Since the beginning of the year the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is up more than 13.5%. The run-up may be over for some chip makers and sustainable for others. Analysts are also a little behind in setting new price targets for the companies that have passed or are near previous target prices. Perhaps they’re just taking their time to see what happens with the earnings reports due this week.

We’ve looked 10 semiconductor companies and evaluated their chances of reaching existing price targets during the coming year. The companies are Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD), Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU), Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM), Qualcomm Corp. (NASDAQ: QCOM), ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH), SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK), Altera Corp. (NASDAQ: ALTR), Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT), and Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE: TXN). Data comes from Yahoo! Finance and MarketWatch.

Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) has a consensus price target of $27 and current price around $26.83, for a potential upside of about 1%. Intel reported stellar earnings last week and the stock posted a new 52-week high earlier this morning. Sales of PCs have not been as weak as feared, and margins have remained high. The new Ultrabooks, which the company is supporting with a very strong marketing budget, could really push the company substantially higher. As of this moment though, shares are fully valued.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) has a consensus price target of $6.00 and a current price around $6.55, leaving no upside. The company reports earnings tomorrow and is expected to post EPS of $0.16 on revenue of $1.72 billion. The company’s shares have jumped by about a dollar in the past month, and continued improvement, especially in the server market, should push the target price higher.

Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) has a consensus price target of $8.75 and a current price around $8.00, for a potential upside of 9%. Last month the company’s price target was $8/share and the shares were trading at around $6.25. How much more steam can be left in Micron after that?

Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) has a consensus price target of $41 and a current price around $34.92, for a potential upside of 17%. Broadcom shares have risen by more than $5/share in the last month, but unlike Micron, there’s still a lot of headroom.

Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) has a median price target of $67 and a current price around $58.60, for a potential upside of 14%. Qualcomm shares have gained more than 7% in the first three weeks of the year and the share price is up more than $4. The company has a firm position in the mobile device market and the company should continue to post growth in 2012.

ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH) has a consensus price target of $33.75 and a current price around $27.75, for a potential upside of more than 22%. ARM’s target price has jumped by nearly $7/share in the past month, but it is trading at nearly the same price as a month ago. Shares gained nearly 35% in the past year, but royalty payments are falling. For the year-to-date, shares are slightly down. To hit its new target, ARM has to get going.

SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK) has a consensus price target of $59.50 and a current price around $51.87, for a potential upside of 14.7%. SanDisk’s shares are up about 5.5% so far this year after a nearly flat 2011. Apple’s recent acquisition of of a NAND maker could sharply curtail SanDisk’s sales of the chips for iPhones and iPads.

Altera Corp. (NASDAQ: ALTR) has a consensus price target of $43 and a current price around $39.90, for a potential upside of 7.8%. Altera’s price target has been raised in the past month, and the company’s share price is also higher. Shares have risen more than 7% year-to-date, and the company is expected to report EPS of $0.42 and revenue of $447.52 million tomorrow.

Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT) has a median price target of $13 and a current price around $12.29, for a potential upside of 5.8%. AMAT’s shares have jumped more than 15% since the beginning of January, and the price target has not changed. There’s not a lot to like here as far as expected upside goes.

Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE: TXN) has a consensus target price of $34 and a current price around $33.42, for a potential upside of less than 2%. TI is expected to report EPS of $0.39 and revenue of $3.25 billion after the market closes today. The company lowered estimates in December, and there’s a decent chance TI will beat those lowered expectations. If so, a new target nearer the company’s 52-week high of $36.71 would be in order. That could raise upside potential to around 12%.

In the last month, Intel has essentially hit its target price, and because the target hasn’t been raised, there could be some question among analysts about the staying power of the recent rise. Broadcom and Qualcomm offer the best bets to post share price gains, and the targets for both are well within reach.

For the first time ever, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has released a list of its 156 suppliers in connection with the company’s release of its supplier responsibility audit. The supplier list is available here. According to the full report, these companies represent recipients of 97% of Apple’s supplier payments.

Many of Apple’s suppliers are well-known, but the list includes Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD), Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY), Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM), Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. (NYSE: FCS), Flextronics International Ltd. (NASDAQ: FLEX), Jabil Circuit Inc. (NYSE: JBL), Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH), TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. (NASDAQ: TQNT), SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK), ON Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: ONNN), and Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM).

