China’s imports number fell more than expected, another sign that an economy that grew at 10% or more per year for a decade has moved into a recession of sorts. Exports decreased 0.5% and imports fell 15.3% from a year earlier in January. The overall trade surplus was $27.3 billion. The International Monetary Fund reported last week that its forecast of 8.4% GDP growth in China this year could be much too high. That number could drop by four full points if trouble in Europe grows. And it has. Greece recently said its unemployment rate reached nearly 21%. The number is already higher than than in Spain. Several of the eurozone’s southern countries have admitted that they are in new recessions. China may have begun to import less because it does not need raw materials for its factories and its new middle class is concerned about its economic future.

Still No Greek Deal

The situation with Greece’s debt, which seemed better for a few hours as its leader met with European Union, European Central Bank and IMF officials in Brussels, is bad again. It appeared that those three groups would release the money Greece needs to cover its March obligations so as not to default. But that capital comes with strict restrictions, and the Greeks may be unable to accommodate them. Greece has to show its financiers that planned austerity programs are well underway and that all of the political powers in the country have endorsed them. That broad political endorsement is by no means assured as leaders jockey for the approval of sullen voters who believe austerity measures have gone too far.

Google Home Entertainment

Rumors have started to spread across the tech world that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) will release a home entertainment system that can stream music throughout people’s homes. The press has speculated that the world’s largest search company believes it can follow Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) into the hardware business. Apple is widely admired for its ability to marry devices with apps and entertainment. Google has started down the path of hardware integration with it purchase of handset firm Motorola (NYSE: MMI). Google may find the going rough, though. Most hardware companies have very modest margins, or make no money at all, as companies that make products to compete with the iPhone and iPad have already discovered.

Additional Job Cuts

PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) are the latest multinationals to “reorganize” their businesses for the future. At Alcatel this means a cut of 1,800 people. At Pepsi it means dropping 8,700 workers. These restructurings are presented to investors and the press as ways to drive efficiency and margins. A look below the surface at most companies that take this path reveals that sales have faltered and management needs a way to show investors that they can make even modest returns.

The three major US stock indexes opened a bit higher this morning, and after some volatility have managed to get to the final half hour of trading with a modest gain. Some news is leaking out about the Greek debt swap deal being done, but what’s being reported is not likely to be welcomed in by ordinary Greeks. The dollar has been down most of the day as everyone seemed to believe an announcement on the Greek debt deal was imminent. The dollar index is down -0.187% — a slight uptick from its lower level this morning — at 78.591. Crude oil is up strongly, with WTI crude up 1.15% at $99.85/barrel and Brent crude up 1.16% at $118.56/barrel. Gold settled up 0.6% at $1,741.20/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly 7 points to 12,890.61 (0.05%), the NASDAQ rose more than 11 points (0.39%) to 2,927.23, and the S&P 500 rose 0.15% or 2 points to 1,351.96.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including A123 Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: AONE) cut to ‘sell’ at Wunderlich; Expedia Inc. (NASDAQ: EXPE) cut to ‘hold’ at S&P Capital IQ; Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) reiterated as ‘hold’ with $15 target price at Cannacord Genuity; Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) cut to ‘perform’ at Oppenheimer and named ‘Bull of the Day’ at Zacks; and 3M Co. (NYSE: MMM) cut to ‘hold’ at Deutsche Bank. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) got a lift from a target price increase to $665, which we cover here. We’ve also got a story on how Apple gets 80% of the operating profit among all the phone makers.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) is down -2.1% at $20.00 (here’s our coverage); American Superconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: AMSC) is down -8.74% at $5.50; Bunge Ltd. (NYSE: BG) is up 5.9% at $63.25; Dunkin’ Brands Inc. (NASDAQ: DNKN) is down -2.35% at $28.33; Lorillard Inc. (NYSE: LO) is up 9.8% at $124.46 after posting a new 52-week high of $127.68 earlier today; Pepsico Inc. (NYSE: PEP) is down -3.6% at $64.37 (our coverage here); Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE: PM) is up 2.8% at $80.08 after setting a new 52-week high of $80.99 earlier today; Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) is nearly flat at $2.19 (additional coverage here); and Teradata Corp. (NYSE: TDC) is up 10% at $63.85 after posting a new 52-week high earlier today of $64.97.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Imperial Sugar Co. (NASDAQ: IPSU) is up more than 79% at $6.02. The sugar refiner and marketer said it is nearing a sale of one of its divisions.

Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) is up 20% at $11.08. The solar panel maker is getting a big boost from a report that China will add about 3,000 megawatts of solar PV generation this year, although some analysts think the total will be double that. Other Chinese solar panel makers are also getting a nice bump from the news. We have another view of the sudden rise here.

Diamond Foods Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND) is down more than -36% at $23.36 after posting a new 52-week low of $21.44 earlier today. The snack food maker will re-state accounting and that jeopardizes the deal to purchase the Pringles brand from Proctor & Gamble (NYSE: PG). See our coverage here.

Groupon Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN) is down more than -15% at $20.82. The Internet coupon company posted weak earnings last night.
Ceasars Entertainment Corp. (NASDAQ: CZR) is down about -3.8% at $14.80. The share price nearly doubled at yesterday’s IPO, to a high of $17.90, but the stock is coming back to earth today.

(NYSE: PEP) is trying to turn a wrong-way ship. Whether this is the right path is going to be up for debate. During a recovery, layoffs are not always viewed as well.

The soft drink, beverage and snack maker’s net income for the fourth quarter of 2011 was up 4% to $1.42 billion. This came to $0.89 EPS, but the pre-item report of non-GAAP came in it $1.15 EPS. Thomson Reuters was expecting a consensus of $1.13 EPS. The company’s sales were up by more than 10% to $20.16 billion and that was also slightly above the consensus estimate of $19.89 billion in sales.

Where the story gets interesting the layoffs: 8,700, or about 3% of the company’s work force. The job cuts are part of a cost-cutting strategy aimed to save $1.5 billion over the next three-years. It also comes on top of what is said to be a higher push in marketing and advertising.

Cost pressure and a move toward healthier drinks have been a challenge. Pepsi closed at $66.74 and the 52-week range is $58.50 to $71.89. Shares are indicated down about 1% ahead of the opening bell. Investors are currently leaning more toward Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO).

(NASDAQ: ATVI); Bunge Ltd. (NYSE: BG); Carbonite Inc. (NASDAQ: CARB); CBOE Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CBOE); Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. (NASDAQ: DNKN); Expedia Inc. (NASDAQ: EXPE); LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE: LNKD); Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. (NASDAQ: MPEL); Nuance Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN); PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE: PEP); Petroleo Brasileiro (NYSE: PBR); Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE: PM); Republic Services Inc. (NYSE: RSG); Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI); Sonoco Products Co. (NYSE: SON); and Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC).

We have compiled earnings preview on each company using Thomson Reuters consensus estimates and added color on each if applicable. Some of these are market moving, some are sector moving, and some are just interesting for traders to watch around the earnings reports.

Activision Blizzard Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI) estimates are $0.56 EPS and $2.2 billion in revenues. At $12.55, the maker of World of Warcraft has been very range bound.

Bunge Ltd. (NYSE: BG) estimates are $1.57 EPS and $13.73 billion in revenues.

Carbonite Inc. (NASDAQ: CARB) estimates are -$0.23 EPS and $16.78 million in revenues. This will be a first real look of a full quarter and unfortunately this one has been cut in half as investors have tempered expectations for the personal data backup service provider.

A 30-second ad spot in this year’s Super Bowl costs an average of $3.5 million. That’s an 84% increase from 10 years ago and the highest amount advertisers have ever had to pay. While that is quite the price hike, it is in line with the growth in TV audience, which has just about doubled over the past decade. But despite spending this much to reach such a massive audience at once, the results are rarely impressive.

