Mattress Firm Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: MFRM) is on the retail side and has an arms-dealer model where it can sell any kind of bed to anyone. It made an acquisition and announced solid earnings and guidance. Tempur Pedic International Inc. (NYSE: TPX) had a bad earnings reaction and now fears of more problems are there.

Tempur Pedic International Inc. (NYSE: TPX) hit a new 52-week low briefly today but shares have since recovered and are down “only” 14.5% at $48.50 versus a prior 52-week low of $46.53. The downfall today is on the heels of a research report from Raymond James with the assumption that Tempur-Pedic is aggressively discounting one of its top-sellers. This stock is now down by more than 40% when its earnings beat but guidance killed the shares in mid-April, but its market value is still $3.07 billion according to Yahoo! Finance.

Mattress Firm Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: MFRM) is pulled down 8% to $35.92 on the day, but it is growing its store sales, growing by an acquisition. This may just be a gift considering that this 2011 IPO traded as low as $21.03 and above $48.00 at the peak after its IPO. Its market cap is $1.2 billion.

Another bedding player named Select Comfort Corporation (NASDAQ: SCSS) is down in sympathy too with a 4.7% drop down to $28.15 on Monday. Select Comfort is worth $1.6 billion in market capitalization.

Sealy Corporation (NYSE: ZZ) is worth only $187 million and its shares are down only 1% at $1.85 on the day.

Most of the after-hours movers are on earnings reports this Tuesday evening. We have been tracking moves and added color on the after-market trading in shares of the following: Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AMEX: AVL), Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN), Internet HOLDRs (NYSE: HHH), Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE: JNPR), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), CIENA Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), Keynote Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: KEYN), Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS), Linear Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: LLTC), Questcor Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOR), and Tempur Pedic International Inc. (NYSE: TPX).

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) managed to blow past earnings and guide revenues higher. All this while margins continue to be overlooked. Shares were up and are up even more now at all-time highs… The gain is up 6.7% at $228.65 on nearly 3 million shares since the 4PM bell.

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AMEX: AVL) is getting squashed after a filing for the sale of 7 million shares of common stock “to complete a bankable feasibility study on the Thor Lake Project and for working capital and general corporate purposes.” Shares rose 6.9^ today to $6.81 and shares are almost giving it all back with a 6% drop to $6.81 in the after-hours.

Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN) fell 3.6% today to $69.65 ahead of earnings. It beat estimates but gave light guidance for 2011 after having seen such a big run before. Shares are down over 9% at $63.25 right before the closing bell.

Internet HOLDRs (NYSE: HHH) has traded an unusual 13,000 shares and is up 3.3% at $81.98 in the after-hours session. The reason is simple: the weighting is over 48.5% Amazon.com.

Networking equipment makers be damned! Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) is down over 13% at $27.04 on more than 3.4 million after-hours shares. The “little-Cisco” turned in light earnings for the second quarter and guidance for the third quarter looked light as well after blaming deployment timing delays of service provider.

Speaking of Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), if things are soft at Juniper the idea is that there is no way things are great before the company has even implemented a turnaround and restructuring yet. Cisco is down 1.7% at $16.01 on nearly 1 million shares since the 4PM bell. Elsewhere, CIENA Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN) is down 5% at $16.70 after the closing bell.

Keynote Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: KEYN) beat earnings and raised its guidance for sales and earnings in Q3… Shares are up 10% at $24.00, above the 52-week range of $9.00 to $23.75.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS) beat estimates, in part from Asian operations, and shares are up 5.4% at $48.75 on more than 1.8 million shares in the after-hours session.

Linear Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: LLTC) may have grown revenues 27% but the focus and emphasis is on light guidance for the next quarter. Shares are down right at 5% at $29.65 in the after-hours session this evening.

Questcor Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOR) managed to turn in above-estimate earnings sales after the close, sending shares up 8.8% at $28.30. Keep in mind that the 52-week range before this was $9.01 to $28.20.

Tempur Pedic International Inc. (NYSE: TPX) was halted, a fear, but the fear was unwarranted… The company beat earnings, raised guidance, and started a share buyback plan. Shares closed down 1% today but the after-hours session has shares up 6.4% at $66.02.

After looking at downgrades this morning and then after the stocks that hit 52-week lows, Sealy Corp. (NYSE:ZZ) showed up on the list. Sealy saw its stock become broken last week after its $0.22 EPS was well short of $0.32 estimates. It seems that soft housing is the obvious, but lower pricing power is also a factor here. Its share buyback plan isn’t doing much to keep it off of lows either. Banc of America’s downgrade from a Buy to Neutral is the extra catalyst for selling today. The 52-week low of $13.000 from Friday was taken out today, and while shares are back within a few pennies of that level it appears that $12.52 was the new low put in today. After this came public in early 2006 shares did drop down to $12.00 before coming back up to $18.00.

Select Comfort (NASDAQ:SCSS) shares are up almost 1% today, although it hasn’t done much better in general. At $14.55, shares are close to the bottom of its $13.85 to $25.25 trading range over the last 52-weeks. The standout is Tempur-Pedic (NYSE:TPX). Its shares are down marginally today at $38.91, but its 52-week trading range is $17.12 to $37.87.

These companies are all profitable and are expected to remain that way. Market caps are all somewhat low: Sealy $1.4 Billion; Tempur-Pedic $2.9 Billion; Select Comfort $637 million. These all have straight forward business models where competitors might not want to come into an established industry, and in the past each one of these have been thought of that under the right conditions could become targets of private equity. Those thoughts are probably long gone for the current buyout climate. But if they get too cheap it may be too hard not to look at.
