In mid-October, we took a look at target prices and implied gains among 11 metals and materials stocks. The companies we examined were United States Steel Corp. (NYSE: X), Nucor Corp. (NYSE: NUE), Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD), Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM), Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX), Silver Wheaton Corp. (NYSE: SLW), Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE: FCX), Southern Copper Corp. (NYSE: SCCO), Titanium Metals Corp. (NYSE: TIE), Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA), and Molycorp, Inc. (NYSE: MCP).

Gold prices have gained about $60/ounce, about 3.6%. Silver prices are up roughly 9%. Copper prices are up by about 8.6%. Titanium prices are unchanged, steel prices have been drifting though more varieties appear to be selling at lower prices, and rare earth minerals vary widely depending on the particular mineral. Lanthanum oxides are selling for about $61/kilogram, while terbium oxide goes for $605/kilogram.

All stock data comes from Yahoo! Finance and current prices were gathered in the early afternoon today.

Of the companies we survey, all but one enjoys a higher stock price today than they did last month. The single exception is Molycorp, which is getting punished today for missing both EPS and revenue estimates. At yesterday’s closing price of $38.70, Molycorp’s share price was higher than it was a month ago.

More interesting, perhaps, were recent changes in median price targets. Only Nucor and Titanium’s price targets have remained the same in the last month. Two stocks, Newmont and Barrick, had their price targets raised and the other seven had price targets lowered.

Newmont’s target price was raised from $77 to $81. At the new target price and a current price of $70.41, Newmont’s implied gain is $10.59, or 15%. The stock put up a new 52-week high last week, and its forward P/E also rose from 10.2 to 11.47. In the past month, shares have gained more than $7, or 11%. The company’s pledge to raise dividends if gold price targets are met is another reason to look carefully at this stock.

Barrick’s target price was raised from $66.50 to $68. At the new target price and a current price of $52.61, Barrick’s implied gain is $15.39, or 29%. Shares are trading at less than 6% away from the 52-week high of $55.95. Over the past month, Barrick’s shares have gained 12%.

The largest drop in target price was settled on Molycorp, which saw its target price fall from $80- to $70. Even at that, the implied gain for the shares, based on today’s price of $34.04, is 106%. The wide gap is due not so much to any failure on Molycorp’s part but to what might be “irrational exuberance” for the stock by investors. There is also the fact that Molycorp’s mineral reserves tend to be heavy on the lower-priced rare earths and light on the higher-priced metals.

The largest percentage drop in target price was claimed by US Steel, which saw its target price fall from $40 to $34.50, nearly 14%. The company posted a new 52-week low on October 3rd. At the current price of $26.08, the implied gain is $8.42, or 32%. US Steel is widely expected to be acquired — and fairly soon — which is attracting short sellers in droves.

Freeport-McMoran’s target price fell from $55 to $53 in the past month, even though shares have added $5.05, or about 15%, in the same period. The implied gain based on the new target price and the current price of $39.83 is 33%. Freeport’s problem is that demand for copper might be stagnating or worse, given the construction slowdown in China.

Silver Wheaton’s target price fell from $51.50 to $49.50, while the share price has gained 17%. At the new target price and based on today’s price of $36.18, the implied gain here is 37%. There is plenty of headroom for Silver Wheaton’s share price to continue rising, but demand for silver will be the driver.

Alcoa’s target price dropped from $15.50 to $13 in the last month, even as the share price has risen by about 8%. At the new target price and based on the current price of $10.58, the implied gain in Alcoa stock is nearly 23%. Given that shares rose by 8% in the last month, anything’s possible, even that Alcoa may hit the lower target.

The target price for Steel Dynamics fell from $18 to $16, while share prices gained a substantial 23% in the same period. At the new target price and a current price of $13.51, the implied gain in the stock is 18%. EPS estimates for the current quarter have fallen by nearly -20% in the past month, following lowered guidance from the company.

Southern Copper’s target price fell from from $36.75 to $36.25 in the past month, even though the share price rose by 21%. At the new target and at the current price of $32.41, the implied gain for Southern Copper is nearly 12%.

We have looked at several steel makers and a number of precious and base metal miners, plus one rare earth minerals producers to help determine if expected upside gains are reachable given expected share target prices. The companies we looked at are United States Steel Corp. (NYSE: X), Nucor Corp. (NYSE: NUE), Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD), Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM), Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX), Silver Wheaton Corp. (NYSE: SLW), Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE: FCX), Southern Copper Corp. (NYSE: SCCO), Titanium Metals Corp. (NYSE: TIE), Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA), and Molycorp, Inc. (NYSE: MCP). All data from Yahoo! Finance as of the early afternoon today.