Read: The Eight Brands That Wasted the Most on the Super Bowl

Between 2002 and 2011, companies spent $2.5 billion on Super Bowl advertising, based on 24/7 Wall St.’s estimate. The top 10 spenders were responsible for more than one-third of that. And one company, Budweiser maker Anheuser-Busch, spent almost $250 million over the past 10 years on Super Bowl ads, or a whopping one-tenth of all Super Bowl ad spending.

24/7 Wall St. ranked total spending for all of the companies that advertised during the Super Bowl in the past decade. An analysis of the top spenders reflects how bad this investment can be. While some, such as Hyundai and Toyota have improved market share over that time, most have not. Based on total ad spending, product failures, change in market share, share price and sales, we identified the eight brands that wasted the most on the Super Bowl, including mega brands such as Coke, Budweiser, GM and Ford.

Based on 24/7 Wall St.’s analysis of Super Bowl ad spending, the top spenders fall into four major categories: automotive, film, food, including snacks and fast food, and beverages. Four of the top 10 Super Bowl advertisers are auto companies. Another four of the 10 are food and beverage manufacturers. Three movie studios are in the top 25.

Because Super Bowl ads are used by a small number of industries, many companies in those industries are forced to advertise just to keep up. Most of the top 10 spenders are perennial also-rans. Yum! Brands, owner of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, spent $67 million over the past 10 years. Meanwhile, McDonald’s, the indisputable market leader, spent less than half that amount and is not a top 10 spender. Similarly, E*Trade, well-known for the talking baby campaign, spent more than any other online brokerage firm, yet remains fourth in the industry.

Also Read: AMR – Saving Corporate America one Bankruptcy at a Time

24/7 Wall St. tabulated all of the commercials from the past 10 Super Bowls, as archived by Adland, the “world’s largest archive of Super Bowl commercials.” Using that data, 24/7 calculated the number of commercials each company bought, as well as their length, including any available pregame, postgame and prime advertising commercials. To estimate the total amount each company spent on Super Bowl advertising in the past decade, we used the average costs of a 30-second commercial spot each year and the total number of minutes of advertising time recorded by Adland.

These are the eight brands that wasted the most on the Super Bowl.

Just because certain products have a low price tag does not mean they cannot sell for billions of dollars. In fact, some of the cheapest products make the most money for their companies. 24/7 Wall St. identified some of the best-selling consumer goods and food products costing under $5 and the companies that make them. The cheapest and most successful products are sold by companies with the strongest and oldest brands that spend the most on advertising.

Read the Ten Cheap Products Making American Companies Billions

All of the companies that make the most money from selling inexpensive items have exceptionally strong brands. They are highly recognizable and held in high regard. Coca-Cola, which makes billions of dollars off its trademark drink Coke, is the most valuable brand in the world, according to brand valuation company Interbrand. According to Brand Z, McDonald’s, producer of the world’s favorite french fries, is the most valuable brand. Other brands, such as Cheerios, Campbell’s, and Starbucks, are also instantly recognizable.

These products have such strong brands partly because their parent companies spend huge sums of money on advertising. In 2011, Procter & Gamble, maker of Gillette razors, spent $9.3 billion on ads for all products — 11.3% of its total sales. This amount increases substantially each year, reflecting the lengths companies must go to preserve market share. Ian Cook, chief executive of Colgate-Palmolive, recently promised “increased advertising support behind many new and existing Colgate products” in 2012 to protect its global standing. The company said it had increased advertising spending in the fourth quarter to $428 million, up 5% from one year ago.

Additionally, these brands benefit from having been around for years and having existed in the public conscious a very long time. Products such as Coke, Colgate toothpaste, and Dole bananas have been around since the 19th century. Campbell’s soup and Cheerios have been household staples since the middle of the 20th century. Consumers have grown to trust the brands and expect a certain level of quality.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 500 largest companies by sales to identify the ones that focus on inexpensive consumer goods and low-priced food products. We then looked at the most inexpensive products sold for less than $5 and hold the highest market share. These are the cheapest products making American companies billions.

