Markets opened lower today and of the three major indexes, only the S&P 500 was able to break through to positive territory and stay there for most of the day. The DJIA stayed negative all day and the NASDAQ composite only briefly broke through to a gain. This morning’s encouraging report on non-farm payrolls and a drop in the unemployment rate didn’t have much positive effect, but things would like have been worse without the job gains. Two speeches by Federal Reserve Bank presidents stressed that policymakers need to do more about raising employment, and the comments were couched in terms that might indicate that the Fed is looking at raising the inflation target. Crude oil prices are mixed, with WTI crude at down -0.25% at $101.56 and Brent crude up 0.34% at $113.12. Gold was up only slightly, closing at $1,617.70.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down nearly 56 points to 12,359.92 (-0.45%), the NASDAQ rose more than 4 points (0.16%) to 2,674.22, and the S&P 500 fell -0.25% or more than 3 points to 1,277.81.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) cut to ‘market perform’ at Wells Fargo; Apollo Group Inc. (NASDAQ: APOL) reiterated as ‘outperform’ and target price raised to $60 at Credit Suisse; Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE: KSS) cut to ‘hold’ at Argus; SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK) raised to ‘buy’ at Sterne Agee; and FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) started as ‘outperform’ at Wells Fargo.

Earnings reports of note since markets closed yesterday include: Commercial Metals Co. (NYSE: CMC) is up more than 4% at $15.01; Apollo Group is up about 5.5% at $56.68, after posting a new 52-week high of $57.09 earlier today; Imperial Sugar Co. (NASDAQ: IPSU) is down nearly -6% at $3.32; PriceSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PSMT) is down nearly -15% at $60.13; Greenbrier Cos. (NYSE: GBX) is up nearly 9% at $25.97; and Texas Industries Inc. (NYSE: TXI) is down more than -3% at $28.15.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Acadia Healthcare Co. Inc. (NASDAQ: ACHC) is up nearly 19% at $11.60 after posting a new 52-week high of $11.81 earlier today. The healthcare services company agreed to pay $91 million to acquire three additional facilities in Arizona, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is up nearly 12% at $7.16. The doughnut maker recently opened its 10,000th store and the stock was upgraded to ‘overweight’ at Stephens with a target price of $8.50.

RF Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD) is down more than -19% at $4.55 after posting a new 52-week low of $4.45 earlier today. The technology company warned that sales in the third fiscal quarter would be 10% lower than previously forecast.

EnerNOC Inc. (NASDAQ: ENOC) is down nearly -9% at $9.43. The energy services company’s revenues are threatened by a recent regulatory ruling.

Saba Software Inc. (NASDAQ: SABA) is up more than 15% at $8.54. The cloud software company lost less than expected in its most recent quarter and said that it would return to profitability in the second of the year.

Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV) is up more than 10% at $1.73. The homebuilder’s stock is probably reacting to the remarks by two Fed presidents supporting additional lending and homebuilding.

Stay tuned for Monday. Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart is giving a speech. Here are the noteworthy events on the schedule (all times Eastern):

11:30 a.m. – 3- and 6-month Treasury bill auctions

3:00 p.m. – Federal Reserve consumer credit report

Short sellers often invest in stocks that have had sharp short-term gains and may have reached peak valuations. That would put Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) on most of those lists, along with Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY)

Shorts has taken a different tack recently. Data from the NYSE and NASDAQ for the period ending July 12 show that short sellers are holding positions in companies that are already in trouble. That list includes AMD (NYSE: AMD), which has not had a CEO for months. Short interest in the chip firm rose 21% to 83.5 million. Shares sold short in Citigroup (NYSE: C), still the financially weakest of the large banks, moved higher by 27% to 52.3 million. The short interest in Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) was up 10% to 108.3 million shares.

GM (NYSE: GM) has been troubled recently as consumer demand for cars and light trucks slackened in June. The trend will continue if unemployment stays high. Shares sold short in the largest car company in the U.S. rose to 52.3 million, up 22%. The retailers that have struggled the most recently are also on the list of most shorted stores. Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) has a short position of 42 million, which is up 18% from the last two week period. Shares short in Office Depot (NYSE: ODP) were higher by 17% to 34.3 million. The short interest in Home Depot (NYSE: HD) were up by 36% to 25.1 million. Home prices are still in free fall, and over 11 million home mortgages are underwater, which leaves their residents with very little capital for home improvement. Shares short in JC Penney (NYSE: JCP) were up by 23% to 28.3 million. The retailer recruited the head of Apple’s store unit, but same-store sales are still poor. The short interest in The Talbots (NYSE: TLB), which is considered the most troubled of the large retailers, was higher by 22% to 25.2 million

Stocks in tech companies that are considered poorly run or that are in businesses with great competition and low margins also made the list of companies with short interest increase. The short interest in Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) rose 28% to 78.9 million shares. Shares short in Aruba Networks (NASDAQ: ARUN) were up 15% to 17.6 million. The short interest in RF Micro (NASDAQ: RFMD) was up 14% to 21.8 million. Shares short in Rambus (NASDAQ: RMBS) 43% to 9.5 million.

