The three major US stock indexes opened higher this morning, following on a positive debt sale by Portugal and some improvement in PMI numbers from Europe. ADP employment data did not meet expectations, but did not pull stocks down. ISM data fell a bit short of expectations, but construction spending rose sharply. In Asia, China posted mixed PMI reports and the country’s data on new loans was lower than expected. US oil and gasoline inventories rose more than expected, put a crimp in energy prices that had started our higher for the day (more coverage here). WTI crude finished the day down -0.9% at $97.61/barrel, its lowest level in six weeks. Brent crude rose 0.71% to $111.77/barrel. Gold closed up 0.41% at $1,747.60.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 83 points to 12,716.31 (0.66%), the NASDAQ rose more than 34 points (1.22%) to 2,848.27, and the S&P 500 rose 0.89% or nearly 12 points to 1,324.08.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) raised to ‘outperform’ at Wells Fargo; Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) cut to ‘hold’ at Stifel Nicolaus; Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX) raised to ‘buy’ at Stifel Nicolaus; Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) cut to ‘hold’ at Argus (see our coverage here); and Monster Worldwide Inc. (NYSE: MWW) cut to ‘perform at Oppenheimer. Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) had three ratings changes today: maintained as ‘neutral’ with target price cut to $190 at Credit Suisse; maintained ‘outperform’ but estimates cut at Baird; and target price lowered to $225 at Jefferies.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Amazon.com is down -8.2% at $178.51; Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) is up 8.24% at $37.18; Aetna Inc. (NYSE: AET) is up 3.3% at $45.13; Corinthian Colleges Inc. (NASDAQ: COCO) is up nearly 34% at $4.05; Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD) is up 3.8% at $50.13, after posting a new 52-week high of $50.35 earlier today; Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN) is up nearly 14% at $45.70; Marathon Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: MPC) is up nearly 10% at $41.98; Northrup Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC) is up 2.22% at $59.34; and Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE: WHR) is up 14% at $61.93.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Key Tronic Corp. (NASDAQ: KTCC) is up nearly 37% at $8.53, after posting a new 52-week high of $8.74 earlier today. The computer peripherals maker posted better-than-expected earnings and revenues after markets closed last night.

Sangamo BioSciences Inc. (NASDAQ: SGMO) is up more than 21% at $4.19. The pharmaceutical maker has announced a collaboration with Shire plc (NASDAQ: SHPGY) to develop a hemophilia treatment.

Medivation Inc. (NASDAQ: MDVN) is up more than 21% at $67.26, after posting a new 52-week high of $70.87 earlier today. The development stage drug maker has reported highly positive results on a test of its late-stage prostate cancer treatment. We have more coverage here.

JDA Software Group Inc. (NASDAQ: JDAS) is down more than -17% at $24.39. The software maker issued a fairly weak quarterly report and continuing investor wariness remains over an SEC investigation of the company’s accounting practices.

IXYS Corp. (NASDAQ: IXYS) is down more than 14% at $11.76. The integrated circuit maker posted poor quarterly numbers after markets closed last night.

Stay tuned for Thursday. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke is speaking at 10:00 a.m. and Dallas Fed president Richard Fisher is speaking in the evening. We have noted the following events on the schedule (all times Eastern):

(NASDAQ: AMZN); ARM Holding PLC (NASDAQ: ARMH); Biogen Idec Inc. (NASDAQ: BIIB); Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM); Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM); Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE); Seagate Tech Inc. (NASDAQ: STX); United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS); United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X); and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE: VLO).

We have provided estimates from Thomson Reuters on each and offered commentary and guidance on some of these companies. More detailed previews will be available Tuesday morning for the reports due after the closing bell. The current previews are below:

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) has seen shares back off of highs and the stock is down more than 20% from its year high and all-time high. The estimates are $0.19 EPS and $18.2 billion. The Kindle will be a huge focus, but the concern is that the company has been allowing its margins to get crushed far to much for far too long.

