Equity markets opened mixed this morning, with the DJIA up slightly and the NASDAQ Composite and S&P 500 down slightly. That pattern held throughout the day as last night’s report from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) held tech stocks down today. Financials were mixed and no other sector took the lead to push trading higher. A positive report on existing home sales did not appease traders either. Crude oil is down today on continuing concern that Chinese demand will soften and that European growth will be low. WTI crude is down -1.92% at $98.46/barrel and Brent crude is down -1.39% at $110.00/barrel. Gold is up 0.60% at $1,664.40.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up nearly 97 points to 12,720.48 (0.76%), the NASDAQ fell nearly 2 points (-0.06%) to 2,786.70, and the S&P 500 rose a bare 0.07% or less than 1 point to 1,315.37.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Google maintained as ‘buy’ but target price cut to $700 at Canaccord Genuity; Johnson Controls Inc. (NYSE: JCI) cut to ‘neutral’ at JPMorgan; Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE: VLO) reiterated as ‘buy’ with $35 target price at Argus; Tractor Supply Co. (NASDAQ: TSCO) reiterated as ‘buy’ and target price raised to $92 at Argus; and Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) cut to ‘market perform’ at Wells Fargo.

Earnings reports since markets closed yesterday have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Google is down -8.78% at $583.39; Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) is up 2.75% at $26.33; IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) is up 4.48% at $188.61; Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) is up 1.42% at $7.06; American Express Co. (NYSE: AXP) is down -1.94% at $49.96; General Electric is down -0.21% at $19.11; Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB is up 0.74% at $73.40; and Suntrust Banks Inc. (NYSE: STI) is up 4.79% at $21.21.

Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Insmed Inc. (NASDAQ: INSM) is up nearly 30% at $4.94. The biotech company announced that the FDA has lifted a clinical hold on a lung disease drug.

The Talbots Inc. (NYSE: TLB) is up nearly 18% at $3.17. The clothing retailer is rumored to be under consideration for a takeover by two private equity firms.

Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) is up nearly 14% at $49.25. The general merchandise retailer is thought to be under consideration for a takeover offer from its largest shareholder.

NCI Inc. (NASDAQ: NCIT) is down nearly -32%, after posting a new 52-week low of $7.71 earlier today. The federal contractor will restructure to compensate for loss of contracts.

Cogent Communications Group Inc. (NASDAQ: CCOI) is down nearly -18% at $15.45. The network communications provider is suffering from the shutdown last night of the Megaupload.com website, one of Cogent’s largest customers, by federal authorities.

Futures were soft prior to the opening bell due largely to continue to worry about Europe and a forecast cut to the European Central Bank’s lending rate from 1.25% to 1%. The mid-morning report on US crude oil stocks put a halt to any thought of a crude price rise, with US inventories growing by 1.3 million barrels following a 3.9 million barrel increase the week before. WTI is trading down almost $1, at $100.30/barrel late in the day, and Brent is trading at $109.45/barrel, down more than $1.35. Gold is up nearly 0.75%, at $1,744.60.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 45 points to 12,195.61 (0.37%), the NASDAQ fell less than 1 point (-0.01%) to 2,649.21, and the S&P 500 rose 0.20% or more than 2 points to 1,261.02.

Last week, 24/7 Wall St. made the case that The Talbots (NYSE: TLB) fire its CEO Trudy F. Sullivan. Today, the company pushed her out and said it would start a CEO search.

The Talbots announced that

Ms. Sullivan, who intends to retire once a successor has been identified, has agreed to continue to serve as President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Talbots in the interim to ensure a smooth transition

The Talbots has been a perpetual money loser and same-store sales have fallen throughout most of the last two years. The firm’s share price is off 80% since Sullivan joined.

Sullivan has been in her jobs for four years — and four holiday seasons. There is powerful proof that she has done nothing to improve the company’s prospects. As a matter of fact, they are getting worse.

The sovereign debt problem in Europe gets more complex by the hour. The European Central Bank said it may intervene to buy paper issued by nations that are economically weak. This should drive down yields and give countries like Italy more time to show their seriousness about austerity. Angela Merkel of Germany said she wants aid of any kind, particularly if it involves German money, to come at a steep price to those that need it. Membership in the eurozone should involve a stronger union, and one in which nations should be held accountable for their budgets, she argued. Merkel also expressed pessimism about the region’s future, at least short term. She said, “Resolving the sovereign debt crisis is a process and this process will take years.” She also said the eurozone should expect no help from the ECB.

November car sales numbers were telling in several ways. SUV sales picked up. Perhaps American believe the drop in gas prices will be long-lived. If not, drivers with the large trucks face several years of expensive motoring. Japanese car companies continued to lose ground, with the exception of Nissan. Toyota (NYSE: TM) and Honda (NYSE: HMC) still have production disruption problems due to the March earthquake. November U.S. sales also showed the continued rising success of American car companies. All three posted substantial gains. The most impressive of them was Chrysler, which said units sold increased 45% over November of last year. The company sold more than 100,000 cars and light trucks last month. It is a compelling victory for a company that went through Chapter 11 just three years ago. It is also a victory for Fiat, which now owns Chrysler.

