Myriad Genetics Inc. (NASDAQ: MYGN) is seeing a benefit in its share price after actress Angelina Jolie wrote that a genetic test using Myriad’s gene sequencing tested positive for the gene with much higher risks for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The BRCA1 gene’s positive test led Angelina Jolie to have a double mastectomy.

What is interesting is that the news came at close enough to the same time that Genomic Health Inc. (NASDAQ: GHDX) filed to sell up to 10 million shares of common stock. That company is planning to raise the funds for general corporate purposes, which include working capital, capital spending, debt repayment or redemption, and future acquisitions and strategic investment opportunities.

Myriad Genetics has been at the center of much controversy because it has been in legal fights for years to protect that patenting of certain genes. By going after patenting the genes themselves, the argument was that Myriad was trying to own a piece of each and every one of us rather than merely patenting how it would identify certain genes or how to treat those genes.

Myriad shares are up 2.1% at $33.81 and the stock hit a new 52-week high of $34.67. Genomic Health Inc. is up 2.1% at $35.56 on the day. A much smaller player is Rosetta Genomics, Ltd. (NASDAQ: ROSG), but its shares have not felt the same reward and interest has avoided the highly volatile stock name as it has lost more than 80% from its peak value in the last year.

Economic data was mixed at best today, with the flash PMI number lower than expected in China (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/23/hsbc-flash-china-pmi-for-august-declines/"title="HSBC Flash China PMI for August Declines" >here), followed by weakness in the overall flash PMI from the Eurozone (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/23/eurozone-manufacturing-falls-for-seventh-straight-month/"title="Eurozone Manufacturing Falls for Seventh Straight Month" >here). Yesterday’s FOMC minutes offered more hope for additional easing, which pumped some life in this morning’s futures as well. New claims for unemployment benefits came in worse than expected (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/23/jobless-claims-heading-wrong-direction/"title="Jobless Claims Heading Wrong Direction" >here), while new home sales were higher than estimates (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/23/new-home-sales-jump-in-july/"title="New Home Sales Jump in July" >here). Housing prices in the U.S. also continued to rise, up 0.7% in June according to the FHFA.

The US dollar index fell today, now down 0.16% at 81.357. The GSCI commodity index is up fractionally today at 676.69, with commodities prices almost uniformly lower. WTI crude oil finished down 1% today, closing at $96.27/barrel. Brent crude trades up 0.03% at $114.95/barrel. Natural gas is down 0.2% today to $2.82/thousand cubic feet, following a larger-than-expected increase to U.S. inventories (our coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/08/23/natural-gas-inventories-rise-sharply-xom-chk-eog-ung-oih/"title="Natural Gas Inventories Rise Sharply (XOM, CHK, EOG, UNG, OIH)" >here). Gold settled at $1,672.80/ounce, up 2% at a four-month high on the expectation of more quantitative easing.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down about 114 points to 13,058.70 (-0.87%), the NASDAQ fell more than 20 points (-0.66%) to 3,053.40, and the S&P 500 fell -0.81% or more than 11 points to 1,402.11.

The Dow Jones is down 0.61%, the Nasdaq is down 0.66% and the S&P 500 is down 0.52%. Today’s market winners include an analyst upgrade and an acquisition, while today’s losers include a retailer who missed earnings and a giant technology company forseeing trouble in the future.

Here are Thursday’s market winners and losers.

Biggest Winners

Shares of Rosetta Genomics, Ltd. (NASDAQ: ROSG) are up 18.81% to 5.62 on trading volume of 4.5 million shares. Flyonthewall.com reports that the company has just received a ‘Buy’ rating from Aegis, and the target price has been set for $16. The 52-week high is $26.70.

Shares of The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAIN) are up 15.82% to $65.91 on trading volume of 1.9 million shares. The company announced Thursday it plans to buy some food lines from Premier Foods PLC for approximately $318 million. Before Thursday, the 52-week high was $58.31.