ARM Hldgs PLC (NASDAQ: ARMH) is key now that it powering so many smartphones, finally living up to its ambitions of the last decade. As a reminder, these earnings are translated from British Pounds, and estimates are $0.14 EPS and $193.3 million in revenues.

Biogen Idec Inc. (NASDAQ: BIIB) is effectively the second largest pure biotech company and it finally outperformed in 2011. Estimates are $1.49 EPS and $1.29 billion in sales. The new screening test to determine if MS patients using TYSABRI are at risk of developing PML has been undercovered by our take.

Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) was recently given a huge and successful pop after a Jim Cramer tout. Estimates are $0.65 EPS and $1.8 billion in sales.

Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) has a relatively low bar set after Chevron’s earnings stank up the place last week. Thomson Reuters has estimates for the DJIA component of $1.95 EPS and $119.7 billion in sales. Keep in mind that revenues are not as widely covered as earnings per share. Estimates have ticked down by $0.03 in just the last few days.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) is going to show just what happens to earnings with Lipitor now being off-patent. Pfizer has estimates out there of $0.47 EPS and $16.61 billion in revenues.

Seagate Tech Inc. (NASDAQ: STX) has already risen off of guidance but the Thai flooding and PC flux right now create ongoing wild cards. The disk drive maker is expected to post earnings of $1.07 EPS and $3.14 billion in revenues.

United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS) is expected to report earnings of $1.26 EPS on sales of $14.45 billion. We will be looking for additional information on past price hikes in the new climate.

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) recently announced that its production in Slovakia was returning to a 5-day week from a 4-day week due to demand and after labor agreement negotiations. The estimates are a large loss at -$0.84 EPS on $4.73 billion in sales. While it has bounced, U.S. Steel is still down by half from a year ago.

Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE: VLO) is holding up better than we would have guessed if you have watched refining margins of late. Estimates are for a loss at -$0.17 EPS on $32.3 billion in sales.

The company shipped approximately 47 million disk drives and sees revenues at $3.1 to $3.2 billion and expects gross margin as a percent of revenue to be at least 30.5% before the impact of the Samsung HDD acquisition charges. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $2.81 billion for the quarter.

For the next quarter, Seagate sees revenue of $4.2 to $4.5 billion and sees gross margin as a percent of revenue of at least 33%. Thomson Reuters has estimates of $3.62 billion for the quarter.

Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the December quarter came to more than $2.1 billion that was “inclusive of substantial outflows of approximately $1.2 billion during the quarter for matured debt and cash consideration for the Samsung transaction.”

Seagate shares rose 2.4% today and shares are up another 7.5% at $18.09 against a 52-week range of $9.05 to $18.60. Western Digital Corporation (NYSE: WDC) closed up 1% at $31.30 today and the shares are indicated up around $32.20 in the after-hours session.

This last weekend brought the first waves of picks for 2012. Barron’s issued its “10 Favorite Stocks For 2012″ and the stocks were just about all lower on Monday with a very weak stock market. The common investment themes for a 2012 list were healthy dividends and low price/earnings ratios.

Barron’s listed Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A), Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA), Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE: FCX), Metlife, Inc. (NYSE: MET), and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG). The list also includes some ADRs via Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX), Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS.A), Vodafone Group PLC (NYSE: VOD), Sanofi (NYSE: SNY), and Daimler (DDAIF).

The aim was companies with low P/E ratios, somewhat high dividends, and companies with an expected upside of potentially 15% to 20%. This won’t excite many investors. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) was not in the list nor was Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG). Neither pays a dividend, but both have relatively low P/E ratios considering the recent growth (14 for Apple and about 17 for Google). If you use the Thomson Reuters consensus analyst price target, Apple has 29% upside and Google has 16% upside.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) is interesting now that it has added International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE: IBM) and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) to its portfolio. IBM yields a low 1.5% today and is buying back stock despite trading at all-times highs. The company’s goal is $20.00 in earnings per share by 2015. Intel just warned about a large revenue shortfall but its dividend yield is now about 3.5%.

