Tuesday Closing Bell: Markets Post Another Solid Gain

September 10, 2013: U.S. markets opened higher on Tuesday morning following another strong release of economic data from China. Today’s big new was the expected announcement from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) of its new iPhone 5S and 5C models, but there were also some big changes to the DJIA which should make some stocks in the average meaningless.

Asian and European markets closed higher today, while Latin American markets closed mixed.

Wednesday’s calendar includes the following data releases and events (all times Eastern):

  • 7:00 a.m. – Mortgage Bankers Association purchase applications
  • 10:00 a.m. – Wholesale trade
  • 10:30 a.m. – EIA weekly petroleum status report
  • 1:00 p.m. – 10-year note auction

Stocks on the move: Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) is up 4.6% at $3.86. SolarCity Corp. (NASDAQ: SCTY) is up 22.4% at $36.58. NanoString Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: NSTG) is up 66.4% at $12.68. Urban Outfitters Inc. (NASDAQ: URBN) is down 10.2% at $38.36. Model N Inc. (NYSE: MODN) is down 31.8% at $10.05.

There were no earnings releases of note this morning, but after today’s close we’re scheduled to hear from Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc. (NYSE: RH).

In all, 200 stocks put up new 52-week highs today, while only 37 stocks posted new lows.
