A Solar Win in California, Sort Of (STP, FSLR, SPWRA, PCG, EIX, SRE)

Solar Roof ImageThe solar sector appears to be lightly benefiting from California legislation efforts that would secure above market rates as a feed-in tariff for small solar power generators.  California already has mandates calling for larger utilities to generate more power from alternative energy sources (as much as one-third by 2020).  The state already offers relatively high utility rates and solar subsidies and this will take what already one of the top solar markets to somewhat of a German model.

There is a larger effort at the California Public Utilities Commission, or CPUC, that may benefit larger players like Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), and SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWRA).  The discrepancy comes in over which companies will or will not benefit from the move if a smaller benefit comes into play or if it is the larger benefit.

Trina Solar Extends Contract; Suntech Completes Utility-Scale Solar Plant; LDK Solar Loses Ground (TSL, STP, LDK)

biotech

Chinese solar PV maker Trina Solar Ltd. (TSL) has announced a five-year contract extension with another Chinese company that produces polysilicon and solar wafers. Trina plans to use the materials to produce about 8,500 megawatts of solar modules over the next 13 years.

The original contract began in April 2008 and was to run for eight years. This extension does not change any terms of that contract; it adds five years beginning in 2016 at already agreed-upon volumes and prices, though a price adjustment is possible based on market prices. Read More »

A Solar Field Larger Than Manhattan

chinaFirst Solar (FSLR) today announced that it had signed a contract with the Chinese government that will allow it to build a 2 gigawatt solar power plant in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, China. The closing of the deal is contingent on execution of definitive agreements.

The new solar field would be the largest in the world, by far. Once it is completed, the installation will cover 25 square miles, larger than the island of Manhattan. It will be able to supply power to three million homes and will be completed in four phases. Read More »

Top Day Trader Alerts (PETM, GOOG, STP, NTAP, SHLD, EDAP)

These are this Tuesday’s top day trader and active stock alerts.  We have more detailed data on volume and price analysis with links through to VSInvestor.com on each stock:

PetSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM) was dropping worse than last night and down almost 12% after beating earnings but giving weak guidance.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is trading up close to 2% after a Goldman Sachs upgrade this morning.

Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) was down but then traded up marginally despite a huge earnings drop and a weaker than prior target Megawatt shipment goal.

NetApp, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) is one of the more active issues and down close to 5% after beating earnings.  Guidance was not very committed and its CEO being replaced sent shares scrambling.

Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD) is down over 10% as Wall Street does not want to see any more losses from Lampert and friends.

EDAP TMS SA (NASDAQ: EDAP) was an exponential runner late yesterday and is up another 20% this morning on what is already exponential volume.

SunPower Surprise Leads Solar Shares Higher (SPWRA, FSLR, STP, ENER)

Solar Panel PicSunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWRA) has managed to do what many were not expecting.  It blew the doors off of estimates.  Non-GAAP operating income for the quarter was $26.8 million, or $0.24 EPS.  Its revenues came in at $298 million, up from $214 million in Q1 but down from $383 million a year ago.  We had estimates pegged from Thomson Reuters at $0.14 EPS and $263.25 million in revenues.  It is also giving some solid guidance.  This is going to give a good hard boost for other larger solar players like First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (STP), and Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER)

Solar Subsidy Realities Sink In (LDK, STP, TSL, CSUN, JASO)

Solar Panel PicThe excitement in solar shares yesterday is already being met by selling and quick profit taking this morning.  Yesterday’s news of the China subsidy that may bring in another 500-MW over the next two years or more may have more bark than bite.  Of course this is far from bad news.  But major players from China are giving back the gains as the realities of the news set in.  LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL), China Sunergy Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: CSUN), and JA Solar Holdings, Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) are mostly lower.

Will China Subsidies Save Solar Stocks? (LDK, STP, TSL, CSUN, JASO, FSLR, WFR, SPWRA, ENER, SOLR, CSIQ)

Solar Panel PicIf you saw how solar power stocks ran up today, you might think it was tied to higher energy prices from last week.  But the news that that ran shares is that the Chinese government plans to offer what appears to be some rather high subsidies for solar projects.  Due to the sizes and location of the Chinese companies and the desire for China to help Chinese companies, it seems that LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL), China Sunergy Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: CSUN), and JA Solar Holdings, Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) would be the largest beneficiaries.   Today is proof that many others can win outside of earnings news during earnings season.

