(NASDAQ: RGLD) was the latest gold player to report its corporate earnings. The good news is that the gold company revenues and earnings were up. The bad news is that it and Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX) have run into continued delays in Chile, and the price of gold is not working in its favor today.

Precious metals reserves on properties subject to Royal Gold’s interests (net of depletion) were approximately 82.8 million ounces of gold and 1.15 billion ounces of silver. This is lower than the 84.5 million gold ounces and 1.2 billion silver ounces from a year earlier.

During the third quarter of fiscal 2013, the gold interest owner showed a 7% increase in its royalty revenue to $74.2 million, while operating cash flow rose by 43% to $68.1 million. A noncash loss was realized on its available-for-sale securities of $12.1 million associated with the common shares of Seabridge Gold Inc. (NYSE: SA) that were acquired as part of the June 2011 transaction regarding the Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell Project. The company’s SEC filing shows its project by project updates.

It has been a very tough time for Royal Gold. Many of its gold investments were made when gold was higher, although it has many legacy projects from much lower gold prices on the books as well. The stock has drifted down to $53.69 from a 2012 peak of $100.84, and the stock is down almost 34% year-to-date in 2013.

Seabridge Gold Inc. (NYSE: SA) also has fallen on hard times, as its $11.07 price compares to a 52-week range of $9.63 to $20.34. Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX) is down at $53.47, and its 52-week range is $17.51 to $43.30.

It’s not that Cyprus claims a particularly large banking system, but the proposed haircut for their depositors makes depositors everywhere wary (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/18/cyprus-deposit-seizure-hitting-euro-and-piigs-banks/"title="Cyprus Deposit Seizure Hitting Euro and PIIGS Banks" >here). The Cypriot banking mess chilled markets in Asia and Europe today as well. There was little data released today, but the eurozone trade deficit came in higher than forecast and in China, house prices rose 2.1% month-over-month. In the U.S. the National Association of Home Builders index fell again in March, the second straight month of decline (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/18/home-builder-confidence-dips-further-in-march/"title="Home Builder Confidence Dips Further in March" >here). U.S. financial stocks performed poorly today, while tech stocks posted a gain as speculation abounded that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) would seriously boost its dividend.

The U.S. dollar index rose 0.48% today, now at 82.654. The GSCI commodity index is up 0.4% at 652.50, with commodities prices mostly lower today on the stronger dollar. WTI crude oil closed up 0.3% today, at $93.74 a barrel. Brent crude trades down 0.2% at $109.57 a barrel. Natural gas is down 0.1% today at about $3.87 per million BTUs. Gold settled up 0.8% today at $1,604.60 an ounce, its first close above $1,600 this month.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 62 points to 14,452.06 (-0.43%), the NASDAQ fell more than 11 points (-0.35%) to 3,237.59, and the S&P 500 fell -0.55% or nearly 9 points to 1,552.10.

There were a several <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/18/top-analyst-upgrades-and-downgrades-amd-aci-bby-bcc-cnp-crl-brew-gnrc-hpq-isrg-kmb-omx-odp-onnn-orly-btu-rgld-si-stan-symc-utx-vz/"title="Top Analyst Upgrades and Downgrades (AMD, ACI, BBY, BCC, CNP, CRL, BREW, GNRC, HPQ, ISRG, KMB, OMX, ODP, ONNN, ORLY, BTU, RGLD, SI, STAN, SYMC, UTX, VZ)" >analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Kimberly-Clark Corp. (NYSE: KMB) cut to ‘sell’ at Goldman Sachs; Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) raised to ‘buy’ at Citigroup (more coverage here); Royal Gold Inc. (NASDAQ: RGLD) started as ‘buy’ at BB&T; Arch Coal Inc. (NYSE: ACI) raised to ‘neutral’ at Nomura; and Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) raised to ‘overweight’ at Morgan Stanley.

Earnings reports since markets closed last Friday resulted in several price moves today, including these: Syntroleum Corp. (NASDAQ: SYNM) is down 12.3% at $0.40; Celsion Corp. (NASDAQ: CLSN) is up 1.9% at $1.08; Hanwha Solarone Co. Ltd.
Before markets open tomorrow morning we are scheduled to hear from FutureFuel Corp. (NYSE: FF), Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ: SBLK), FactSet Research Systems Inc. (NYSE: FDS), and Cintas Corp. (NASDAQ: CTAS).