United States Steel Corp. (NYSE: X) has a median target price of $40.00 from 14 brokers. Shares are trading today at $23.52, for an implied gain of $16.48, or 41.2%. US Steel’s forward P/E is 6.46 and the company’s dividend yield is 0.90%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $18.85-$64.03, and at today’s price that’s about 25% above its 52-week low and 63% below the 52-week high. The huge difference between US Steel’s 52-week high and its current price indicates a substantial opportunity here, if the company can get its act together. It owns its own sources of iron ore and coke, so it is relatively insulated from the higher costs faced by many other steel makers. The company should be doing better than this, but it’s a tough market out there.

Nucor Corp. (NYSE: NUE) has a median target price of $45.00 from 13 brokers. Shares traded today at $34.85, for an implied gain of $10.15, or 22.6%. Nucor’s forward P/E is 10.34 and the company’s dividend yield is 4.20%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $29.82-$49.24, and at today’s price that’s about 17% above the 52-week low and 29% below the 52-week high. Nucor stock recently took a hit when the company lowered third-quarter EPS estimates to $0.45-$0.55 compared with analysts’ expectation of $0.64. Demand for raw materials raises costs for Nucor, at the same time that demand in the US has fallen.

Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD) has a median target price of $18.00 from 13 brokers. Shares traded today at $10.95, for an implied gain of $7.05, or 39.2%. Steel Dynamics’ forward P/E is 6.49 and the company’s dividend yield is 3.70%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $8.78-$20.70, and at today’s price that’s about 25% above the 52-week low and 47% below the 52-week high. Like Nucor, Steel Dynamics revised EPS expectations downward last month by at least a third compared with analysts expectations.

Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE: NEM) has a median target price of $77.00 from 16 brokers. Shares are trading today at $63.24, for an implied gain of $13.76, or 17.9%. Newmont’s forward P/E is 10.2 and the company’s dividend yield is 1.9%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $50.05-$71.25, and at today’s price that’s about 26% above the 52-week low and 11% below the 52-week high. Newmont is the largest gold miner in the world and its dividend yield is also the highest among the miners. The company has committed to raising dividends if certain gold price targets are hit, making life even tougher for competitors.

Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX) has a median price target of $66.50 from 20 brokers. Shares traded today at $46.93, for an implied gain of $19.57, or 29.4%. Barrick’s forward P/E is 7.67 and the company’s dividend yield is 1%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $42.50-$55.95, and at today’s price that’s about 10% above the 52-week low and 16% below the 52-week high. Gold mining stocks have not been able to keep up with the rising price of gold mainly because the miners’ costs keep rising even as gold prices rise. Barrick is one of the lowest cost producers among the big gold mining companies, and that’s a real positive for the company.

24/7 Wall St. has compiled detailed earnings previews for the following companies: Novellus Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: NVLS); Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA); ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN); Host Hotels and Resorts Inc. (NYSE: HST); Pepsico Inc. (NYSE: PEP); Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG); J. B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. (NASDAQ: JBHT); J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM); Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY); and Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT).

Some of these companies will not really seem on the surface to be sector-movers or market-moving companies, but these have been selected because they are the first ones of their peer groups to be reporting earnings.

We have created a detailed earnings preview for each with consensus estimates from Thomson Reuters and added color in on each for investors to see what exactly is worth consideration this earnings season. We have also added in recent price history and named where to look for additonal action (or fallout).

Monday, October 10

Novellus Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: NVLS) is the first chip equipment player to report for this earnings season. it has been a few weeks since we have had earnings reports or guidance in the sector so we will be paying close attention since so many companies that are chip equipment customers have talked down their numbers in recent weeks. Our belief is that expectations are very low for the quarter ahead. Estimates are $0.68 EPS and $311.9 million in revenue; next quarter estimates are $0.50 EPS and $278.5 million in revenue. With shares hovering around $30.00 on Friday, the 52-week range is $25.26 to $41.82 and shares were above $36 in early July. After Novellus reports, we would be watching the following: Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT), KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ: KLAC), and Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ: LRCX).

