Assessing That Urban Outfitters Turnaround

Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) is one retailer where the stall might be regaining some momentum. That is at least what the after-hours reaction has shown after the earnings report this evening contains some upside on the bottom-line and a small miss on the top-line.

The specialty apparel retail outlet owner reported earnings of $0.23 per share versus the $0.20 per share estimate from Thomson Reuters. Revenues rose by more than 8.6% on a year over basis to $568.9 million. But Thomson Reuters was calling for revenues of more than $579 million.

It was the Urban Outfitters brand itself that led the sales as same-store sales there gained 6% and the direct-to-consumer sales rose 15% versus only 2% growth on the wholesale level. Despite the market treating this as a turnaround, the gross profit rate was down 131 basis points and the inventories rose by 13%. Selling, general and administrative expenses (SG&A) rose by 62 basis points.

Shares closed up 2.1% at $26.16 with a strong tape on the stock market today, but the after-hours reaction has shares up about 7% at $28.09 against a 52-week range of $21.47 to $33.90.

Today’s earnings report does not look or feel like a solid turnaround is coming on after the growth stalled significantly, but the market is treating it as “good enough” so far.

The three major US stock indexes opened somewhat higher this morning as investors paid little attention to last night’s downgrade of Spain’s banks (more coverage here). With little economic data on tap today, US markets waited for the IPO of Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) — and waited and waited. The first trade went off about half an hour late at $42.05, well above the announced price of $38, but the stock wasn’t able to hold on to the gain, ending the day at $38.08. The US dollar index fell today, now down -0.11% at 81.291. The GSCI commodity index is down 0.04% at 633.67, with commodities mostly mixed today. Wheat is the big gainer again today, up 5.7% in Chicago and 4.9% in Kansas City. WTI crude oil closed down -1.2% at $91.48/barrel, and Brent crude trades down at -0.38% at $107.08/barrel. Natural gas continues its climb, up 5.7% today at $2.74/thousand cubic feet. Gold settled up 1.1% today, at $1,591.90/ounce, ending a four-day losing streak.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA down 74 points to 12,368.47 (-0.59%), the NASDAQ fell nearly 35 points (-1.24%) to 2,778.79, and the S&P 500 fell -0.74% or nearly 10 points to 1,295.17.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including LinkedIn Corp. (NYSE: LNKD) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a target price of $135 at Canaccord Genuity; Dendreon Inc. (NASDAQ: DNDN) started as ‘sell’ at Maxim; Bank of Ireland (NYSE: IRE) cut to ‘sell’ at Deutsche Bank; Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX) started as ‘buy’ at UBS; and Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) raised to ‘buy’ at Guggenheim.

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: ANN Inc. (NYSE: ANN) is up 3.25% at $26.69; Brown Shoe Co. Inc. (NYSE: BWS) is up 21.4% at $10.63 (more coverage here); Progressive Corp. (NYSE: PGR) is down -0.1% at $21.32; and Footlocker Inc. (NYSE: FL) is up 8.9% at $30.50.

Next week we are scheduled to get earnings reports fromTech Data Corporation (NASDAQ: TECD); Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN); Autozone Inc. (NYSE: AZO); Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY); Dell Inc. Other standouts from today include the following stocks:

Renren Inc. (NYSE: RENN) is down -20% at $4.99. The Chinese Internet company is getting whacked on Facebook’s IPO. More coverage here.

GSV Capital Corp. (NASDAQ: GSVC) is down -18.6% at $13.10. The investment company had a nice hunk of Facebook shares at a very low price — all the value is in today. More coverage here.

Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA) is down -16.3% at $6.92 after posting a 52-week low of $6.90 earlier today. Another stock that climbed on Facebook’s back during the run-up to the IPO, shares were stopped by an automatic trigger shortly after FB shares opened today. More coverage here.