Retail results for November and third-quarter earnings from some store chains were another indication that several companies are now permanently out of the race for profits and better revenue. Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) posted poor quarterly results. Its store sales were weak and its investment in e-commerce expensive. The book company has battled Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) for years, and it is more clear with each quarter that the fight is one it cannot win. Weak retailers like Talbots (NYSE: TLB), Gap (NYSE: GPS) and Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS) continued to get weaker. Their competitions have overwhelmed them in price, store configuration and location, and e-commerce efforts. Those are not advantages that can be overcome.

Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Chrome browser passed Firefox as the second most used product in the business. It sits behind only Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Internet Explorer. The gains could be critical to Google’s advances into businesses like social networking. The Google browser bar offers rapid access to its products, such as social network launch Google+. Microsoft loses chances to promote its products in the browser space as its share shrinks. The Chrome advance is another example of how Google has pushed into businesses beyond search. The most prominent of these is the Android mobile OS. But Chrome, Google Maps, YouTube and Google’s image search product are parts of the largest search company’s success in diversification.

Trudy F. Sullivan is still the CEO of The Talbots (NYSE: TLB). The retailer continues to be one of the least successful in its sector. Sullivan has overstayed whatever welcome she ever had. It is time for the board to fire her.

Sullivan has run Talbots since August 2007. The company’s shares have fallen from $25 to under $2 in the past five years. Talbots has shown obvious signs over that period that Sullivan’s vision for the retailer’s store configurations and products has not worked.

Talbots just posted a third-quarter loss from continuing operations of $22.1 million, or $0.32 per share, compared to last year’s income from continuing operations of $17.0 million, or $0.24 per share. The company said comparable-store sales were down another 4% in November. It is the most recent in a series of months in which same-store sales have fallen, and that series goes back nearly three years. Talbots says it is in the process of “refurbishing” stores. The results so far are dismal. Talbots also has tried to improve results through shuttering its weakest stores. Thirty-five have been closed this year.

Even beyond losses and store closures, the most damning factor about Talbots’ financial results is that sales continue to fall. They dropped from $300 million in the third quarter of last year to $279 million. Talbots revenue is down enough so that it cannot cut its way to profitability.

Sullivan has been in her jobs for four years — and four holiday seasons. There is powerful proof that she has done nothing to improve the company’s prospects. As a matter of fact, they are getting worse.

Equity markets opened slightly lower this morning, following yesterday’s big share price increases. For most of the day stocks traded slightly lower, although they have moved to a very slight gain in the final hour of trading. China’s purchasing managers index was weaker than expected, which is probably the reason for the slow start this morning, and then new US unemployment claims were higher than expected adding more pressure on prices. The dollar has traded weaker relative to the euro, but strengthened against the yen. Crude oil is trading down marginally at $100.18/barrel and gold is also down slightly at $1,743.870/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down more than 25 points to 12,020.48 (-0.21%), the NASDAQ rose nearly 6 points (0.22%) to 2,626.20, and the S&P 500 fell -0.19% or more than 2 points to 1,244.58.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) raised to ‘buy’ at Citigroup. Other ratings action included IAMGOLD Corp. (NYSE: IAG) started as ‘outperform’ with a $25 price target at Credit Suisse; Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) raised from ‘neutral’ to ‘buy’ at Citigroup; Seagate Technology PLC (NYSE: STX) raised to ‘buy’ at Argus; Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ONXX) cut from ‘buy’ to ‘neutral’ at BofA/Merrill Lynch; and Carrizo Oil & Gas (NASDAQ: CRZO) reiterated ‘buy’ with a new price target of $49 at Canaccord Genuity.

Here are today’s big post-earnings news reactions with prices during the last half-hour of trading: Gildan Activewear Inc. (NYSE: GIL) is down -30.8% at $16.53, after setting a new 52-week low of $16.52; Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS) is down -16.9% at $14.50; Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU) is down -4.8% at $47.34; Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISLE) is down -8.5% at $4.51; The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) is up 1% at $23.41; and The Talbot’s Inc. (NYSE: TLB) is down -17.1% at $1.65, after posting a new 52-week low of $1.63. We have more details on Lululemon’s earnings and on the November sales reports from a number of retailers, including Talbot’s.

Several other standouts from today are as follows…

Pacific Ethanol Inc. (NASDAQ: PEIX) is up 26.7% at $1.33. The ethanol maker has regained compliance with Nasdaq listing requirements and has increased ownership of its four ethanol production plants to 27%.

Magma Design Automation Inc. (NASDAQ: LAVA) is up more than 25% at $7.16. The design automation firm has agreed to be acquired by Synopsys Inc. (NASDAQ: SNPS) for $7.35/share.

Clearwire Corp. (NASDAQ: CLWR) is up more than 17% at $2.09. The wireless broadband provider received a $1.6 billion investment from its majority owner Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) that will enable Clearwire to meet its $237 million debt payment. We have more details here.

Scorpio Tankers Inc. (NYSE: STNG) are down more than -20% at $5.31. The Monaco-based petroleum shipping company priced a secondary offering this morning at $5.50/share.

Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NASDAQ: HOVNP) is down more than -14% at $1.31. The homebuilder has been batted around for nearly a year now, and even improving news on construction spending can’t stop the slide.

Stay tuned for Friday. We have noted speeches due from Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard Fisher, Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser, and Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren. Here’s another noteworthy event scheduled for tomorrow (all times Eastern):
