When Your $4,000 Road Bike Gets Recalled

January 18, 2012 by Jon C. Ogg

OK, so this has nothing to do with the world of high finance nor Wall Street other than the notion that you are probably a one-percenter if have purchased one of these… The CPSC recall page (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) has announced the voluntary recall of the 2012 Model Year Giant Defy Advanced and Avail Advanced Bicycles.  So far, only about 900 units have been sold.  Giant Bicycle is located in Newbury Park, California but the bikes are manufactured in Taiwan.

The hazard is listed as “The fork can crack, posing a fall hazard to riders.”  Fortunately no incidents have been reported.

  • “This recall involves all 2012 model year men’s Giant Defy Advanced 0, 1 and 2 model bicycles and the women’s Giant Avail Advanced 0, 1, and 2 model bicycles. “Giant” and the model name are printed on the bicycle. The bicycles are various colors and sizes.”

The bike units have been sold by authorized dealers nationwide from August 2011 through November 2011 for between $3,000 and $4,550.

The recommendation and remedy is simple: “Consumers should immediately stop riding the recalled bicycles and contact any authorized Giant Bicycle dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the fork.”

Our suggestion: DEMAND NEW FORKS FROM A DIFFERENT MAKER!!!

As a fellow road bike rider (not on a Giant), just take it at face value that you do not want to find out about this the hard way.