MONDAY, MAY 21

Tech Data Corporation (NASDAQ: TECD) is set to report and show how the outlook is for the companies which actually distribute all of the technology components and finished smartphones and consumer electronics devices around the world. Shares were recently under $48 and the 52-week range is $38.21 to $59.29. The consensus estimate is $1.16 EPS and $6.18 billion in revenue.

Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) is going to show if its turnaround is closer or just still chugging along. Estimates are $0.20 EPS and $579.2 million in revenue. Shares were recently around $25.50 and the 52-week range is $21.47 to $33.90; the consensus target price is about $29.70.

TUESDAY, MAY 22

Autozone Inc. (NYSE: AZO) took it hard on the chin recently when rival Advance Auto warned of a difficult second quarter. This is one of the high-priced stocks and shares are around $366 against a 52-week range of $266.25 to $399.10. The consensus analyst target price is $419.80; estimates are $6.25 EPS and $2.13 billion in revenue; next quarter estimates are $8.47 EPS and $2.84 billion in revenue.

Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is in such disarray that we won’t even bother with the warnings and the caveats here. Estimates are $0.60 EPS.

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) is now trading at only about 7.5-times forward earnings. Estimates are $0.46 EPS and $14.89 billion in sales. Earnings have been choppy on guidance but the PC makers and components makers are all talking up the release of Windows 8 as a new catalyst. With shares trading just under $15.00, the 52-week range is $13.29 to $18.36 and the consensus price target is almost $19.50.

PetSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM) has been a steady “beat earnings and raise guidance” outfit as Americans will pay endless and countless dollars on Fido and Fifi. Estimates are $0.73 EPS and $1.6 billion in revenue. With shares around $56.00, the 52-week high is $59.36.

Ralph Lauren Corporation (NYSE: RL) has sold off nearly $40 from its highs since March. The question is how its business has been holding up in slowing markets even if the U.S. sales have been strong. Estimates are $0.83 EPS and $1.6 billion in sales. With shares around $143 the 52-week range is $105.00 to $182.48 and the consensus price target from analysts is just over $190.00.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 23

Big Lots Inc. (NYSE: BIG) should be called “Warning Lots” because it has lowered guidance and been hard on two different waves. With shares under $35 and against a high of $47.22, the premium values of the dollar stores may and discounters may be hurting here. On the flip side, the bar has been set extremely low. Estimates are $0.69 EPS and $1.3 billion in revenue.

Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) is now around the $22 handle and the news of another 25,000 or more in layoffs (versus 350K as of October 31, 2011) is not helping the growth hopes. Estimates are $0.91 EPS and $29.92 billion in sales. The stock now trades at about 6-times earnings, but the consensus price target is down to just over $29.00 as no one wants to pay up for the valuation of this DJIA component.

NetApp Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) has been pounded and the last 45 days has looked like a downward staircase on its chart. At about $34.00, the 52-week range is $33.00 to $56.49 and the consensus price target objective is just over $47.00.

Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) is no longer market-influencing, but it is a cult stock and the earnings could create a large gain or a large drop. With shares under $10.50, the post IPO range is $7.83 to $26.00. Estimates are -$0.17 EPS and $74.3 million in revenue. Can the company make it to profitability by the end of next year?

Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL) is expected to be profitable. A profitable homebuilder! At $25.50, the 52-week range is $13.16 to $27.80. A lot of good news already has to be priced in, so we would want to expect upside to remain positive here. Estimates are $0.04 EPS and $381.9 million in revenue.

THURSDAY, MAY 24

Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST) almost always beats its earnings estimates. At $83.75 the 52-week range is $70.22 to $92.10; analysts have a target price of $86.80 or so. Estimates are $0.87 EPS and $22.1 billion in revenue.

Tiffany & Co. (NYSE: TIF) has come off of its highs significantly and this is the king of jewelry stores for investors. There will have been two smaller reports ahead of Tiffany in the week with Fred’s and Zale. Estimates for Tiffany are $0.69 EPS and $816.8 million. With shares under $61.00, the 52-week range is $56.21 to $84.49 and the consensus price target is $75.63.

