Unlike the in United States, the trend is in the wrong direction. The lowest rates were in Germany (5.7%) and the Netherlands (4.9%), as would be expected. Also expected were the horrendous rates in Spain (23.6%) and Greece (21.0%). These two figures were up sharply from a year ago. It remains impossible to believe that the economies of Spain and Greece can recover. It is entirely possible that they will get worse and that gross domestic product will plunge at a more rapid rate than last year. The European Union’s new rescue package, set at more than $1 trillion dollars, is to help bailout countries with debt problems. None of it is meant to go to stimulus — which may be the only hope for the region’s most troubled economies.

Pinnacle Air Bankruptcy

Another airline has filed Chapter 11. This time it is Pinnacle Airlines (NASDAQ: PNCL), a small U.S. carrier. The firm announced that it will continue to operate. Most airlines use the Chapter 11 process to shed debt, fire employees and reset deals with airplane manufacturers. Pinnacle in no exception. In a press release the airline said:

Pinnacle expects to accomplish several key initiatives during the restructuring process to help ensure that it returns to profitability and remains viable over the long term as the regional airline industry continues to contract and transform. These initiatives include restructuring its key operating agreements with Delta Air Lines, winding down its operations with United Airlines, completing the wind-down of its Essential Air Service (EAS) flying with US Airways, achieving cost savings from its workforce, identifying additional opportunities across the organization to reduce costs, and ensuring that it has the appropriate fleet, staffing levels and network to operate profitably on an ongoing basis.

This means most unions, banks and manufacturers that do business with Pinnacle will suffer. Other airlines may have to do the same as Pinnacle and AMR, which declared bankruptcy earlier, as fuel costs rise to unsustainable levels.

Brent Crude Trades Higher

Oil moved higher again after a week of losses. China’s strong PMI figures and concerns about supply were the primary causes as Brent Crude traded near $123. Despite a drop at the end of last quarter, crude prices rose 4.2% for the quarter. Gasoline prices, based on a national average for a gallon of regular, held steady yesterday at an extremely high $3.925. Based on the same calculation, gas was $3.757 a month ago and $3.645 a year ago.

Auto Recalls

Another round of car recalls is likely, in what has quickly become a year of recalls. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported fires in engine of the General Motors’ (NYSE: GM) 2011 Chevy Cruz and Chrysler’s 2010 Jeep Wrangler. The announcement came a day after Honda (NYSE: HMC) said it would have to recall 554,000 vehicles to fix possible problems in their headlight wiring. These include certain CR-V compact SUVs from the 2002 through 2004 model years and Pilot large SUVs from 2003. The company said if the low beams of these vehicles stop working, it could cause crashes.

The list includes the following still-public stocks: Alimera Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALIM); AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR); American Apparel, Inc. (AMEX: APP); Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK); Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER); FriendFinder Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFN); Nortel Networks Corp. (NRTLQ); Pinnacle Airlines Corp. (NASDAQ: PNCL); Reddy Ice Holdings, Inc. (RDDY); YRC Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: YRCWD).

Almost all of these have either had a form of bankruptcy or reorganization, while others have been in the rumor mill for quite some time. We included a write-up on each, and have even have gone as far as discussing some caveats which could help some of these stocks to survive. There is even a chance that a couple of these could end up being major turnaround stocks.

Alimera Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALIM) saw a share price implosion take place in November after the FDA all but rejected its eye drug. We covered this one at BioHealthInvestor with a near 75% drop on the news after being public less than two years. Shares fell to $1.96 with a $61 million market cap and shares are now at $1.30 with a $41 million market cap. The good news is that it has no debt overhang and it may be able to scrap operating costs down to nothing. Still, we cannot see how it can fund itself through another set of trials. Mathematically it is more than financially challenged, even if the company manages to hang on as a NASDAQ listing.

AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR) is effectively done already. We had been expecting an NYSE delisting notice to come for a while, even though there was a time even in the last week of the year where shares gapped up big and traded as though there may be some intrinsic post-bankruptcy value left for common shareholders. That would not be the normal post-bankruptcy value. While anything is possible, this one will move to the pink sheets and will trade around with a 5-ticker symbol for a while.