Biggest Losers

Shares of Big Lots Inc. (NYSE: BIG) are down 21.16% to $30.62 on trading volume of 4.3 million shares. The company earned 36 cents a share in the second quarter, below the 41 cents a share analysts polled by Reuters were expecting. Before Thursday, the 52-week low was $30.79.

Shares of Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ) are down 6.72% to $17.91 on trading volume of 21.4 million shares. While the company’s third-quarter financials were in line with Wall Street expectations, CEO Meg Whitman hinted to analysts that there would likely be trouble in the personal computer business. The 52-week low is $17.41.

(NASDAQ: ROSG) has had a stellar week so far, and things are looking even better for what had been a battered microRNA-based molecular diagnostic test-maker. Dow Jones reported that a research firm called Aegis Capital has initiated coverage of Rosetta Genomics with a “Buy” rating. Here is where the real interest may get stoked: the research firm’s price target objective is set up at $16.00 per share, supposedly as one of the most overlooked names in the molecular diagnostic group.

Shares rose on Monday from about $4.00 to just over $5.00 by Tuesday and the closing bell on Wednesday was $4.73. It is also worth noting that Rosetta just raised $27.5 million in gross proceeds earlier this month when it sold 5.5 million shares at $5.00 per share to fund its operations and for other general corporate purposes.

The report today is significant even if we haven’t ever heard of Aegis Capital. The stock was battered and is way down from highs as the 52-week range is $1.40 to $26.70. If you use the analyst target compared to yesterday’s close of $4.73, then the firm is projecting upside of well over 200%. No wonder this is one of the leaderboard stocks so far with a 14% gain to $5.35 in active pre-market volume.

(NYSE: ALU), Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (AMEX: GDX), Patriot Coal Corporation (NYSE: PCX), Rosetta Genomics Ltd. (NASDAQ: ROSG), and School Specialty Inc. (NASDAQ: SCHS) as the most unusual movers today. We have shown each of these with the moves listed in the last hour of trading.

When was the last time anything good happened to Alcatel-Lucent, S.A. (NYSE: ALU)? It has been a while. With a contract win, with the highlights around its patents, and with the highlight around speedier web traffic, this one rose on a down day. In fact, Alcatel-Lucent was up 4.7% a $1.55 on the day with less than an hour until the closing bell.

Gold was down big earlier as investors are liquidating everything for a source of liquidity. So what are gold miners rising handily? Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (AMEX: GDX) is the go-to ETF for gold mining stocks and offers a great basket of the major global gold players. This ETF was up 3.6% at $44.10 against a 52-week range of $39.08 to $66.98. We just highlighted the value and huge upside that the components offer here.

Patriot Coal Corporation (NYSE: PCX) is in trouble and its viability is in question, Still, yesterday’s news of working with Blackstone trumped a credit rating downgrade today. The coal player was up 21% at $2.65 on more than 19 million shares as of the end of the day.

Rosetta Genomics Ltd. (NASDAQ: ROSG) has continued its post-reverse-split surge and this is up almost 400% from the start of last week. This is continued buying pressure after Medicare coverage came out. Even a small capital raise has been ignored. Shares are up another 37% at $10.23 and the post-split adjusted 52-week range is $1.40 to $36.45.

School Specialty Inc. (NASDAQ: SCHS) is surging simply on a debt refinancing. That is not your usual rally tool, but the move here is massive. Shares were up 23% at $3.00 in the last hour of trading and the 52-week range is $2.15 to $15.84.

(NASDAQ: ROSG) was an exponential winner on Wednesday due to getting a Medicare reimbursement ruling in its favor. The company had announced that the Medicare Administrative Contractor approved its miRview® mets² assay would be covered for all Medicare beneficiaries. MiRview® mets² is said to accurately identify the primary tumor in primary and metastatic cancer including Cancer of Unknown or Uncertain Primary. Great news, at least right up until the company used the exponential share gains to announce a capital raise.