The report is based on 229 audits, of which 14 were specialized environmental audits and 27 process safety audits. Apple found 6 current cases of suppliers hiring underage workers and 13 historical cases of child labor violations. About these violations, the company said:

In each case, the facility had insufficient controls to verify age or detect false documentation. We found no instances of intentional hiring of underage labor. We required the suppliers to support the young workers’ return to school and to improve their management systems—such as labor recruitment practices and age verification procedures—to prevent recurrences.

Chinese environmental groups last year charged that 27 of Apple’s suppliers were dumping toxic gases and heavy metal sludges into the country’s land and air. The company’s audits revealed that 112 supplier facilities were not properly storing, moving, or handling hazardous chemicals correctly; 69 facilities were illegally dumping or failing to recycle hazardous waste; and 52 facilities failed to label hazardous materials. Apple also reported that 58 facilities failed to monitor and control air emissions.

Apple had come under increasing pressure to name its suppliers and to hold them to a higher standard following suicide attempts by 18 workers and 14 deaths at China’s Foxconn facility in 2010.

This morning’s encouraging report on non-farm payrolls and a drop in the unemployment rate didn’t have much positive effect, but things would like have been worse without the job gains. Two speeches by Federal Reserve Bank presidents stressed that policymakers need to do more about raising employment, and the comments were couched in terms that might indicate that the Fed is looking at raising the inflation target. Crude oil prices are mixed, with WTI crude at down -0.25% at $101.56 and Brent crude up 0.34% at $113.12. Gold was up only slightly, closing at $1,617.70.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down nearly 56 points to 12,359.92 (-0.45%), the NASDAQ rose more than 4 points (0.16%) to 2,674.22, and the S&P 500 fell -0.25% or more than 3 points to 1,277.81.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) cut to ‘market perform’ at Wells Fargo; Apollo Group Inc. (NASDAQ: APOL) reiterated as ‘outperform’ and target price raised to $60 at Credit Suisse; Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE: KSS) cut to ‘hold’ at Argus; SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK) raised to ‘buy’ at Sterne Agee; and FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) started as ‘outperform’ at Wells Fargo.

Earnings reports of note since markets closed yesterday include: Commercial Metals Co. (NYSE: CMC) is up more than 4% at $15.01; Apollo Group is up about 5.5% at $56.68, after posting a new 52-week high of $57.09 earlier today; Imperial Sugar Co. (NASDAQ: IPSU) is down nearly -6% at $3.32; PriceSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PSMT) is down nearly -15% at $60.13; Greenbrier Cos. (NYSE: GBX) is up nearly 9% at $25.97; and Texas Industries Inc. (NYSE: TXI) is down more than -3% at $28.15.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Acadia Healthcare Co. Inc. (NASDAQ: ACHC) is up nearly 19% at $11.60 after posting a new 52-week high of $11.81 earlier today. The healthcare services company agreed to pay $91 million to acquire three additional facilities in Arizona, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is up nearly 12% at $7.16. The doughnut maker recently opened its 10,000th store and the stock was upgraded to ‘overweight’ at Stephens with a target price of $8.50.

RF Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD) is down more than -19% at $4.55 after posting a new 52-week low of $4.45 earlier today. The technology company warned that sales in the third fiscal quarter would be 10% lower than previously forecast.

EnerNOC Inc. (NASDAQ: ENOC) is down nearly -9% at $9.43. The energy services company’s revenues are threatened by a recent regulatory ruling.

Saba Software Inc. (NASDAQ: SABA) is up more than 15% at $8.54. The cloud software company lost less than expected in its most recent quarter and said that it would return to profitability in the second of the year.

Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV) is up more than 10% at $1.73. The homebuilder’s stock is probably reacting to the remarks by two Fed presidents supporting additional lending and homebuilding.

Stay tuned for Monday. Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart is giving a speech. Here are the noteworthy events on the schedule (all times Eastern):

11:30 a.m. – 3- and 6-month Treasury bill auctions

3:00 p.m. – Federal Reserve consumer credit report

Shares in semiconductor stocks have gained and lost value in about equal number during 2011. The run-up in share prices may be over for some and sustainable for others. For stocks that lost value during the year, gains in 2012 may be difficult to come by as the overall market for semiconductors has been getting softer as the new year gets closer.

We’ve looked 10 semiconductor companies and evaluated their chances of reaching existing price targets during the coming year. The companies are Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD), Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU), Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM), Qualcomm Corp. (NASDAQ: QCOM), ARM Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARMH), SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK), Altera Corp. (NASDAQ: ALTR), Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT), and Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE: TXN). Data comes from Yahoo! Finance and MarketWatch.

Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) has a consensus price target of $27 and current price around $24.47, for a potential upside of 10.3%. Intel has put a lot of marketing muscle behind its Ultrabook design, with more models to come from more manufacturers in 2012. A new version of the Windows operating system is also due in late summer that should help with Ultrabook sales. Intel still hasn’t come up with a strategy to attack the mobile device market, and while that won’t be fatal, it could weigh on revenue and profits next year unless the Ultrabook is a blowout success.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) has a consensus price target of $6.20 and a current price around $5.36, for a potential upside of 15.7%. AMD’s share price fell more than -33% in the past 12 months. The company introduced a new high-speed graphics chip recently that has been well-received. AMD’s server market share is wobbly though, although it has made progress in notebooks. But expecting a gain of more than 15% seems like wishful thinking.

Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) has a consensus price target of $8 and a current price around $6.24, for a potential upside of 28.2%. Micron’s shares jumped last week on a weak earnings report primarily on the basis of more expected consolidation in the DRAM market. Pricing has been weak for DRAM chips, but Micron is in a better position than most competitors to be among the survivors. Still, a lot of things need to go right for the company to hit its price target.

Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) has a consensus price target of $41 and a current price around $29.53, for a potential upside of 38.8%. Broadcom has posted strong revenue and profit growth in 2011, but its share price has fallen by about -32%. Revenue and profit are both expected to continue growing in 2012, and the company is not a bad bet to hit its current price target.

Each morning 24/7 Wall St. issues a list of some of the key analyst upgrades, downgrades, and initiations seen from Wall Street research firms. We review these and other calls from the week to see which stand out the most. Some are great calls that were greatly insightful. Other calls may be relevant well into the future. And then there are some calls which turned out to be total duds that were very painful for the analysts who made them and to the traders that listened.

After reviewing and filtering all of these research reports, we end up with the top analyst calls of the week. The top analyst calls of the week were in the following stocks: American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK); Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NYSE: NLY); ARM Holdings PLC (NASDAQ: ARMH); Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC); Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC); Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C); J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM); Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT); Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL); Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN); Diamond Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ: DMND); Human Genome Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: HGSI); OpenTable, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPEN); SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK); Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE: VLO); Vical Inc. (NASDAQ: VICL); and YRC Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: YRCW).

American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK) was down on Friday, but earlier in the week it was added to the #1 Strong Buy List at Zacks. Despite its performance and valuations, we still see this one as a favorable stock for most investment portfolios.

Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NYSE: NLY) saw shares slide this last week but we had an analyst duel. Wells Fargo raised Annaly to Outperform on Thursday, but Ladenburg Thalmann cut the rating to Neutral from Buy.

ARM Holdings PLC (NASDAQ: ARMH) was given a much better upside call against Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) by BMO Capital Markets mid-week, but this call goes against what the consensus analyst group is calling for. BMO raised ARM to Outperform and simultaneously downgraded Intel to Market Perform in the call.

Banking Sector Alert: On Tuesday afternoon came a bank sector downgrade by S&P Capital IQ, where Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC), Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C) and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) were both downgraded to “Hold” from “Buy.” On Wednesday morning Credit Suisse actually raised Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C) to “Outperform” and it gave a $48 price target.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) was one of the few infrastructure players given a positive call by a new round of research calls by Morgan Stanley this last Wednesday. The firm started Caterpillar with an “Overweight” in a call which was cautious among many infrastructure and farming equipment makers.