Comcast Corporation (NYSE: CMCSA) is actually still interesting because of its growth and value and because it is changing its mix to include content. The 2% yield is one which has room for further dividend growth and the cable giant’s share price actually offers almost 30% to the Thomson Reuters consensus price target.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE: FCX) and Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX) are both very opportunistic calls. Hard disk drive troubles around the globe, a prior discount to highs, and a dividend north of 4% helped Seagate. Freeport-McMorRan is an opportunistic call now that global growth has brought down shares of metals companies drastically. It has a 2.5% yield, which is not bad for a metals company, and at $39.00 the Thomson Reuters consensus price target is actually 30% higher than the current share price.

Perhaps the ADRs and European plays of Daimler (DDAIF), Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS.A), Sanofi (NYSE: SNY) and Vodafone Group PLC (NYSE: VOD) are opportunistic around the weakness of Europe today. After all, if the Euro Zone continues its downward trajectory and with the Euro currency at an 11-month low it would seem that the article could blame a worsening effect if these positions do not work out.

24/7 Wall St. has recently announced a couple of key lists with predictions and expected upside. Our DJIA Stocks Soon To Raise Dividends has already seen some come to fruition even sooner than expected, and we have released to our free email subscribers the 24/7 Wall St. 2012 Model Dividend Portfolio.

Disk drive maker Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) said yesterday that production at one of its plants in Thailand has begun one week ahead of schedule. This development could spell bad news for competitor Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX) and good news for PC and server makers like Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) and Dell, Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) as well as Asian PC manufacturers Lenovo, Acer, and others. Or maybe not.

The quicker-than-expected re-start doesn’t really do much to change the landscape though. In its release, Western Digital had this to say about industry conditions going forward:

The company believes that hard drive industry shipments in the December quarter will be limited to approximately 120 million units due to production and supply constraints related to the historic flooding in Thailand. This includes units that were in inventory at the beginning of the quarter. The company believes that demand for the December quarter is in the range of 170 million to 180 million units. The company believes that significant industry supply constraints will continue in the March quarter and beyond.

In an interview with All Things Digital last week, Seagate CEO Steve Luczo provided an essentially identical forecast for a return to normalcy in the production of disk drives. The problem, as he sees it, lies in the mix of drives that will be available. According to Luczo,

companies like Western Digital, who don’t have access to the sliders [a critical component in a drive], are shipping one- and two-headed devices so they can ship more units. So instead of shipping a drive that contains two disks and four heads, which is what the market needs right now, they’ll be shipping a one-disk, one-head or one-d[i]sk, two-head product. They’ll be maximizing the units they can sell, rather than shipping the product the customer actually needs.

The customers he is referring to, of course, are the PC makers. Luczo said that drive prices to computer manufacturers would likely rise 20% and that prices to resellers would rise even higher. For HP and Dell, that means either that they raise prices on their products or that they eat the loss.

The 50-60 million unit shortfall in the December quarter will be filled in over the course of 2012, but even when full production returns, Luczo estimates that about 100 million drives will have been lost. Not every one of those drives would have been shipped in a new PC or server, but around 60-70 million would have. That’s a huge hit to the computer makers.

Western Digital’s shares are up about 11% this morning, at $32.49, in a 52-week range of $22.64-$41.87. Seagate’s shares are off about -1%, at $17.22, in a 52-week range of $9.05-$18.60.