Tuesday, October 11

Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) has already talked down aluminum prices and we have already seen slowing demand out of China talked about by many sectors. Alcoa keeps maintaining that it can double its business by 2020 and we do not expect that to be changed by management even if it guides lower expectations ahead. Estimates are $0.23 EPS and $6.24 billion in revenue; next quarter estimates are $0.23 EPS and $6.11 billion in revenue. At $9.80 on Friday, the 52-week range is $8.45 to $19.47 and this one was above $16 at the start of July. There are many metals stocks to watch, some in aluminum and some in other metals: Century Aluminum Co. (NASDAQ: CENX), Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. (NYSE: RS); Kaiser Aluminum Corporation (NASDAQ: KALU); Titanium Metals Corporation (NYSE: TIE); and Nucor Corporation (NYSE: NUE).

Investors couldn’t have missed seeing the recent waves of new corporate share buyback plans. What they may have not noticed as clearly is the increasing trend in “legal insider trading” — when CEOs and corporate insiders are buying stock in the open market — now that shares have come so far off the highs. 24/7 Wall St has tracked some of the key insider trades in recent days, and the numbers are impressive.

Insiders may sell shares for a myriad of reasons that have nothing to do with the underlying fundamentals of a company. But when insiders buy shares of the company in the open market, it is almost certainly because they think the shares are undervalued or will rise in the future.

We therefore ignored the large acquisitions by a holding company or an activist. We aimed to identify the top insiders who bought shares in the open market, taking the action as a statement they think shares are cheap, or at least oversold. Some of these CEOs and Officers are already up huge on their purchases. Maybe they are on to something and understand how their companies will fare in this economy better than what overall market panic might indicate.

Companies Whose Own CEOs Are Now Buying:

Titanium Metals Corporation’s (NYSE: TIE) chairman Harold Simmons grabbed his checkbook to buy shares. Simmons spent some $8.2 million to buy 600,000 shares of common stock at a volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of $13.6492. Simmons owns millions of shares with his spouse and via other entities under his control. Other officer and insider purchases were recorded as well in recent days. Shares are back up to $14.85, and the 52-week range here is $13.80 to $22.93. TIE was an $18 stock as recently as August 2.

Equity One Inc. (NYSE: EQY) is a community shopping center REIT, and the Chairman, Chaim Katzman, has spent another $5.5 million or so on multiple days at multiple prices to buy shares. One day alone was a 215,168 share buy at a VWAP of $17.40, and other prices were below $17.00. Katzman now holds more than 52 million shares, and the price is back up above $17.50. The 52-week range is $15.07 to $20.27, and the REIT has a current dividend north of 5%. Keep in mind that the stock traded around $20 as recently as July 22.

Amphenol Corpration’s (NYSE: APH) chairman Martin Loeffler spent $4.99 million buying 115,300 shares of the cabling company on August 5 at a VWAP of $43.31. Shares are already back up to $46.75, and the 52-week trading range was $39.61 to $59.11. It is interesting to know that insiders were selling shares early in 2011 at prices closer to $55.00. The Chairman must think Amphenol has sold off too much.

Leap Wireless International Inc. (NASDAQ: LEAP) has been pounded of late, but chairman of the board Mark Rachesky bought shares under the “MHR” entities, where he effectively raised his stake by another 166,000 shares bought at a price of $7.1434 (VWAP), and took the stake to 25.9%. He previously purchased 500,000 shares at $6.46 for some $3.22 million. Shares are now at $7.65, and the 52-week range is $5.78 to $17.66. What matters here is that LEAP was a $10.00 stock as recently as August 3 and a $15.00 stock as recently as July 22 before the huge selling wave hit. Dr. Rachesky is the co-founder and president of MHR Fund Management LLC, which is an investment manager of various private investment funds.

Huntsman Corporation (NYSE: HUN) is a former buyout target that did not get acquired. It turns out the Huntsman family sees value here: Officers Peter Huntsman bought 100,000 shares at $11.37 for over $1.1 million, and Jon Huntsman bought 200,000 shares at $11.48 per share for proceeds of $2,296,000.00. Shares of this $3.3 billion chemical company are already back up at $13.93, and the 52-week trading range is $8.47 to $21.52.

Morgan Stanley’s (NYSE: MS) CEO James Gorman last week showed his conviction and confidence in the company … albeit a bit too early. Gorman spent more than $2 million in open market transactions for 100,000 shares at VWAP of $20.6207. The shares were purchased in multiple transactions at prices ranging from $20.555 to $20.73, and the date of the transaction is August 4. Morgan Stanley shares fell below $16.50 at the peak of the selling panic this week, but the stock is back up to $17.50. Gorman was making a statement, but he jumped in a bit too early — before the U.S. downgrade and before the E.U. bank mess.