American Apparel, Inc. (AMEX: APP) has so far managed to avoid being delisted and so far managed to avoid a bankruptcy through a shaky history. Still, things have been sketchy here for so long that even a near-40% jump in shares from $0.57 to $0.75 since its early December business update showed improving store sales metrics. This company has managed to survive on less than $10 million in cash but still has a net tangible value of $56 million despite a loss in 2010 of $86 million. Here is the caveat” American Apparel has managed to exist in this diminished state for some time and its controversial CEO has managed to hang on. Maybe the company can pull a rabbit out of a hat and turnaround. American Apparel often notes “going concern” as a risk under its safe harbor statements in press releases.

Read Also: Analysts Top Biotech Stocks For 2012

Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) has done everything wrong and had everything go wrong that could go wrong. Antonio Perez has been on our list of CEOs that need to be fired for years now and the company has stuck its head in the sand for far too long. The bankruptcy rumors have swirled for long enough. The real value left in the company is in the patents, but the company has not been able to make its patent machine turn into a survival machine. The KKR board members have also resigned and that could be a sign that the private equity firm will try to force a move here so it can secure whatever value is left. At the end of September when we polled our readers, the poll response was that Kodak was more likely to go bankrupt than Greece. Ouch.

US equity markets opened sharply lower this morning and continued falling before levelling off at around 200 pts down on the DJIA. The downturn followed closer examination of the European Union’s agreement last week which traders hoped would put an end to the debt crisis in Europe. That turned out not to be the case, however, with both Moody’s and Fitch Ratings expressing doubts about the permanence of the deal. An announcement of lowered guidance from Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) weighed on the tech sector. WTI crude oil is trading at $97.94/barrel shortly before today’s close, down about -1.5%, and gold is up about 1.85% at $1,744.50.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 162 points to 12,021.77 (-1.33%), the NASDAQ fell more than 34 points (-1.31%) to 2,612.26, and the S&P 500 fell nearly -1.5% or more than 18 points to 1,236.48.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) raised to overweight with an $82 target price at Morgan Stanley. Other ratings actions today include AutoZone Inc. (NYSE: AZO) maintained as ‘buy’ with a $381 target price at Argus, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. (NYSE: DD) cut to ‘neutral’ at Citigroup; El Paso Pipeline Partners L.P. (NYSE: ELB) started as ‘overweight’ at JPMorgan; Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN) and Toll Brothers, Inc. (NYSE: TOL) cut to ‘hold’ at KeyBanc.

Here are today’s post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Barnwell Industries Inc. (AMEX: BRN) is down about -2.8% at $3.09. There were no other earnings report of note today.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Diamond Foods Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND) is down more than -22% at $31.45. The snack food company faces more questions about its accounting. See our coverage for more details.

Vulcan Materials Co. (NYSE: VMC) is up more than 15% at $38.84. The construction materials company received an unsolicited takeover bid from competitor Martin Marietta Materials Inc. (NYSE: MLM).

Oxigene, Inc. (NASDAQ: OXGN) is up nearly 20% at $1.21. The biopharmaceutical company has signed an agreement with a Danish pharmaceutical firm to provide one of Oxigene’s cancer drugs in Europe.

Helix Biopharma Corp. (AMEX: HBP) is down nearly -13% at $1.36. The cancer drug development company has appointed a special committee and engaged an outside auditing firm to investigate claims of unauthorized “representations and assurances” made by certain shareholders to European shareholders who purchased the company’s shares in a private placement.

Pinnacle Airlines Corp. (NASDAQ: PNCL) is down nearly -16% at 1.17, after posting a new 52-week low of $1.08 earlier today. The regional airlines is initiating a program to cut costs and raise cash, and shares were downgraded today at Dahlman Rose from ‘hold’ to ‘sell’ with a target price of $0.75.

