Markets in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. all took a turn getting beaten up today. In Asia, a weak report on China’s first quarter GDP growth came in lower than expected, and added to the woes brought on by gold. In Europe, the only economic data point out today was the eurozone’s international trade surplus, which was higher than expected. In the U.S., the Empire State manufacturing index (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/04/15/new-york-manufacturing-slides-lower-but-remains-positive/"title="New York Manufacturing Slides Lower but Remains Positive" >here) was lower and the National Association of Home Builders reported another slide in builder confidence (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/04/15/home-builder-confidence-at-six-month-low-prospects-brighter-though/"title="Home Builder Confidence at Six-Month Low, Prospects Brighter Though" >here).
The U.S. dollar index is trading up 0.10% today, now at 82.387. The GSCI commodity index is down 1.3% at 623.16. WTI crude oil closed down 2.8% today, at $88.71 a barrel, its lowest level of the year. Brent crude trades down 2.6% at $100.45 a barrel. Natural gas is down 1.7% today at about $4.13 per million BTUs. Gold settled down 9.3% today at $1,361.10 an ounce, following the largest one-day drop in 30 years and the lowest settlement in more than 2 years..

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 201 points to 14,664.27 (-1.79%), the NASDAQ fell more than 78 points (-2.38%) to 3,216.49, and the S&P 500 fell -2.30% or more than 36 points to 1,552.38.

For the individual investor, a source for independent research is always a positive for a portfolio. With no Wall St. agenda or investment banking considerations, independent research firms can truly call it as they see it. Today Argus made some interesting changes to three of their model portfolios.

In the Equity and Income portfolio, Argus sells its position in Atlanta-based AGL Resources Inc. (NYSE: GAS). AGL is an energy services holding company that distributes natural gas to residential, commercial, industrial and governmental customers in Illinois, Georgia, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Tennessee and Maryland. The company’’s Distribution Operations segment constructs, manages, and maintains intrastate natural gas pipelines and distribution facilities. The stock, which was cut to Underperform yesterday by Zacks, currently yields 4.60%.

Argus used the proceeds from the sale and other cash on hand to establish a position in office products giant Staples Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS). The company offers various office supplies and services, office machines and related products, computers and related products, and office furniture under Staples, Quill and other proprietary brands. Staples pioneered the office superstore concept, and it has been a leading distributor since 1986. Trading considerably below the 52-week high of $16.93, Staples also offers a solid 3.42% dividend. The Wall St. consensus price target for the stock is $12.50.

In the Argus Growth and Income portfolio, the firm sells two of its holdings. The first is Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F). Overall, Ford had its highest fourth-quarter pretax profit in more than a decade. On the negative side, Ford lost $732 million in Europe in the fourth quarter, and analysts are modeling continued losses in 2013. They expect European operations to begin to recover in 2014. Since inclusion in the Argus portfolio in December 2011, the Ford shares have appreciated more than 27% while providing an annual yield topping 3%.

Argus also sells medical technology company Becton, Dickinson and Co. (NYSE: BDX). Trading near a 52-week high, the company should continue to benefit from increased health care spending both in the United States and overseas, especially in emerging markets. But its guidance for 2013 was below expectations and it faces continued weak economic conditions in Europe. Since inclusion in the Argus portfolio in August 2010, the stock advanced 23% while providing an annual dividend yield exceeding 2%.

With the proceeds from the sales, Argus purchased shares of Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world’s largest independent enterprise software company. Its annual revenues exceeded $37 billion, with about half coming from overseas. The analysts at Argus feel that, while the company is clearly an industry leader, its valuation metrics do not always reflect this leadership position. Oracle is trading below the peer average trailing EV/EBITDA multiple. Although the shares yield less than 1%, Oracle is growing its dividend faster than the market. The current Thomson/First call estimate for the tech giant is $37.73.

Argus also is buying Houston-based Sysco Corp. (NYSE: SYY). The company markets and distributes a wide range of food and related products, primarily to the food service or food-away-from-home industry. Overall revenues were bolstered by moderate food-cost inflation (up 2.2%), acquisitions and higher volumes. The analysts expect Sysco’s business transformation initiative to improve operating efficiency over the long term, and the shares provide an above-market yield of 3.5% at current prices. The current consensus price target estimate for the stock is $30.