Greenbrier Companies Inc. (NYSE: GBX) saw waves of insider buying from its president & CEO William Furman this week. He bought roughly 100,000 shares of stock at prices of $12.92 to $15.00. He now holds about 1.3 million shares. Greenbrier manufactures railroad car equipment as well as marine barges. The 52-week trading range is $9.10 to $30.38.

Charter Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) is freshly under a share buyback plan now that it has emerged from Chapter 11. CFO Christopher Winfrey purchased some 25,000 shares at $46.02 for a total of about $1.15 million. Shares are back up to $47.50, and the 52-week trading range is $31.36 to $61.15. With the CFO buying shares as well as a $200 million share buyback plan, it seems the company may actually believe in its own worth.

Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NYSE: NLY) is going to benefit from the new perpetually low rates courtesy of Ben Bernanke and for the fact that the debt ceiling issue is behind us. Kevin Keyes, chief strategic officer and head of capital markets, has decided that Annaly will be able to keep borrowing at next to nothing rates, and buying mortgage products so that the REIT can pay out 90% of its income for massive yields. He spent more than $850,000, buying 50,000 shares on August 8 at $17.13 VWAP. With this purchase, he doubled his stake in the company. Shares are back up to almost $18, and the 52-week trading range is $14.05 to $18.79. NLY one has a double-digit dividend yield at the current payout.

Dominion Resources, Inc. (NYSE: D), a producer and transporter of power, had a buy in window open up when five insiders acquired more than 15,000 shares in direct market purchases. The insiders included the CEO and CFO as well as as directors. They bought at share prices of $46.11 to $48.21. Shares are back up to $48.00, and the 52-week range is $41.13 to $50.45. Keep in mind that Dominion is a $27 billion company.

Windstream Corporation (NASDAQ: WIN), the rural telecommunications services provider acquiring Paetec Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: PAET), has seen president & CEO Jeffery Gardner buy 17,800 shares along with VP Grant Raney. Chairman Dennis Foster bought 10,000 shares as well. The various purchases were a mix of ‘non open market’ and direct purchases at prices between $11.00 and $11.50. These same insiders had also made indirect and direct purchases of shares in May and June at prices closer to $13.00. What is interesting is that these insiders are growing shares during the midst of an acquisition of broadband provider Paetec for more than $700 million.

Middleburg Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: MBRG) is interesting, even if it might not seem the biggest buy in the world. Ousted Berkshire Hathaway executive David Sokol spent about $260,000 to buy 8,317 more shares of Middleburg at $14.56, and another 11,000 shares at $14.38. Sokol now has over 1.4 million shares, direct and indirect, and he has been thought of as a buyer of the banking and financial services company. MBRG trades only about 10,000 shares a day, and has a $101 million market cap. Its 52-week trading range is $13.33 to $19.00.

Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: LGND) may seem like a light purchase on the surface, but the purchase is after a period of real weakness, when shares fell from $13.50 to $11 before the recent market stabilization. Todd Davis, a director, bought 15,000 shares at a VWAP price of $10.90 in multiple transactions at prices ranging from $10.668 to $11.239. The transaction doubled his direct ownership stake of 29,201 shares. Another director, Jason Aryeh, bought 2,000 shares at $10.57, and another director, Sunil Patel, bought 5,000 shares at a VWAP of $10.74. The transaction was after earnings. The 52-week trading range of $8.14 to $14.80. Ligand also trades only about 133,000 shares a day, so this stood out more than many investors might have given it credit for.

Van Eck Global has a history of launching niche ETF products. Today’s launch of Market Vectors Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF (NYSE: REMX) is no exception. This new ETF is the first ETF for US investors that offers a pure-play on equities of the companies whose businesses are geared around the production, refining, and recycling rare earth materials. This is a hot sector currently, and the sector has many cult stock candidates in it. US-traded components are as follows: Titanium Metals Corporation (NYSE: TIE) 6.7%; Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. (NYSE: TC) 6.3%; RTI International Metals, Inc. (NYSE: RTI) 5.6%; Molycorp Inc. (NYSE: MCP) 4.1%; General Moly, Inc. (NYSE: GMO) 2.4%; Rare Element Resources Ltd. (AMEX: REE) 2.5%.