Rosetta Resources Inc. (NASDAQ: ROSE) is down -11% at $45.00. The oil & gas exploration & production company experienced disappointing results from two wells in northern Montana.

National Bank of Greece SA (NYSE: NBG) is down more than -15% at $2.03, after posting a new 52-week low of $2.01 earlier today. The bank is the victim of the lack of enthusiasm that developed over the weekend for the Eurozone agreement.

Stay tuned for Tuesday. Here are some noteworthy events on the schedule (all times Eastern):

Stocks opened lower this morning and trailed mostly lower throughout the day. Today’s wholesale inventory reported showed a gain of 1.6% and the initial jobless claims were substantially lower than expectations of 395,000, at 381,000. The two reports probably cancelled each other out as word hit the street that Europe is forecasting weaker growth and that today’s expected interest rate reduction was agreed with less than a unanimous vote by the ECB. The stress test results for European banks were released today, causing shares in some European banks to fall. WTI crude has fallen by more than $2 to $98.33/barrel and Brent crude is also down by about $1.65 at $107.86. Gold is down nearly -2%, at $1,710.40.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 198 points to 11,997.93 (-1.63%), the NASDAQ fell nearly 53 points (-1.99%) to 2,596.38, and the S&P 500 fell -2.11% or nearly 27 points to 1,234.35.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a price target of $24 at Argus. Other ratings actions today include Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. (NYSE: DO) started as ‘sell’ with a target price of $70 at Goldman Sachs; Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS) cut to ‘neutral’ at Janney; Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU) restarted as ‘buy’ at Sterne Agee; Philip Morris International, Inc. (NYSE: PM) cut from ‘buy’ to ‘neutral’ at Nomura; and Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB) started as ‘neutral’ at Goldman Sachs.

Here are today’s post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) is up 2.7% at $12.23; Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST) is down -1.3% at $86.33; Smithfield Foods, Inc. (NYSE: SFD) is down -2.6% at $24.29; Layne Christensen Co. (NASDAQ: LAYN) is down -4.1% at $23.61; and Korn/Ferry International (NYSE: KFY) is down -8% at $15.77.

Other standouts from today include the following shares:

DemandTec, Inc. (NASDAQ: DMAN) is up nearly 56% at $13.15. The cloud-software company has accepted a takeover bid from IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) of $13.50/share, a 57% premium over yesterday’s closing price.

Affymax, Inc. (NASDAQ: AFFY) is up more than 38% at $8.10. The US FDA has approved the company’s anemia drug for dialysis patients suffering from chronic kidney failure.

E-Commerce China Dangdang Inc. (NYSE: DANG) is up nearly 24% at $5.76. The Chinese e-commerce company has announced that it will issue an e-reader later this month and split content revenue with producers, keeping 40% for itself.

Invacare Corp. (NYSE: IVC) is down more than -25% at $15.39, after posting a new 52-week low earlier today. The medical supplies maker is in danger of having the US FDA close down some of its operations because Invacare has failed to comply with quality standards.

Pinnacle Airlines Corp. (NASDAQ: PNCL) is down about -23% at $1.47, after posting a new 52-week low of $1.40 earlier today. The regional airlines has initiated a program to cut costs and raise liquidity.

Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is down nearly -3.5% at $30.75. The electric car maker’s stock was downgraded by Morgan Stanley from ‘overweight’ to ‘underweight’ and the target price was slashed from $70 to $44.

Pinnacle Airlines Inc. (NASDAQ: PNCL) might as well have its wings clipped if you look at the news from this morning. Delta Air Lines, inc. (NYSE: DAL) has given notice of contract termination regarding its Delta Connection contract with Pinnacle. The effective date is on July 31.

Delta Air Lines claims that Pinnacle (NASDAQ: PNCL) did not meet the minimum arrival-time performance requirements for a period since flights began late last year, and Pinnacle plans to fight this contract termination as the airline said factors affecting on-time performance are beyond its control. Pinnacle’s CEO said its operational schedule is created by Delta and is a key component of on-time performance.

