We won’t bother telling you that Thursday was just a giant flush out in the market. Still, some stocks rise regardless of the market. We have identified several stocks which are up enough in the after-hours session tonight on earnings and other news that they look like shoe-in winners for Friday unless we see worse than a repeat of today. The stocks we see rising on news that should be among Friday’s winners are as follows: CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CF); Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR); Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: KOG); LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE: LNKD); priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ: PCLN); Spreadtrum Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD); and Web.com Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: WWWW)

CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CF) reported a key beat on its earnings expectations after the close as its profits literally tripled. The company also said it is not selling an operation to Mosaic and it is multiplying its dividend rate. CF shares closed down over 8% today and the stock is up about 6% at $150.00 in the after-hours session.

Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) is not your normal earnings gainer. Shares were down more than 9% today but the engineering and design firm exceeded earnings estimates with a 5% profit gain as backlog rose over 30%. Shares are indicated up 3.3% at $56.42 in the after-hours session against a 52-week trading range of $44.04 to $75.76.

Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: KOG) reported in-line earnings and it beat on revenues with $0.04 EPS and revenues rose some 260% to $22.1 million (above $700K higher than estimates). Shares are trading up 5.7% at $6.09 in the after-hours session against a 52-week range of $2.43 to $7.70.

LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE: LNKD) fell by over 9.5% today with the market, but the company now said it has over 120 million members as it posted not just a beat on earnings but positive earnings as sales more than doubled to $121 million. Shares are now indicated up over 4% at $99.00 in the after-hours.

priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ: PCLN) tanked by more than 7% ahead of earnings, but the online travel site is gaining back all of its losses and then some. The company beat earnings as revenues rose 44%. Bookings rose and even a trend of deceleration on growth did not upset William Shatner and friends. Shares are up over 9.5% at $531.25 in the after-hours.

Spreadtrum Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD) was hit by more than 7% but the results have it way up. Earnings were $0.10 above estimates at $0.65 EPS and revenue was up over 15% at $160.2 million vs. $155+ million expected. It also raised guidance to $172 to $178 million versus almost $166 million expected. Shares are up over 13% at $15.00 in the after-hours session.

Web.com Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: WWWW) had a solid day as one of the few great winners after it beat earnings and said it is making an accretive buyout of Network Solutions for some $560 million. Shares were up 19% today to $10.37 and the stock is up 7% at $11.13 in the after-hours session because the CEO is supposed to speak to Jim Cramer. Where this really ends up tonight is anyone’s guess, but this one is a winner from that deal.

It is possible that some of the gains will dry up if the panic continues. After all, the NASDAQ: was down over 100 points and the DJIA fell more than 500 points today. It happens, and we have the key unemployment non-farm payrolls data that could drive the markets even that much more in the morning.

Each morning we cover about fifteen top analyst calls for investors and traders to consider. Some calls offer great insight, and some are quite literally career-killing flops. At the end of the week we go back over the calls we covered and the ones we missed to highlight the “Top Analyst Calls of the Week.” This week wave ten top research calls that stood out from the pack in the following: Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU); Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU); Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C); Fortress Investment Group (NYSE: FIG); Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG); Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU); Renren Inc. (NYSE: RENN); Sears Holding Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD); Spreadtrum Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD); and Western Digital Corporation (NYSE: WDC).

We have outlined the analyst calls, shown an impact and added in color on each if applicable. As a bonus, we also covered a list of biotech buyout candidates from UBS and we covered the mega-IPO from London-listed Glencore as the commodity giant’s quiet period ended.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) was raised to Buy at UBS on Thursday, and the implied price target was raised to $6.61. The argument is that the selling from the peak in May has led to an oversold reading in the stock. This is still one of the best recovered networking and telecom equipment players out there for 2011.

Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU) may be a controversial call here. Sure China is slowing, but things are just picking back up for the stock and for some China players after getting beaten for weeks due to accounting fears in all aspects of China. S&P Equity Research downgraded the shares to “Hold” from “Buy” on Thursday during the afternoon. The stock paid no attention to the downgrade for all practical purposes.

Biotech and Emerging Pharma was given an interesting call from the analyst teams over at UBS. The research group came up with four biotech buyout targets this week.

Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C) was raised to Buy with a $53 target at BofA/Merrill Lynch this week and the macro-events must have been perfectly timed for this. What is interesting is that this must have been a self-serving upgrade around the huge mortgage settlement that was also given an extra boost from the debit card swipe-fee being lifted from $0.12 to $0.21 on average. We have always said this and still maintain it… “When analysts at investment banks upgrade their competitor shares, they may really be upgrading their own shares.”