Solar Daily Winners (CSIQ, SOL, STP)

Solar Panel PicWe are seeing some positive reactions this afternoon in some of the solar stocks on an individual basis, despite energy prices not offering much of an added boost to the sector.  Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) is up on an upgrade.  ReneSola Ltd. (NYSE: SOL) is up on pact awards in China, and Suntech Power Holdings Co. (NYSE: STP) is up on a faster-delivery partnership.  More details are below.

When Solar Leaders Fall More Than Oil Giants… On Oil (FSLR, STP, SPWRA, TAN, XOM, SLB, OIH)

Solar Panel PicOil Well ImageSolar stocks are again trading no differently than a leveraged bet on oil prices.  This is something we have noted on many occasions and with oil down by another -$2.59 at $64.14 per barrel in NYMEX WTI, that is looking to be the case again.  An analyst call on First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) is not helping, and these two outside issues are bringing down Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) and SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWRA).

Even the Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) is getting hit.   Where this gets interesting is that oil giants Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) on the integrated side is down only 1.6% and Schlumberger Limited (NYSE: SLB) on the services side is down less than 3% at $51.00.

Solar Players Looking Again Like Leveraged Oil Trades (FSLR, STP, SPWRA, LDK, ENER, TAN, PBW, CSIQ)

Solar Panel PicOffshore Rig PicInvesting in solar and alternative energy stocks comes with many risks.  We have often referred to many of these companies as being essentially nothing more than very leveraged speculative oil investments because when energy prices are low most forms of alternative energy are not competitive on a cost structure.  The drop of $2.62 per barrel to $66.93 in NYMEX WTI Crude is causing havoc in some of the mid-cap and speculative oils stocks.  It is also hitting shares of First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWRA), LDK Solar Co.Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), and Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER).  This is also seen directly in the ETFs of Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) and PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (NYSE: PBW).  Speculative stocks like Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) look even worse.

Short Sellers Confused in Alternative Energy Bets (CSIQ, CPST, CLNE, ENER, ESLR, FSLR, FCEL, SOLR, JASO, LDK, SFUN, SPWRA, STP)

Solar Panel PicWe have seen the new short interest data out of the NASDAQ and NYSE for the end of May reports.  There are many mixed bets in the alternative energy sector.  While some of these are large bets on the surface, overall there was a very small change in the latest short interest data compared to months past.

COMPANY NAME (TICKER)……….. MAY 29… Change from May 15
Canadian Solar Inc. (CSIQ)…………2,549,840   -4.3%
Capstone Turbine Corp. (CPST)…… 17,568,058   +5.8%
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (CLNE)….3,919,108   -0.1%
Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) 12,649,722  +3.7%
Evergreen Solar, Inc. (ESLR)………. 20,225,435  +0.5%
First Solar, Inc. (FSLR)………………  6,995,776    -2.4%
FuelCell Energy, Inc. (FCEL)………. 5,861,532   +1.7%
GT Solar International (SOLR)……. 5,558,018   -9.7%
JA Solar Holdings, Co. (JASO)……. 6,652,651   +10.4%
LDK Solar Co. Inc. (LDK)……………  13,719,877   +4.1%
Solarfun Power Holdings Co. (SFUN)  1,337,324 -7.1%
SunPower Corp. (SPWRA)……………. 13,885,421   +9.7%
Suntech Power Holdings Co. (STP)… 10,706,960  +8.1%

Usually you see a clear trend or direction in the alternative energy sector.  That does not appear to be the case.  As oil has risen steadily, the downside of betting against these may be to steep and managers telling their clients they bet against the rally after all the pain seen already is probably more than a tough sell.

News Escalates Technical Event in Solar Stocks (FCEL, STP, ESLR, SPWRA, YGE, TAN, FSLR)

Solar Panel PicWe recently have noticed how more and more solar companies are seeing big gains on news, particularly in those which have recently raised cash in a seondary offering.  We are starting to see further chart and technical events in FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: FCEL), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), Evergreen Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: ESLR), SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWRA), and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: YGE) as the 200-day or 50-day moving averages are now in the rear-view mirror. Where this gets interesting is that the solar ETF, Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN), has crossed above its 200-day moving average in recent days as shares are at $10.93 and that 200-day moving average is $10.15.

Suntech Power Raising Cash After Earnings (STP)

Solar Panel PicSuntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) is seeing shares take a hit this morning after the solar player filed to raise capital afterissuing earnings.  The company’s profit slid to $1.8 million, or only $0.01 EPS.  That is down from $46 million and $0.27 year-over-year.  The good news is that Thomson Reuters was looking for a consensus estimates of almost -$0.06 EPS.  Revenue was down more than 25% to $315.7 million compared to analyst expectations of about $350 million.