VeriFone Systems Inc. (NYSE: PAY) has pulled back by about 20% from its highs, but the woes of the company seem to be behind it. At $44.80, the 52-week range is $30.25 to $55.89 and the consensus analyst price target is $54.10. Estimates are $0.61 EPS and $471.5 million in revenue.

Markets opened higher this morning following a solid report on US retail sales. Reports on both consumer and small business confidence both showed improvement in February (more coverage here and here). In the afternoon, the Federal Reserve left the fed funds rate unchanged and did not indicate any other changes to monetary policy (more coverage here). The Fed’s announcement pushed markets even higher to their best levels in nearly four years. The Treasury’s auction of 10-year notes boosted yields by three basis points. Crude oil moved higher today as well, with WTI crude closing up 0.4% at $106.71/barrel and Brent crude up 0.77% at $126.31/barrel. Gold settled at $1,694.20, down -0.3%

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 218 points to 13,177.83 (1.68%), the NASDAQ rose more than 56 points (1.88%) to 3,039.88, and the S&P 500 rose 1.81% or nearly 25 points to 1,395.97.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH) cut to ‘market perform’ at Wells Fargo; Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) cut to ‘hold’ at Deutsche Bank; Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) maintained as ‘neutral’ but estimates lowered at Credit Suisse (more coverage here); Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. Omeros Corp. (NASDAQ: OMER) is up about 32% at $10.10 after posting a new 52-week high of $10.88 earlier. The biopharmaceutical company’s reported a successful phase III drug trial this morning.

North Central Bancshares Inc. (NASDAQ: FFFD) is up more than 36% at $30.03 after posting a new 52-week high of $30.10 earlier. The bank holding company is merging with Great Western Bancorporation Inc..

Coleman Cable Inc. (NASDAQ: CCIX) is down more than -20% at $10.35. The electrical equipment maker reported weak quarterly earnings and offered a weak forecast this morning.

Majesco Entertainment Co. (NASDAQ: COOL) is down more than -13% at $2.57. The video game maker reported weak earnings last night. More coverage here.

Earnings season is over for the most part, but we still have many companies that are widely held stocks due to release their earnings for the week ahead. MONDAY, MARCH 5

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMCN) has already recovered handily from when alleged accounting woes were surrounding this company. This is the outdoor advertiser in China. Estimates are $0.61 EPS and $225.1 million in sales.

Teavana Holdings Inc. (NYSE: TEA) remains a premium company with great products and growth, but at a price for a small tea retail empire trading at close to 40-times next year’s expected earnings. Estimates are $0.32 EPS on $67.8 million in sales.

Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ: URBN) has recovered off of its lows but the company remains an early turnaround story. The real question is what the growth opportunities are for the next decade compared to the growth of the last decade. Earnings estimates are $0.20 EPS on $742.9 million in sales.

VeriFone Systems Inc. (NYSE: PAY) has estimates of $0.52 EPS on about $417.5 million in sales.

TUESDAY, MARCH 6

Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) remains in limbo and investors are still trying to get a better grasp on its business model as far as how it will make money. The company surprised before. Estimates are -$0.02 EPS on almost $83 million in sales and the market value is $2.2 billion.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NYSE: AEO) has estimates of $0.35 EPS and $1.05 billion in sales.

Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCE) has estimates of $0.89 EPS on just over $478 million in sales.

H and R Block Inc. (NYSE: HRB) is expected to report $0.05 EPS and $700 million sales, but next quarter is the tax-season money quarter and the estimates are currently $2.24 EPS on $2.11 billion in sales. To emphasize how much the tax season matters, the entire fiscal year-end of April 2012 is expected to be $3.01 billion.

Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV) is expected to report -$0.47 EPS and $287.6 million in sales. While this is a homebuilder and while it has been widely followed before, this is probably not going to be a sector-mover for homebuilders.