Eastman Kodak (NYSE: EK), established nearly 140 years ago, soon may declare Chapter 11. It is burdened by debt, loses money and has been unable to license most of its 1,100 patents. It hopes a bankruptcy judge will handle an auction of its intellectual property. The digital assets might have value to other companies in the software and hardware IP wars. There is a question about why firms like Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) have not been aggressive buyers already. Perhaps Kodak has overplayed its hand. Its IP may not be worth much at all.

French Bond Auction

France staged a bond auction, and there was an increase in the yields it had to pay. That indicates that investors are worried about the nation’s financial future and its AAA bond rating. Ten-year notes were sold at a yield of 3.29%, up from 3.18% at the last auction on December 1. Thirty-year note yields rose to 4.5% from 3.94% in December. The news is not good for more financially troubled countries like Italy and Spain. France’s rates might have set a firewall, if they had remained reasonably low. That would have been an indication that international capital market investors had a tiny bit more confidence in sovereign paper issued by nations in the eurozone. That, however, did not happen at the French auction.

Pepsi Layoffs

Pepsico (NYSE: PEP) may lay off 4,000 people and cut pension contributions, according to rumors published in The New York Post. This would be about 1% of the firm’s employee base. There is a great deal of pressure on CEO Indra K. Nooyi . She has not been able to improve the growth of Pepsi’s core soda business, and some investors believe her turn at the helm should end. Cost cuts and layoffs usually help boost the fortunes of big company management. It rarely lasts if sales do not increase.

Strait of Hormuz

Oil remains well above $100 a barrel on worries that Iran could try to shut the Strait of Hormuz. Speculators believe that crude could rise to $150 quickly if that happens. If oil stayed at that price for any time, it would derail the weak global economic recovery. Western naval forces may decide that it is worth the risk of armed conflict to keep the waterway open.

But the whole picture is actually more complex than that. China’s real appeal to American corporations is that the huge population growth has been coupled with a sharp expansion of the middle class. As a result, the Chinese market probably will become more important to consumer goods and technology companies in the next few decades than the U.S. is today.

Read The Most Popular American Companies In China

China’s population in 1960 was 667 million, more than double that of the United States in 2010. China now has 1.34 billion residents. The increase would not matter much to companies if the population was still largely rural and poor, as it was half a century ago. But, in fact, the manufacturing industry that has become the engine of China’s GDP growth also has rapidly built a huge middle class, one made up primarily of factory workers. And this middle class continues to grow. The United Nations Population Division and Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) predict that China will have 1.4 billion middle-class consumers by 2030, compared to a forecast of 365 million in the U.S. The stakes for American companies in China are rising.

The most important consumer target markets for companies in China largely mirror those in the U.S. American companies find themselves competing with foreign multinationals for these sales.

Retailers, led by American companies like Walmart (NYSE: WMT), have begun to open thousands of locations across China. Much of the competition for the retail market there comes from corporations based outside America, particularly France’s Carrefour. The situation in the athletic gear market is similar. Nike (NYSE: NKE) has a strong sales base in China, but so does Germany’s Adidas. Li Ning, a Chinese company, is the second largest market share in terms of sales. General Motors (NYSE: GM) is the leader in the Chinese light truck and car market. Volkswagen sells nearly as many vehicles as GM. Several large local car companies are owned and operated, in part, by Chinese government-controlled entities.

American companies that need strong sales in China to maintain their positions as global leaders will face challenges unique to the People’s Republic. The level of piracy of Western goods is remarkably high. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) estimates that four-fifths of Windows OS software in China is pirated. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone knockoffs are widely available there as well. American corporations will have to fight the problem, but accept that it cannot be entirely conquered, or, in some cases, even significantly reduced. Even manufacturers like Boeing (NYSE: BA) and GM have to contend with the fact that their Chinese partners may “borrow” some of their expertise and patent-protected knowledge.

24/7 Wall St. has identified the American companies that have done the best job of tapping into this growing market. We reviewed America’s most iconic brands that are top sellers in the U.S. and abroad and reflect a cross-section of the economy. We then selected 10 companies with the largest market share in China by industry and product category to identify the most popular American brands with the most to gain — and the most to lose.