Equity markets opened slightly lower this morning, following yesterday’s big share price increases. For most of the day stocks traded slightly lower, although they have moved to a very slight gain in the final hour of trading. China’s purchasing managers index was weaker than expected, which is probably the reason for the slow start this morning, and then new US unemployment claims were higher than expected adding more pressure on prices. The dollar has traded weaker relative to the euro, but strengthened against the yen. Crude oil is trading down marginally at $100.18/barrel and gold is also down slightly at $1,743.870/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 25 points to 12,020.48 (-0.21%), the NASDAQ rose nearly 6 points (0.22%) to 2,626.20, and the S&P 500 fell -0.19% or more than 2 points to 1,244.58.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) raised to ‘buy’ at Citigroup. Other ratings action included IAMGOLD Corp. (NYSE: IAG) started as ‘outperform’ with a $25 price target at Credit Suisse; Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) raised from ‘neutral’ to ‘buy’ at Citigroup; Seagate Technology PLC (NYSE: STX) raised to ‘buy’ at Argus; Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ONXX) cut from ‘buy’ to ‘neutral’ at BofA/Merrill Lynch; and Carrizo Oil & Gas (NASDAQ: CRZO) reiterated ‘buy’ with a new price target of $49 at Canaccord Genuity.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Gildan Activewear Inc. (NYSE: GIL) is down -30.8% at $16.53, after setting a new 52-week low of $16.52; Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS) is down -16.9% at $14.50; Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU) is down -4.8% at $47.34; Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISLE) is down -8.5% at $4.51; The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) is up 1% at $23.41; and The Talbot’s Inc. (NYSE: TLB) is down -17.1% at $1.65, after posting a new 52-week low of $1.63. We have more details on Lululemon’s earnings and on the November sales reports from a number of retailers, including Talbot’s.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Pacific Ethanol Inc. (NASDAQ: PEIX) is up 26.7% at $1.33. The ethanol maker has regained compliance with Nasdaq listing requirements and has increased ownership of its four ethanol production plants to 27%.

Magma Design Automation Inc. (NASDAQ: LAVA) is up more than 25% at $7.16. The design automation firm has agreed to be acquired by Synopsys Inc. (NASDAQ: SNPS) for $7.35/share.

Clearwire Corp. (NASDAQ: CLWR) is up more than 17% at $2.09. The wireless broadband provider received a $1.6 billion investment from its majority owner Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) that will enable Clearwire to meet its $237 million debt payment. We have more details here.

Scorpio Tankers Inc. (NYSE: STNG) are down more than -20% at $5.31. The Monaco-based petroleum shipping company priced a secondary offering this morning at $5.50/share.

Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NASDAQ: HOVNP) is down more than -14% at $1.31. The homebuilder has been batted around for nearly a year now, and even improving news on construction spending can’t stop the slide.

Stay tuned for Friday. We have noted speeches due from Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard Fisher, Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser, and Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren. Here’s another noteworthy event scheduled for tomorrow (all times Eastern):

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) has been doing what it can to move from being so PC-dependent, but this is a long slow process. Canaccord Genuity has a note out this morning and it is not the “reiterated Hold rating with a $24 target” that investors need to pay attention to. The risks brought up are around a possible inventory correction.

Canaccord’s Booby Burleson noted in a report, “We see risk of inventory correction for Intel in the first quarter. Recent checks indicate Intel’s customers are experiencing CPU inventory growth in Q4 as a result of hard disk drive shortages.” The report noted that Tier-2 customer inventories appear to be growing the most and have grown to “around six to seven weeks” versus a normal count four weeks. At the top, the Tier-1 customers are also noted as seeing inventories grow to about 1.5 weeks above normal.

The blame is being put on hard disk drive shortages at a time of increasing uncertainty about overall PC demand. The Thailand floods are the biggest single contributor here as has been noticed out of Western Digital Corporation (NYSE: WDC). Western Digital’s woes have actually gone on to help rival Seagate Technology PLC (NYSE: STX) in its most recent guidance.

A week ago came an upgrade of Western Digital to ‘Overweight’ by Barclays, but the problems from October brought on prior analyst downgrades from Needham, J.P. Morgan, S&P, and others.

The Canaccord Genuity research this morning is also about a week after Raymond James downgraded Intel to “Market Perform” based upon upside limits on unit sales.

Pointing out one research report of caution does at least need to be considered as overlooked and potentially discounted entirely when shares are up 4.9% at $24.74 due to global stock strength. Thomson Reuters has a consensus price target of $26.65 for the stock and the 52-week trading range is $19.16 to $25.50.