In their Mid-Cap Growth portfolio, Argus sold two current holdings. Hologic Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX) develops and manufactures diagnostic and medical imaging systems, primarily serving the health care needs of women. Along with equipment and device sales, Hologic generates more than half its revenue from consumables and disposables. Since inclusion in the portfolio in January 2011, Hologic shares have appreciated approximately 18%.

Argus also sells its position in Gentherm Inc. (NASDAQ: THRM), which offers design, development and manufacture of heating, cooling and ventilating devices worldwide. The company’s principal product is its Climate Control Seat (CCS) system, which permits drivers and passengers to control the heating and cooling of their seats. Another good portfolio name, the shares have appreciated almost 19%.

For the Mid-Cap Growth portfolio, the analysts add Zimmer Holdings Inc. (NYSE: ZMH), the nation’s largest pure-play maker of orthopedic devices. The company designs, develops and manufactures reconstructive orthopedic implants, including joint, dental and spinal implants; trauma products; and related orthopedic surgical products. Argus recently upgraded the Zimmer shares to Buy, based on the belief that improving financial metrics, combined with higher surgical volumes at hospitals, will drive stronger sales and EPS growth in 2013. The consensus estimate for Zimmer is $76.50.

Also added to the portfolio is Pep Boys — Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE: PBY). The company provides automotive repair and maintenance services, tires, parts and accessories. It operates 740 stores and more than 7,200 service bays in 35 states and Puerto Rico. Although shares are trading in the lower half of their 52-week range, Pep Boys expects improved performance beginning in the fourth quarter, reflecting the impact of more-moderate gasoline prices, an increase in vehicle miles driven and a return to more-typical seasonal trends. The consensus price target for the stock is $11.

Portfolio management is not only picking the right stocks, it is the art of knowing when to sell winners and losers. Investors can note that Argus was willing to take quality gains and rotate the capital to stocks they felt had more upside, a strategy that always makes sense.

In Europe, unemployment data from Spain was awful, but not as bad as many had feared (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/12/04/spains-unemployment-edges-closer-to-5-million/"title="Spain’s Unemployment Edges Closer to 5 Million" >here). The British Chamber of Commerce lowered its estimate for U.K. GDP growth from 1.2% to 1% in 2013 and from 2.2% to 1.8% in 2014. Asian markets responded with a yawn to a 0.25% rate cut by the Reserve Bank of Australia. Japanese markets reacted badly to soft U.S. manufacturing data from yesterday.

The U.S. dollar index fell today, now down 0.31% at 79.634. The GSCI commodity index is up 0.1% at 650.78, with commodities prices mostly lower today. WTI crude oil closed down 0.7% today, at $88.50 a barrel. Brent crude trades down 1% at $109.83 a barrel. Natural gas is down 1.5% today at about $3.54 per thousand cubic feet. Gold settled down 1.5% today at $1,695.80 an ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 14 points to 12,951.70 (-0.11%), the NASDAQ down more than 5 points (-0.18%) to 2,996.69, and the S&P 500 fell -0.17% or more than 2 points to 1,407.04.

There were several <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/12/04/top-analyst-upgrades-and-downgrades-ceco-glw-dmd-dltr-etn-hlf-iaci-ldk-ns-zeus-ptnr-renn-spw-teva/"title="Top Analyst Upgrades and Downgrades (CECO, GLW, DMD, DLTR, ETN, HLF, IACI, LDK, NS, ZEUS, PTNR, RENN, SPW, TEVA)" >analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Demand Media Inc.

AutoZone Inc. (NYSE: AZO) reported first quarter fiscal 2013 results before markets opened this morning. The auto parts retailer reported quarterly diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $5.41 on revenues of $1.99 billion. In the same period a year ago, it reported EPS of $4.68 on revenue of $1.92 billion. Today’s results also compare to the Thomson Reuters consensus estimates for EPS of $5.39 and $2.02 billion in revenue.

The company’s CEO said:

While this past quarter’s sales results were lower than planned, they were not surprising to us. Regional sales discrepancies continued to challenge our results, however we began to see improvements in our more challenged regions late in the quarter.

AutoZone also announced this morning that it is acquiring online parts seller AutoAnything for an undisclosed amount.

Compare AutoZone’s results with those of competitor Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE: PBY), which reported quarterly results after markets closed last night. Pep Boys’ revenues totaled $509.6 million and the company posted a net loss of $0.13 per share. The consensus estimates had called for EPS of $0.15 on revenues of $527.8 million.