Some standouts among heavily traded stocks today include:

Glu Mobile Inc. (NASDAQ: GLUU) is up 11.1% at $3.71. The mobile games developer has been upgraded by several analysts.

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) is up 6.6% at $16.50. The beleaguered retailer gets a boost today from an analyst’s plan to convert some of the company’s stores to a REIT.

Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) is down 2.3% at $3.35. The handset maker is declining as the U.S. release of the new smartphone from BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY) approaches later this week..

Stay tuned for Tuesday. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) begins its two-day meeting. We have also noted the following events on the schedule (all times Eastern):

Markets opened higher, but lost their energy by mid-morning. Asian markets were higher on some decent earnings reports out of China and other mixed data reports. In Europe, consumer confidence hit a six-month low in the U.K. and Europe’s unemployment ticked back up to 11.6% (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/10/31/eurozone-unemployment-rate-hits-a-record-11-6/"title="Eurozone Unemployment Rate Hits a Record 11.6%" >here). Eurozone members continue to wrestle with the Greek debacle following worse-than-expected estimates on that country’s debt forecast. In the U.S., mortgage applications fell and interest rates ticked back up (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/10/31/mortgage-applications-continue-slide-2/"title="Mortgage Applications Continue Slide" >here) and the quarterly report on U.S. employment costs was largely inline with expectations and mostly ignored (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/10/31/employment-cost-index-benefit-costs-rising-faster-than-wages/"title="Employment Cost Index: Benefit Costs Rising Faster Than Wages" >here).

The U.S. dollar index fell today, now down 0.04% at 79.901. The GSCI commodity index is down less than 0.1% at 635.79, with commodities prices mixed again today. Gold closed at $1,719.10 an ounce, up about 0.4% for the day, but down 3% for the month of October.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up about 10 points to 13,096.85 (-0.08%), the NASDAQ fell nearly 11 points (-0.36%) to 2,977.23, and the S&P 500 rose 0.01% or less than 1 point to 1,412.15.

(NYSE: KGC) reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.14 and $1 billion in revenue after the markets closed last night. The company posted EPS of $0.24 for the same period a year ago, and last year’s revenue totaled $1.07 billion. The results compare to the Thomson Reuters consensus estimates for EPS of $0.21 and $1.14 billion in revenue.

The company revised third-quarter production guidance downward, from 2.6 to 2.8 gold equivalent ounces to 2.5 to 2.6 million ounces following its sale of its 50% stake in a Brazilian mine. The company also revised production costs upward slightly, from $670 to $715 per ounce to $690 to $725 per ounce, reflecting a rise in West African and South American costs.

The company’s recently appointed CEO, J. Paul Rollinson, said:

I’ve been given the mandate from the Board to ensure that we deliver on the capital and project optimization process we announced earlier this year. This means striking the right balance between the objective of growing the business and generating free cash flow. It also means taking the time to get our growth projects right in terms of scale, sequencing, timing, and capital, in order to deliver the best return from every dollar we invest while maintaining our financial strength and liquidity.

Kinross also announced the appointment of Brant Hinze, formerly the company’s executive vice-president and chief operating officer, to the post of president and COO. Like Rollinson, Hinze brings a finance and accounting background to the job.

The company said that its realized price for the quarter was $1,568 a ounce of gold, compared with $1,448 a ounce in the same period a year ago. Production costs rose to $725 a ounce from $569 a ounce “mainly due to increased processing of lower grade ore, as well as higher costs for energy, labour, and consumables.”

For comparison, Royal Gold Inc. (NASDAQ: RGLD), which reported full-year and fourth quarter results this morning, obtained an average price of $1,673 a ounce for the year, up from $1,369 a ounce in 2011. But Royal Gold missed both the full-year and quarterly EPS consensus estimates, and revenues were also light. Royal Gold owns only shares in production royalties, and thus reports no production costs.

Following the appointment of its new chief executive, there has been some speculation that Kinross will either be acquired or broken up. With a market cap of nearly $9 billion, the company could only be acquired by one of the biggies like Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX) or Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM), neither of which is likely to want to pony up that kind of cash. Alternatively, Kinross may seek buyers for some of its better operations with the idea of financing development of its more promising prospects. Prospective buyers are also scarce on the ground, but perhaps a Chinese buyer could be flushed out.

Shares in Kinross are down about 4% in premarket trading at $7.83. The current 52-week range is $7.11 to $18.25. Thomson Reuters had a consensus analyst price target of $12.15 before today’s results were announced.