Shares hit a high of $7.84 as the top-tick on Wednesday and that was against a close of $1.62 the day before. You have to keep in mind that things were so bad at Rosetta that the company completed a 1 for 15 reverse stock split to close at $2.10 on a split adjusted basis but shares had nominally been at $0.14 before that. So raising $2.2 million does not sound out of line on the surface, but the offering was a direct share offering of 632,057 ordinary shares at a price of $3.50 per share. That is a 30% discount, but it was after a gain of more than 200%.

Aegis Capital Corp. acted as the exclusive placement agent for the offering. Rosetta’s use of proceeds is primarily to fund its operations and for other general corporate purposes. These uses include debt repayment or refinancing, working capital, intellectual property protection and enforcement, capital spending, investments, acquisitions or collaborations, research and development and product development.

Shares are indicated down close to 20% at $4.05 in active trading on what is usually a thin volume stock. No good deed goes unpunished.

The three major US stock indexes opened higher this morning as investors appeared to be reacting to a temporarily stronger euro, which indicated some confidence in the Eurozone generally. But the dollar regained its lost ground by mid-morning and looks to be continuing a run of 12 straight stronger showings, something last seen more than a quarter century ago. US housing data was not encouraging either (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/05/16/april-housing-starts-kept-lower-by-northeast-west-regions/"title="April Housing Starts Kept Lower By Northeast & West Regions" >here). The US dollar index rose today, now up 0.14% at 81.336. The GSCI commodity index is up fractionally at 636.10, with commodities mostly higher today, defying the stronger dollar. Wheat was today’s big gainer. WTI crude oil closed down -1.2% at $92.81/barrel, it’s lowest close since November, and Brent crude trades down at -1.66% at $109.60/barrel. Gold settled down -1.3% today, at $1,536.60/ounce, the yellow metal’s lowest close since last July.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 33 points to 12,598.63 (-0.26%), the NASDAQ fell nearly 20 points (-0.68%) to 2,874.04, and the S&P 500 fell -0.44% or nearly 6 points to 1,324.81.

There were several <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/05/16/top-analyst-upgrades-downgrades-3/"title="Top Analyst Upgrades & Downgrades" >analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) raised to ‘overweight’ at Barclays; Patriot Coal Corp. (NYSE: PCX) cut to ‘market perform’ at FBR; Aetna Inc. (NYSE: AET) cut to ‘hold’ at Argus; Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI) cut to ‘neutral’ at JPMorgan; and SandRidge Energy Inc. (NYSE: SD) raised to ‘hold’ at Canaccord Genuity.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: 8×8 Inc. (NASDAQ: EGHT) is down -1.5% at $3.86; Chico’s FAS Inc. (NYSE: DE) is down -3.1% at $74.23 (more coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/05/16/farm-construction-machinery-remains-solid/"title="Farm, Construction Machinery Remains Solid" >here); Eagle Materials Inc. (NYSE: EXP) is down -5.2% at $33.13; LiveDeal Inc.
On Thursday we are scheduled to get earnings from Bon-Ton Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: BONT), Dollar Tree Inc. (NYSE: WMT).

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) is down -19.2% at $26.92. The retailer absolutely failed on quarterly results. More coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/05/15/j-c-penney-gets-murdered/"title="J.C. Penney Gets Murdered, Kills Dividend" >here.

Rosetta Genomics Ltd. (NASDAQ: ROSG) is up 263% at $5.88. The medical test making firm will have one of its tests covered by Medicare. There was also a 1-for-15 reverse stock split. More coverage <a href="http://247wallst.com/2012/05/16/rosetta-genomics-joins-exponential-explosion-club-on-medicare-coverage/"title="Rosetta Genomics Joins Exponential Explosion Club on Medicare Coverage" >here.

Abercrombie & Fitch Inc. (NYSE: ANF) is down -13.7% at $39.21 after posting a new 52-week low of $38.26 earlier today. The teen retailer badly missed estimates last night.
