In a bit of good news this morning for Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK), the Deutsche Bank analyst who downgraded Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC), Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN), and Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) maintained Chesapeake as one of four energy companies it still rates as a ‘buy’. As a little thank-you, Chesapeake announced its fourth-quarter dividend this morning.

Energy Company Downgrades Hit E&P Companies (RRC, SWN, DVN)

Oil_well_imageBurning_money_pic_3News from the energy patch just keeps getting worse. Global consumption is down, consumer prices are down, and just about every company is reducing spending on exploration and production. This morning a Deutsche Bank analyst rubbed a little more salt into the wounds, cutting Range Resources Corp. (NYSE:RRC), Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE:SWN), and Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN).  These were formal ratings downgrades where the companies were cut from ‘buy’ to ‘hold’.

New Major Gas Pipeline From Fayetteville Heads North (KMP, ETP, SWN, CHK, BP)

Oil_gas_pipeline_picKinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE:KMP) and Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE:ETP) are teaming up again, this time on a joint venture to move up to 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day from the Fayetteville Shale to the upper Midwest. The two companies announced the formation of the Fayetteville Express Pipeline LLC (FEP), a 50/50 venture that will carry natural gas 187 miles from Conway county, Arkansas, to an interconnection to the Trunkline Gas Company pipeline that goes north to Chicago and on into Michigan. The projected cost for the FEP is $1.3 billion, and the pipeline is expected to be in service by late 2010 or early 2011.

Oil & Gas Upgrades & Downgrades on Wall Street (HES, SUN, TSO, MRO, VLO, BRY, SWN)

We’ve seen several analyst calls on Wall Street this morning out of the oil patch, and here are some of the key calls:

  • Hess (NYSE: HES), Sunoco (NYSE: SUN), and Tesoro (NYSE: TSO) were all started as "HOLD" ratings at Citigroup.
  • Marathon Oil (NYSE: MRO) and Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO) were started with "BUY" ratings at Citigroup.
  • Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY) was started as Outperform at Morgan Keegan.
  • SW Energy (NYSE: SWN) was downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at FBR.