THURSDAY, MARCH 8

A123 Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: AONE) is challenged with shares now down under $2.00 and a weak performance late in the week. Estimates are -$0.41 EPS on almost $53.7 million in revenues. It seems sad that lithium-ion batteries are not doing well and around $1.80 it has a 52-week range of $1.51 to $8.70.

Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) is a ‘business update’ rather than a formal earnings release but investors will be watching its guidance. Estimates are $0.37 EPS and $426.8 million in sales.

Anheuser Busch Inbev SA (NYSE: BUD) has estimates of $0.91 EPS and $9.9 billion in sales, but keep in mind that this is now translated from Euros now that this is not a U.S.-based company.

Renren Inc. (NYSE: RENN) is down massively from its 2011 IPO but it is still very actively traded as a Facebook knock-off in China. Renren is expected to report earnings of $0.02 EPS and $32.3 million in sales.

Smithfield Foods Inc. (NYSE: SFD) is expected to report earnings of $0.67 EPS and $3.5 billion in sales.

Williams Sonoma Inc. (NYSE: WSM) is expected to report earnings of $1.13 EPS and $1.25 billion in sales. Shares are down almost 15% from the 52-week high and the shares are still close to the consensus price target of $39.43.

US equity markets opened lower this morning, but after the first hour or so of trading, the three major indexes moved to positive territory where they remained for the rest of the day. There was talk that a deal was forthcoming on the Greek debt swap deal, but that did not materialize. Maybe tomorrow? Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke didn’t have anything new to say to the US Senate committee this morning, and today’s earnings reports didn’t impress traders much either. A late day report on a big jump in December levels of consumer credit has given the market a small jolt in the last hour of trading. Crude oil is up today, with WTI crude up sharply by 1.82% at $98.67/barrel and Brent crude up 0.23% at $116.20/barrel. Gold closed up 1.4% at $1,748.40/ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 33 points to 12,878.43 (0.26%), the NASDAQ rose more than 2 points (0.07%) to 2,904.08, and the S&P 500 rose 0.20% or nearly 3 points to 1,347.05.

There were several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) started as ‘underweight’ at Barclays; IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) started as ‘buy’ with a $230 target price at Sterne Agee (our coverage here); AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) cut to ‘underperform’ at BofA/ML; Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) cut to ‘sell’ at Brean Murray; and Zoltek Cos. Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOLT) cut to ‘underperform’ at Needham (our coverage here).

Earnings reports since markets closed last night have led to some price changes as of the last half hour of trading today: Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM) is up 2.67% at $64.88 after posting a new 52-week high of $65.79 earlier today; ArcelorMittal AS (NYSE: MT) is up 3.5% at $22.19; BP plc (NYSE: BP) is down -0.41% at $46.68; Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) is up 1% at $68.71 (our coverage here); Emerson Electric Co. (NYSE: EMR) is down -2.6% at $51.99; and Louisiana-Pacific Corp. (NYSE: LPX) is down -6.5% at $8.31 (our coverage here).

The McClatchy Co. (NYSE: MNI) is up 21% at $2.71. The newspaper company reported stronger-than-expected earnings today on cost-cutting.

Coinstar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSTR) is up 16.5% at $58.90 after posting a new 52-week high of $60.81 earlier today. The video rental company will join with Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) to offer a streaming video service to compete with Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and others. More coverage here and here.

Standard Pacific Corp. (NYSE: SPF) is up 15.8% at $4.69 after posting a new 52-week high of $4.85 earlier today. The homebuilder posted good earnings today and reported that orders are up 8% in January.

Nevsun Resources Ltd. (AMEX: NSU) is down more than -30% at $4.43. The junior gold miner issued a preliminary 2012 outlook that included a sharp drop in production and in its reserves estimates.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: BPAX) is down more than -18% at $0.86. The company is the target of a new lawsuit charging it with misrepresentation. We have more coverage of BioSante here.