Markets opened lower this morning, and continued to fall before holding at around -150 points for most of the day on the DJIA. Japan’s yen sale pushed the dollar sharply higher and pushed down commodity prices, virtually all of which are priced in dollars. There might also have been some profit-taking, but Japan’s intervention in the currency market set the tone. The Chicago PMI index came in a bit lower than expected and had no visible impact on equity prices. Crude oil has recovered to be nearly flat, but gold is down about -1.3%, at $1,724/ounce in the last hour of trading. Silver, copper, platinum, and palladium are all down as well. The DJIA fell almost -50 points in the final half hour of trading. The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than -276 points to 11,955.70 (-2.25%), the NASDAQ fell more than -52 points (-1.93%) to 2,684.41, and the S&P 500 fell -2.48% or nearly -32 points to 1,253.29.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including the addition of Aetna, Inc. (NYSE: AET) to Goldman Sachs’ Conviction Buy list. Goldman also raised Amerigroup Corp. (NYSE: AGP) to ‘buy’. JB Hunt Transport Services Inc. (NASDAQ: JBHT) cut to ‘hold’ at Stifel Nicolaus; Sandisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK) cut to ‘neutral’ at Sterne Agee; Weyerhaeuser Corp. (NYSE: WY) raised to ‘hold’ at Deutsche Bank; Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) cut to ‘equal-weight’ at Global Equities Research; and Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) started at ‘neutral’ by JP Morgan. Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Shaw Group (NYSE: SHAW) up nearly 5.5%, at $23.39; Loews Corp. (NYSE: L) is down about -3%, at $40.07; Identive Group Inc. (NASDAQ: INVE) is down more than -6.5%, at $2.37; and Humana, Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is up more than 6.5%, at $85.68.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNTA) is up more than 22%, at $14.96. The shares jumped following a court ruling that will hamper the introduction of competing drugs.

NuPath Inc. (NASDAQ: PATH) is up more than 15%, at $2.68. The company reported positive results on tests of its patch treatment for migraine headaches.

NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: NPSP) is down more than 33%, at $5.18. The company said that two patients for its new bowel drug died and another developed cancer.

Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: YGE) is down more than -15%, at $4.06. This could well be caused by bit of profit-taking on solar stocks that posted sharp gains on Friday.

Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL), another solar maker, is also down about -14%, at $8.04. Just another day in the solar whirlwind.

Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ: GEVO) is down about -16%, at $7.31. The biofuel maker was refused a re-examination of a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Stay tuned for Tuesday. A two-day meeting of the Federal Reserve board of governors begins tomorrow. The first data on auto sales in October is expected tomorrow as well. We have noted the following events (all times Eastern):

10:00 a.m. — ISM Manufacturing index released
10:00 a.m. — US construction spending for September 2011

SanDisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) is still considered a value stock by many metrics, but we are concerned about this freshly announced share buyback plan. In fact, we wonder if after seeing insider sales hitting the tape if this may be the last hurrah for SanDisk at least until its shares take a breather.

After the close came word of a $500 million share buyback plan. There are some things to consider. If SanDisk was truly concerned about its share price or about the effects of insiders and employee stock options creating market selling pressure, maybe this announcement should have come in August when the stock was getting pounded and was down in the low-$30 handles.

After a 3.4% gain to $52.01 today, the current 52-week range is $32.24 to $53.61. A buyback will not hurt, but this should have been announced two months ago. The stock trades at just over 11-times expected 2011 earnings and almost 10.5-times 2012 earnings.

Here is more evidence of a missed timing opportunity: we called it as one of the giant technology stocks that was too cheap back on August 24 and we named it as one of twelve stocks that should outperform Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) as recently as October 12. Shares have risen by more than 60% from the August lows, they have risen by almost 50% from our date we said it was “too cheap” and by 17% from the “outperform Apple” date.

Why SanDisk thinks it needs to buy back stock now is beyond us. Maybe this is just an announcement for a rainy day, but we do not see the benefit. The $500 million is not even 5% of the $12.5 billion market cap.

Flash memory makers might not be going gangbusters on raw memory pricing power this fall, but the good news is that the price declines from earlier have abated and prices to have stabilized. A report on Monday from DRAMeXchange noted that demand did not warm for this year’s second-half peak season inventory replenishment until September.

The report showed that “renewed demand from both new smartphone and ultrabook models and preparation for the holiday season is likely to continue until early November.” As a result, NAND flash average contract price the first half of October witnessed both slight increases and decreases but should stay stable overall for the month of October “due to continued support from year-end restocking demand.” The report also showed that demand from certain system clients’ OEM orders was better than that from the memory card and UFD retail channel market.

On a longer-term basis, DRAMeXchange noted that the 2xnm-node process will become the mainstream process for NAND flash suppliers in the fourth quarter of 2011 with a portion of suppliers introducing new 2ynm-node products starting in November.

So far the news is not having much impact on shares around Flash (nor around DRAM) and these stocks look soft ahead of the opening bell. SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) is down just under 0.5% at $46.62 in the pre-market. Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) is down 0.4% at $5.68. No trading volume has been seen yet in shares of Integrated Silicon Solution Inc. (NASDAQ: ISSI) nor in Spansion Inc. (NYSE: CODE).
