system could blow all Google’s competition out of the water. Today’s effort has got to be just a placeholder for something much different and much better.

Note to Google: The name Google Play Music All Access should be the first thing to get the heave-ho.

(NASDAQ: GOOG) is an understatement. The Korean electronics giant reaps 95% of the profit in the Android market, not far behind the 100% profit that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) hauls in from its proprietary iPhones and iOS market.

The data comes from the latest research by Strategy Analytics and reflects profits generated in the first quarter of 2013. Of profit totaling $5.3 billion, Samsung takes an estimated $5.1 billion, with LG Electronics capturing about $100 million and the rest divided among all other Android phone makers.

Not only does Samsung beat every other smartphone maker in taking profit from Android, Strategy Analytics’ executive director notes an even more glaring note:

We believe Samsung generates more revenue and profit from the Android platform than Google does. Samsung has strong market power and it may use this position to influence the future direction of the Android ecosystem.

Google’s Motorola division is among the also-rans in the profit-taking from Android, but it is unknown how much Google benefits from its control of the advertising network that feeds the Android ecosystem. Google’s gross profit last quarter topped $8 billion, but how much can be attributed to Android is not broken out by the company. Whatever the total, it is certainly not more than $5.1 billion.

Google kicks off its developers’ conference I/O today, and the company is expected to introduce a new streaming music service that could challenge both Apple’s iTunes and Internet radio provider Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P). Investors are upbeat, sending the stock above $900 a share for the first time and to a new all-time high of $911.76.

What is amusing to ponder is how much Google could have profited from Android if it had charged smartphone makers even a modest licensing fee.

The battle for control of the living room is about to be joined in earnest as big players like Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) tangle with smaller players like Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P), Spotify, Boxee, Roku, and Hulu.

These aren’t the only contenders. The makers of game controllers are also in the fray: Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) has added video streaming capabilities to its Xbox; Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) will include game streaming on the coming PlayStation 4; and Nintendo and start-up controller firm Ouya already support video streaming.

The list of music and video streaming providers is seemingly endless. And all of them rely on the same thing: content. Most of that is controlled by well-established entertainment companies like The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS), CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS), Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA), and other movie, TV, and music producers. And the cable and wireless carriers also want a piece of the action; see for example, Verizon Communications Inc.’s (NYSE: VZ) deal with Coinstar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSTR) for an on-demand streaming service.

The leader in video streaming, by a long mile, is Google’s YouTube. Google is trying to monetize the popularity of its video programming, but the efforts there have just begun. Intel is making a big push into building an ‘over-the-top’ box and is in negotiations with producers like Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX) and Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB) for content. How successful Intel is in negotiating prices remains to be seen, but the world’s dominant chipmaker is likely to have to pay a premium price for content, first because it’s large and can afford it, and second because the content companies are scared to death that they’ll leave a nickel on the table.

One additional wrinkle in video streaming is the potential sale of Hulu, co-owned by Disney, Comcast, and News Corp. (NASDAQ: NWSA). A sale would almost have to include content licensing for a long time at a reasonable price to the buyer. Without that, the streaming players are better off with Hulu going out of business. How Hulu’s co-owners handle a sale of the company will speak volumes about their thinking for the other licensing deals they’ve made or will make in the future.

The lead in music streaming probably belongs to Pandora, but Spotify has been pushing hard with its subscription model. It has been successful enough that Apple and Google are both said to be considering jumping into the music streaming business. Apple is apparently holding out for better pricing from the music publishers, but those guys have learned their lesson from iTunes and won’t be giving away the store again this time.

Another interesting wrinkle in the battle for the living room is Spotify’s reported plan to offer streaming video. According to a report at Business Insider, Spotify is looking for partners to help it fund the creation of its own content. Spotify, which is still privately held, has a paper value of around $3 billion, but one has to wonder how long investors will continue putting up big money if either Apple or Google launches a competing music service or Intel launches a killer video streaming product. Original content is expensive to produce and while it can be a big winner, it can also be a loser. HBO started out showing old movies and gradually moved to producing original content like “The Sopranos.” Spotify apparently believes it can shorten the cycle and go directly to producing original content. That’s a big gamble.

How do investors sort out the winners and losers? Obvious winners are the media companies like Disney and HBO that produce content. But the revenues from adding streaming licenses is likely to be only incremental. Disney’s a $100+ billion company that reported more than $11 billion in revenues in the December quarter. The 3-year deal Disney signed with Netflix is worth a suspected total of around $1 billion. That’s not chump change, but Disney won’t likely go broke without it.

And if any of the streaming video or music services really takes off? Then the content providers will jack up the prices and force the also-rans out of the bidding.

As for the streaming providers themselves, if Apple or Google gets into the business that could spell the end for the smaller players, whether solely streaming companies or hardware companies. Intel is committed and would have to slug it out with the other big two if one or both jump in. The Verizon-Coinstar joint venture has a chance, but a slim one.

