Buffett Gets Deeper Into Housing and Real Estate (BRK-A, LUK, GS, CIT, HD, LOW, USG)

Buffett ImageWarren Buffett is positioning Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) to profit when the housing and property market returns to more normal levels.  Now, he is teaming up with what many investors consider a “Buffett rival.”  Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) is teaming up with Leucadia National Corp. (NYSE: LUK) to acquire the North American mortgage and servicing operations of Capmark Financial Group Inc.  Interestingly enough, a company affiliated with Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway called HomeServices of America made a real estate firm acquisition in Chicago earlier this week.

Which Buffett & Berkshire Hathaway Stocks Bounced The Most? (BRK-A, BAC, WFC, KMX, GE, GCI, IR, USG)

Buffett ImageWe recently gave a list of companies which we thought Warren Buffett might want to consider selling or lightening up on after Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A) disclosed that it had finally decided to lighten up on its giant stake in Moody’s Corp. (NYSE: MCO).  But an interesting question was brought up as a result of this.  Whether Buffett decides to unload stocks or not…. Which Buffett holdings have actually managed to bounce the most from their lows?  With today being month-end, we wanted to run some numbers here.  We already noted yesterday that if and when we see a 1,000 close on the S&P 500 Index it marks a 50% gain from the market lows in March.  There has been a huge bounce in his banking stocks, with Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) bouncing some 466% from the lows and a 214% bounce in Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC).

Whitman & Third Avenue Value Fish In Financial Insurers, REITs, Land (ABK, ACGL, LM, MBI, JOE, TPGI, TGIC, USG, VNO)

If there is one seer and age-old timeless veteran in value investing, it is M.J. Whitman.  His Third Avenue Management, LLC has filed its 13F with the SEC and it shows he is still (or at least was) betting big on what financial guarantors, land banks, and REIT’s for a portion of his value investing assets.  This total filing showed some $11.5 Billion in equity and equivalent positions (not including fixed income).  What is interesting is that this is not even all of his holdings out of financial related stocks.  But this is still nearly $1.2 Billion in combined assets.  Below are a portion of his top holdings:

Stock (Ticker)                                                              Shares             $$$$
Ambac Financial Group (ABK)               2,699,896   $69,576,000
Arch Capital Group Ltd.(ACGL)              1,461,659   $102,828,000
Legg Mason Inc. (LM)                               3,343,553   $244,581,000
MBIA Inc. (MBI)                                           13,773,096  $236,607,000
St. Mary Land & Exploration (SM)            2,620,703   $101,185,000
The St. Joe Company (JOE)                    15,347,635  $54,4995,000
Thomas Properties Group Inc. (TPGI)    2,566,549   $27,667,000
Triad Guaranty Inc (TGIC)                          1,064,023   $10,427,000
USG Corporation (USG)                             5,573,058   $199,460,000
Vornado Realty Trust (VNO)                       1,327,543   $116,757,000

M.J. Whitman and his entire crew readily admit that they do not always catch the bottom.  They try to get in before the flood gates of buyers swarm in, and sometimes they are very early and have no problem taking a 3-year or even longer time horizon.  But they do try to look through the junk heap to see what can be cleaned up with some TLC.  Please be advised that this is a small portion of their holdings, and that full list can be seen here

Gappers: 52-Week Intraday Lows After Open (WMT, HD, MOT, AMGN, CFC, AMD, IP, MOT, USG)

It is always good to remember that just because stocks trade at intraday lows, it doesn’t mean that they are going to stay that way or that they are going to roll over and die.  This VIX ramping over 30 yesterday at the end of the day and staying there is going to end up being an Omen or something that gets the market closer to an inflection point.  That may only be a temporary event, but that is what history has dictated time after time. Time will be the verdict, and fortunately summer trading will be back to normal in just over two weeks.  Maybe just printing this list will be that catalyst, but it still feels like it is too soon to try to be a hero.  Here is the opening list of some key stocks that hit 52-week lows after opening:

Wal-Mart (WMT) sub-$43.00… old low $43.09

Home Depot (HD) $32.96…. old low $33.08

Amgen (AMGN) $49.60… old low $49.71

Countrywide Financial (CFC) $17.27… old low $19.25

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD)… old low $11.85

International Paper (IP) $31.55… old low $31.77

Motorola (MOT) $15.95… old low $16.01

USG Corp. (USG) $36.15… old low $36.28

Cramer Talks Homebuilders (BRK/A, HOV, PHM, USG, GE, GRP)

On today’s STOP TRADING segment on CNBC, Jim Cramer addressed the homebuilders all being up based on the rumors that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK/A).  Cramer said it would more likely be Pulte Homes (NYSE;PHM) because Hovnanian (NYSE:HOV) is more regional and he can go in bigger with Pulte.  This shows that it is too hard to short in this market.  Cramer said Buffett has always liked this group.Cramer also noted USG (NYSE:USG today).  If this all sounds familiar there is a reason

Cramer also noted that Grant Prideco (NYSE:GRP) is the one to step up to after the General Electric (NYSE:GE) hint that it might begin building rigs in its earnings conference call.  Grant Prideco shares traded up more than 1% on this Cramer endorsement.

(NYSE:HOV).  The truth is that anything is possible, particularly since Buffett likes businesses that you never have to sell.  It isn’t even worth trying to debate the truth or fiction of this because you can see it in the stock with Hovnanian (NYSE:HOV) up 9% as short sellers don’t want to be caught in this market and don’t want to be caught on the wrong side of a Buffett bet.  Hovnanian has much exposure to the volatile California and sensitive Florida markets, and this makes the thought of this questionable.  Once again though, why bother questioning it as the sector is up on the hopes and on short covering.

This has homebuilders higher, and even has the SPDR Homebuilders ETF (AMEX:XHB) up 2.5% at $30.80.  based on an initial look at the chart on the "XHB" as a group, this doesn’t really change anything.  But a chart won’t be able to fight a buyout or stake taken by Buffett.  that sector is in the tubes and the only good news in the group is that "less bad news than before" will come at some point.  It always does.

Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) already has many housing related plays as wholly owned: Benjamin Moore & Co., Clayton Homes, Johns Manville, Jordan’s Furniture, Nebraska Furniture Mart, RC Willey Home Furnishings, Shaw Industries, Star Furniture, Acme Brick Company, and more.  So anything is possible in the sector.  But what has to be asked is "WHAT ABOUT USG CORP (NYSE:USG)?"  USG is trading under that $50.00 threshold and supplies sheetrock and related products to many of the homebuilders.  It is a long-standing "Buffett rumor target" since he owns such a big stake and would be quite easy for Berkshire Hathaway to integrate.

It is always interesting to see how Wall Street bets with or against Warren Buffett’s stock holdings.  These are among the most recent holdings of the great Berkshire Hathaway (BRK/A-NYSE) and you’ll be able to see how there was more of an increase in short selling in the Buffett holdings.  Keep in mind that by now many of these will no longer be current holdings because these public company holdings change from quarter to quarter, and for that matter there will be newer holdings that are not included in here.