Fortress Investment Group (NYSE: FIG) was given a big private equity valuation pop as being much better positioned than many private equity peers. Credit Suisse started analyst coverage with an “Outperform” and it gave it a $7.00 price target objective. What matters about that is the implication… it was calling for more than 50% upside in the units.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) made a huge score this week. Canaccord Genuity reiterated its “Buy” rating on Google, but it also came out maintained its Street-High $800 price target. That might be too aggressive for our own breaches, but that implied more than 60% upside. Shares were at $480 on Monday and up close to $520 on Friday. Not bad.

Another research report is actually out in support of Spreadtrum Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD). Yesterday came a report from short seller Muddy Waters questioning some accounting issues from back years on top of the recent weakness we have seen from anything in China. A denial of the problems, a declaration of a dividend, and a new positive research report are all driving shares higher today.

Spreadtrum said that the Muddy Waters concerns are baseless and the company also approved a quarterly cash dividend of US$0.05 per American Depositary Share or approximately US$0.0167 per Ordinary Share. It is worth noting that Jefferies just yesterday threw a BUY rating with a $19.25 price target on Spreadtrum.

Zacks noted today that Spreadtrum (SPRD) fit within its strong buy ratings with sales momentum… That criteria was based having the Zacks #1 Rank, a market capitalization above $500 million, consensus revenue estimates rising at least 1% for both 2011 and 2012, and a positive revenue surprise in the most recently reported quarter. Zacks’ research report can be found here but Zacks did note the possible inventory issues.

Spreadtrum is trading up 10.5% at $13.81 on more than 8 million shares and the 52-week trading range is $7.60 to $24.20.

If the analysts are right and if there are no inventory and/or accounting issues, then the consensus has Spreadtrum trading at less than 2-times sales and with a P/E ratio of well under 10…

Having positions and covering them openly on a near-live basis is a tricky business. At issue is not so much an insider trading question, but when financial transactions meet issues behind freedom of speech. Spreadtrum Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD) is the center of today’s debate. A short selling report has the stock down sharply today due to questions of its accounting. Yes, another Chinese accounting question.

We have previously opined that perhaps the only true freedom of speech in China may be by CFOs and other corporate officers who are allowed to say and publish whatever they want when it comes to balance sheets and revenues. We also admit that it is becoming more than difficult to trust anything Chinese when it comes to finances. Imagine when Hong Kong and Chinese regulators claim that some NYSE-listed and NASDAQ-listed companies actually do not meet all of the listing criteria for local regulation standards. The logic must be, “Why not send the shares to the dumb Americans? They buy everything else from us without concern over quality control.”

Today came a note from Muddy Waters noting, “Muddy Waters, LLC has begun researching Spreadtrum, Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: SPRD), and we have taken a short position in it. (Please see our disclaimer below.) We have identified a number of issues in SPRD’s filings, and we believe that there is a high risk of material misstatement in the reported financials. Our concerns are gravest regarding 2010 and 2011 numbers.” The company does give its disclaimer here.

For whatever it is worth, Jefferies initiated coverage on Spreadtrum with a Buy rating and a $19.25 target.

The group (Muddy Waters) sent a 7-page letter to the Spreadtrum’s Chairman. Some may ask if it is legal or moral to be shorting stock, sending letters to management, and making it public domain. Again, this is likely a freedom of speech issue and how it ties into financial transactions. As long as nothing is knowingly wrong that is brought up and as long as the firm is open and truthful about their position, technically there are no formal violations.

In one way of thinking about this, it is almost reverse activism. Activist investors like Bill Ackman and Carl Icahn have used the media to support their rationale. Why can’t short sellers?

There is one issue to consider though. A short seller is far from being Warren Buffett. Still, let’s take this to an extreme. What if Warren Buffett gave a letter to management or what if he issued data that could be accessed by the public in nearly real-time each time he bought new shares or even more shares in a public company? His current positions have a 45-day lag and it can still influence buying and selling behavior in shares.

Other recent Muddy Waters targets have been Sino-Forest Corporation, Duoyuan Global Water Inc., China MediaExpress Holdings, and RINO International Corp.

Spreadtrum shares are down 5% at $12.26 on over 30 million shares, but shares were down as much as under $10.00 today. The 52-week trading range is $7.60 to $24.20.

Keep in mind that the short interest has already skyrocketed due to its “China Syndrome.” The short interest was 5,077,716 shares as of June 15 settlement date, up almost 80% from the 2,823,301 shares in the May 31 settlement date’s short interest. Whether you chase buying dips or whether you chase short sellers, always remember the golden rule for all investors: “Understand what you are investing in!”

As a final reminder, whether you trade these from the long-side or short-side… If these stocks get halted until more data can be submitted it doesn’t matter if you are long or short in the sense that your capital will be tied up either way.