Among the most widely traded stocks, the short interest in Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) fell 16% to 94.5 million. Experts may believe that its move into chip for wireless devices will be successful. Shares short in Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) dropped by 18% to 27.0 million. Its takeover of NBCU is in early stages. Shares short in GE (NYSE: GE) fell by 11% to 71.9 million. GE sold its controlling interest in NBCU to Comcast. Shares short in AT&T (NYSE: T) rose 17% to 63 million. Its cellular subscriber growth has slowed recently and regulators have begun to challenge its takeover of T-Mobile.

We have many after-hours movers after earnings and other reported events. We are tracking moves in Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc. (NASDAQ: BWLD), Keynote Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: KEYN), LDK Solar Co., Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS), Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN), RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD), and SuccessFactors, Inc. (NASDAQ: SFSF).

Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) was one we were having mixed emotions in ahead of earnings. In the current quarter, sales were put in a range of $1.75 to $1.85 billion and that was a disappointment. Shares are down over $3.00 or more than 8% at $37.13 on more than 2.2 million shares in the after-hours.

Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc. (NASDAQ: BWLD) beat earnings substantially at $0.81 EPS versus a Thomson Reuters figure of $0.73 EPS. Same-store sales were up and it is opening 100 new locations. For some reason the company did not introduce “The Ring Stinger” as the hottest wing sauce available. Shares are up 4.7% at $63.30 on more than 50,000 after-hours shares.

Keynote Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: KEYN) blew out earnings at $0.29 EPS versus $0.21 estimates; shares are up 9.9% at $23.35 on more than 32,000 after-hours shares.

LDK Solar Co., Ltd. (NYSE: LDK) lowered guidance after having closed up on the day by more than 3%… The company lowered revenue guidance by about $100 million in the first quarter but reaffirmed its 2011 range. Shares are down 4.55% at $10.90 on more than 2 million shares traded in the after-hours session.

MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS) is getting drilled after turning in $0.09 EPS versus $0.10 EPS estimates, but lower guidance is the real killer. Shares are down 12% at $9.40 on more than 365,000 after-hours shares.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN) is not an earnings play but it feels like one… The company turned in positive results with Sonfi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY) showing that the Phase III VELOUR trial evaluating ZALTRA in combination with the FOLFIRI chemotherapy regimen versus a regimen of FOLFIRI plus placebo met its primary endpoints of improving overall survival in the second-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Its shares are up 7.9% at $56.25 on more than 250,000 after-hours shares.

RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD) had a 23% drop in revenue and now the company sees a “flat to down 5%” revenue figure this quarter. RF chips and components aren’t universal winners, apparently. This one is down about 3.5% at $6.10 on nearly 300,000 after-hours shares.

SuccessFactors, Inc. (NASDAQ: SFSF) won but lost in its cloud-based business execution software solutions… The company SuccessFactors beat earnings estimates, guided Q2 revenues above consensus and it raised 2011 guidance. The company also announced that it was spending $290 million to acquire Plateau Systems for its leading learning management system, a Next Generation Portal technology, and CaaS- Content as a Service. SuccessFactors had a $3.15 billion market cap. The stock is down 8% at $37.05 on more than 230,000 after-hours shares.

Short sellers who have bet against tech shares hit the exits during the period which ended on March 31. The short interest in the world’s largest chip company, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), dropped 3% to 56.7 million shares. Shares sold short in Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) dropped 13% to 54.6 million.

Shares short in graphics chip leader Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) dropped 17% to 23.1 million. The short interest in RF Microsystems (NASDAQ: RFMD) dropped 9% to 18 million. Shares short in Seagate (NASDAQ: STX) dropped 11% to 12.4 million shares. The short interest in Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) fell by 6% to 17.8 million.

Although there is no way to measure the real interest of short sellers, it may be that the proliferation of computers, tablets, and smartphones is great enough to cause Wall St. to believe that sales of many chip and infrastructure firms will rise.

Short interest among other widely traded stocks was mixed: Level 3 (NASDAQ: LVLT) off 4% to 89.4 million, Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) up 19% to 28.9 million, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) down 14% to 94.4 million, AT&T (NYSE: T) up 10% to 56.8 million. and CBS (NYSE: CBS) up 90% to 21.1 million