At AutoZone, same-store sales rose 0.2% in the quarter, while Pep Boys’ same-store sales fell 2.7%. AutoZone claims more than 5,000 stores worldwide to Pep Boy’s 720. Pep Boys has never recovered from its failed acquisition by Gores Group at $15 a share. When an acquirer would rather pay a $50 million breakup fee than complete an announced deal, that is not a good sign for the future.

Neither company benefits from the rise in new car sales. Parts dealers always do better when consumers fix up older vehicles instead of buying new ones. The state of the U.S. economy after the beginning of the new year will play a large role in how these stores perform in 2013.

Shares of AutoZone are down 1.6% in premarket trading this morning at $371.97, in a 52-week range of $313.11 to $399.10. Thomson Reuters had a consensus analyst price target of around $421.00 before today’s results were announced.

Pep Boys shares are down 6.4% this morning, at $10.00 in a 52-week range of $8.31 to $15.46. The consensus target price for the stock was about $10.30 before last night’s results were announced.

In Asia, markets were mixed as China’s PMI reading was the highest in seven months but still below expectations. In the U.S., the November ISM index came in lower than expected (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/12/03/november-ism-bordering-recession-ahead-of-the-fiscal-cliff/"title="November ISM Bordering Recession Ahead of the Fiscal Cliff" >here) and U.S. construction spending rose in October by more than expected (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/12/03/october-u-s-construction-spending-continues-rising/"title="October U.S. Construction Spending Continues Rising" >here). Automakers reported November U.S. sales today that indicate a seasonally adjusted annual sales rate of 15 to 15.3 million units sold for 2012 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/12/03/more-data-on-november-u-s-car-sales/"title="More Data on November U.S. Car Sales" >here).

The U.S. dollar index fell today, now down 0.35% at 79.875. The GSCI commodity index is up 0.1% at 650.05, with commodities prices mostly higher today on the weaker greenback. WTI crude oil closed up 0.2% today, at $89.09 a barrel. Brent crude trades down 0.4% at $110.79 a barrel. Natural gas is up 1.1% today at about $3.60 per thousand cubic feet. Gold settled up 0.5% today at $1,721.10 an ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 59 points to 12,966.14 (-0.46%), the NASDAQ fell about 8 points (-0.27%) to 3,002.20, and the S&P 500 fell -0.47% or nearly 7 points to 1,409.47.

There were several <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/12/03/top-analyst-upgrades-and-downgrades-aapl-bbd-bsbr-rate-bsx-cnk-deck-dell-duk-elx-lulu-oxy-qlgc-rgc-rimm-teva-vz-wsm/"title="Top Analyst Upgrades and Downgrades (AAPL, BBD, BSBR, RATE, BSX, CNK, DECK, DELL, DUK, ELX, LULU, OXY, QLGC, RGC, RIMM, TEVA, VZ, WSM)" >analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: DECK) raised to ‘buy’ at Sterne Agee; and Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) raised to ‘buy’ with a $13 target price at Goldman Sachs.

The only earnings report of note today came from LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LTD). Shares are down 10.3% at $1.05 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/12/03/ldk-narrows-loss-offers-weak-outlook/"title="LDK Narrows Loss, Offers Weak Outlook" >here).

Before markets open tomorrow morning we are scheduled to hear from Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE: PBY), Autozone Inc. (NYSE: AZO), Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL), and Vail Resorts Inc. (NYSE: MTN)

Some standouts from today include the following stocks:

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) is up 7.1% at $2.36. The chipmaker is still getting a bump from the sale/leaseback deal on its facility in Austin, and there’s talk that the company’s recent foray into the ARM processor business could lead to a sale of the company.

Cleantech Solutions International Inc. (NASDAQ: CLNT) is up 21.3% at $4.85. The component maker’s CEO and his wife have agreed to purchase 157,966 shares of the company’s stock at $3.88 a share.

Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA) is down 9.8% at $2.22. The social networking game company lost two more executives today, and there’s still concern about the company’s future following the loosening of contract ties with Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB).

Stay tuned for Tuesday. Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo is giving a speech. We have also noted the following events on the schedule (all times Eastern):

7:45 a.m. – ICSC-Goldman store sales

8:55 a.m. – Redbook

11:30 a.m. – 4-week Treasury bill auction