If this sounds familiar from Delta, there is a reason. Mesa Air Group (NASDAQ: MESA) saw a similar move in April, when Delta’s announced its intent to terminate its Delta Connection program with Mesa’s Freedom Airlines Inc. The problem was similar: due to a problem with the number of flights Freedom completed. However, last month Mesa won a preliminary injunction against Delta to keep Delta from canceling the contract. The ultimate and final outcome there is still pending.

Pinnacle is now trading at another 52-week low, which is becoming all too familiar in the airline industry. Shares are down 20% at $4.76 after 45 minutes of trading. The 52-week trading range is (well, was) $5.90 to $20.34.

If we weren’t in an environment of $130+ oil right now, you have to wonder if Delta would be trying to cancel its partnerships or not. Tattoo is chasing them right now. You can hear him. "Boss! The pain! The pain!"

These are far from all of the lows, but these are many highlighted stocks that traders will care about. The prices for today are based on the last hour of trading and prior ranges rather than the closing prices for this Friday.

AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR) hit a new low today on no direct news from a 52-week range of $22.06 to $39.42. Shares were down over 7% late in the day at $20.91. Hmm.. products, services, and maintenance to the airlines. Go figure.

Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings, Inc (NYSE: AVR) down to a new low despite an upgrade by Broadpoint Capital. Ethanol stocks have dipped this month after a report that corn-supplies will be tight this year. Hit a new low of $4.22 late in the day from a 52-week range of $4.39 to $20.85.

Cheniere Energy Inc. (AMEX: LNG) down today on a downgrade by Lehman Brothers yesterday, despite announcements that its LNG terminal in Louisiana will begin to receive shipments on August 12. Shares down over $2.00 to new low of $16.17 off a 52-week range of $18.40 to $43.50. This huge drop almost seems counterintuitive with sub-projects coming online and with energy prices in the stratosphere, but that downgrade from Lehman yesterday is ruling the roost.

Clorox Co. (NYSE: CLX) down to lowest points since 2004. Thursday, a Bernstein analyst estimated that third-quarter earnings could be lower than previously expected. Shares hit as low as $55.16 earlier today on a 52-week range of $55.37 to $69.36. Maybe the public realized how bad bleach is for the water supply.

Cintas Corp. (NASDAQ: CTAS) dropped to a new low after a downgrade by Lehman Brothers. Shares hit a new low of $27.35 before recovering late in the day on a 52-week range of $27.41 to $41.04. Uniform sales… what gets cut as employees get fired and as businesses trim expenses? Oh yeah, uniforms.

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) fell along with the market today with the other computer companies. They just happened to hit a new low. They dropped to $18.44 on a 52-week range of $18.53 to $ 30.77. The good news is that late in the day shares were back above the prior low. The bad news is that nothing is going its direction.

Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA) taking a hit from downgrades by JMP Securities and Ferris Baker Watts. They also cut their own guidance for first quarter estimates. It hit a new low of $6.30 off a 52-week range of $6.51 to $10.70.

LodgeNet Interactive Corporation (NASDAQ: LNET) down to a new low of $5.70 today. Apparently good hospitality isn’t enough keep the shareholders comfortable. The 52-week range is $5.90 to $38.11. As people cut back, maybe those in-hotel movies are easier to cut spending on.

Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNST) hit a new low today with a 52-week range of $23.00 to $50.28. It shouldn’t be out of a job anytime soon but if it is, it will know where to look. Shares down almost 4% at $22.20 late in the day.

Pinnacle Airlines Corp. (NASDAQ: PNCL) taking a hit in the wake of Frontier Airlines bankruptcy scare. Hit a new low of $8.22 on a 52-week range of $8.43 to $20.34. Stock edged back above that $8.50 level in last 20 minutes today.

Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (NASDAQ: SSCC) dipped to a new low off a 52-week range of $6.65 to $14.08. Shares were at $6.35 in the last 20 minutes today, down almost 8%. paperboard and packaging… what gets cut when stuff stops selling stores? Oh yeah, the packaging.