Netflix, which <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/26/is-netflix-really-a-225-stock/"title="Is Netflix Really a $225 Stock?" >we’ve noted elsewhere today, is currently a darling again after having spent 18 months or so in the doghouse. The stock is flirting with $200 a share again, but that’s still $100 a share below its peak. The company’s bet on its original production of “House of Cards” won’t be known in any specificity until Netflix reports first-quarter earnings. Interestingly, Netflix followed the HBO model of starting with old movies and then moving to original production and, in Netflix’s case, some big exclusive licensing deals. We’ll know better in a few weeks how that worked out and whether Netflix can maintain its status as an entertainment darling.

And Pandora and Spotify? They remain at the mercy of the music publishers who have historically been merciless. Without some serious financial backing it’s hard to see how either makes it, especially if Apple and Google are about to jump into the streaming music business.

Despite a significant drop in U.K. industrial production in February, the country’s trade deficit was narrow than expected and the FTSE 100 index actually rose. Elsewhere in Europe the few data points that were released today did not move markets much one way or the other. In Asia, the Chinese government tried to persuade investors (not altogether successfully) that downturns in yesterday’s data reports were mainly due to the lunar new year. In the U.S., there was no early morning data and few earnings reports of note. A report on job gains and losses was mostly positive (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/12/u-s-firings-drop-job-openings-increase/"title="U.S. Firings Drop, Job Openings Increase" >here), and the afternoon auction of 3-year Treasury notes went off at a yield of 0.411%, identical with the February auction.

The U.S. dollar index rose 0.02% today, now at 82.594. The GSCI commodity index is down fractionally at 648.72, with commodities prices mostly mixed again today. WTI crude oil closed up 0.5% today, at $92.54 a barrel, following the release of the EIA’s short-term energy outlook (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/12/u-s-crude-production-to-rise-gasoline-prices-to-fall-later-eia/"title="U.S. Crude Production to Rise, Gasoline Prices to Fall Later — EIA" >here). Brent crude trades down 0.6% at $109.61 a barrel. Natural gas is down 0.3% today at about $3.64 per million BTUs. Gold settled up 0.9% today at $1,591.70 an ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up less than 2 points to 14,450.06 (0.01%), the NASDAQ fell more than 10 points (-0.32%) to 3,242.32, and the S&P 500 fell -0.24% or nearly 4 points to 1,552.48.

There were a several <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/12/top-analyst-upgrades-and-downgrades-aapl-amx-bby-bkd-coh-cvs-dks-ltm-mos-p-rsh-rht-shw-sfd-tjx-uri-pay-xoom/"title="Top Analyst Upgrades and Downgrades (AAPL, AMX, BBY, BKD, COH, CVS, DKS, LTM, MOS, P, RSH, RHT, SHW, SFD, TJX, URI, PAY, XOOM)" >analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) raised to ‘buy’ at Goldman Sachs; RadioShack Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) maintained as ‘hold’ but price target cut to $420 at Jefferies; and The TJX Companies Inc. (NYSE: TJX) started as ‘overweight’ at Barclays.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night resulted in several price moves today, including these: CVR Energy Inc. (NYSE: CVI) is up 1.6% at $59.57; Diamond Foods Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND) is down 10.1% at $15.82; Fuel Cell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: FCEL) is down 4.1% at $1.00; Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) is up 0.8% at $41.81; Bon-Ton Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: BONT) is up 5.5% at $12.56; Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST) is up 1.2% at $103.68 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/12/costco-profits-depend-on-membership-fees/"title="Costco: Profits Depend on Membership Fees" >here); and Stage Stores Inc. (NYSE: SSI) is down 0.8% at $26.62.

Before markets open tomorrow morning we are scheduled to hear from Dole Food Company Inc. (NYSE: DOLE), Majesco Entertainment Co.
Some standouts among heavily traded stocks today include:

Glu Mobile Inc. (NASDAQ: GLUU) is up 15.3% at $2.79. The mobile game developer launched its first real-money mobile gambling game in the U.K.

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) is up 4.3% at $15.69. The retailer denies the CEO is leaving and the shares rise. Go figure.

Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA) is down 4.8% at $3.74. The social game maker says it will offer real-money gambling games, but Glu Mobile beat it to the punch today.

The French prime minister said the county needs to save €5 billion in spending this year, and he expects to achieve that through spending cuts. In Asia, Japan’s GDP growth for the fourth quarter was revised to flat with the previous year, again better than expected. The country also posted a small — and unexpected — trade surplus. China’s trade surplus was also larger than expected, likely due to the impact of the lunar new year holiday in February. Fitch downgraded Italy’s sovereign debt shortly after noon, briefly chilling investors (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/08/fitch-downgrades-italy-tourism-shoes-purses-not-enough/"title="Fitch Downgrades Italy: Tourism, Shoes & Purses Not Enough" >here).

Gold settled up fractionally today at $1,576.90 an ounce, and up 0.3% for the week.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up about 63 points to 14,392.46 (0.44%), the NASDAQ rose about 12 points (0.38%) to 3,244.35, and the S&P 500 rose 0.42% or more than 6 points to 1,550.77.

Navistar International Corp. (NYSE: NAV) rose handily on Thursday after activist investor Carl Icahn got his way on the board. Now J.P. Morgan has raised its rating to Overweight from Neutral.

Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) has shuffled the chairs in the C-suite after earnings.