The rare earth ETF aims to track the Market Vectors Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index. The index is a modified-capitalization weighted and float-adjusted index. The companies inside the index must have the capacity to generate more than 50% of their revenues from rare earth materials and strategic metals. As of October 13, 2010, the index was comprised of 24 stocks from Australia, Canada, China and the United States. The Chinese stocks are limited to those which are currently available to foreign investors via the H-shares. The above mentioned come to less than 30% of the combined weighting of the entire ETF, hence the large international focus. Other internationally traded stocks included in the index/ETF are as follows:

Lynas Corp Ltd LYC AU

Il uka Resources Ltd ILU aU

OSAKA Titanium Technologies Co 5726 JT

Toho Titanium Co Ltd 5727 JT

China Molybdenum Co Ltd 3993 HK

Kenmare Resources PLC KMR LN

Hunan Non-Ferrous Metal Corp 2626 HK

Neo Material Technologies Inc NE M CT

Cia Minera Autlan SA B de CV AUT LAN B MM

China Rare Earth Holdings Ltd 769 HK

Ferbasa-Ferro Ligas DA Bahia FESA 4 BS

Avalon Rare Metals Inc AV L CT

Arafura Resources Ltd ARU AU

International Ferro Metals Ltd IF L LN

Quest Rare Minerals Ltd QRM CV

5N Plus Inc GXY AU

Galaxy Resources Ltd VN P CT

Dai ichi Kigenso Kagaku-Kogyo Co 4082 JT

REMX has a gross expense ratio of 0.63% and a net expense ratio of 0.57%.

Rare earth and strategic metals are industrial metals are needed for a whole host of industries, from basic metals production to defense to alternative energy to batteries and on and on. Some are known like Manganese, Titanium and Tungsten, but others such as Bastnasite, Cerium, Lanthanum, Praseodymium, Neodymium, and Europium are hardly known by most people.

This ETF created a large run in several of the components listed here. After barely an hour, we have seen over 700,000 shares trade. This is a hot sector in rare earth elements and rare earth oxides, and this ETF is one which needs to be watched very closely. Most ETFs are meant to track indexes, but the nature of this ETF could actually be an example where an ETF actually creates a move in the underlying stocks more than others. Most rare earth companies are not exactly the world’s largest companies.

If you end up with a figure of $2 billion (a theoretical figure of course) for the size of the ETF, imagine what this would do to some shares of these companies. As noted yesterday, this is a tail that could easily wag the dog.

(NYSE: BA) about the 787 Dreamliner setting a maiden flight date before the end of this year and scheduling preliminary deliveries into Q4-2010 is really getting the love put back into Boeing shares. In mid-morning trading the stock is actually up over 7% or $3.50 at $51.32 and it has already seen its average daily volume surpassed. But where this gets interesting is that so many of the key Boeing suppliers for the 787 Dreamliner are trading down. Precision Castparts (NYSE:PCP) and Spirit Aerosystems (NYSE:SPR) are both up significantly with the news and Rockwell Collins (NYSE:COL) is up, but the rest of the lot is either up marginally or is trading lower with the overall market.

Spirit Aerosystems (NYSE:SPR) is the ex-Boeing unit, which makes fuselage parts; its shares are up 7.5% at $15.85.

BE Aerospace (NASDAQ:BEAV) has cabin and seating contracts with Boeing; its shares are up 0.1% at $17.65 on low volume.

Honeywell (NYSE:HON) has the cockpit award; its shares are up 0.25% at $37.21.

Rockwell Collins (NYSE:COL) has information management pacts with Boeing; its stock is up 2.5% at $46.15 but not on active trading volume.

LMI Aerospace (NASDAQ:LMIA) has Boeing as principal customer for structural components, assemblies, and kits; its stock is up 2% at $9.21 but on very thin trading volume.

Titanium Metals (NYSE:TIE) has long-term Boeing titanium/metals supply pacts; is down some 0.6% at $8.01.

Precision Castparts (NYSE:PCP) manufactures aerospace structural castings, aerospace airfoil castings, industrial gas turbine castings; this winner is up 7.7% at $93.50 on the news.

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is too diversified to be a single news reaction-event stock has engine exposure here with the GEnx, but its stock is down 0.8% at $14.00 along with the broader market. Elsewhere…. Eaton Corp. (NYSE: ETN) is down 1.6% at $54.47, Parker Hannifin Corp. (NYSE: PH) is down 1.4% at $49.07, and Brush Engineered Materials (NYSE: BW) is down over 4% at $22.15.

The DJIA, which Boeing is a component of, is down some 77 points at around 9,465….. Boeing is currently only one of 2 of the 30 DJIA components up late this morning. If it were not for this rise in Boeing, the DJIA would be down closer to triple-digits.
