America’s 10 Most Literate Cities

April 2, 2017 by Douglas A. McIntyre

A new study from Central Connecticut State University lists the most literate cities in the U.S. At the top of the list is Washington DC, followed by Seattle.

The study, entitled America’s Most Literate Cities 2016, is the latest in a series which dates back to 2003

In a summary of how the study was done, Dr. John W. Miller, president emeritus of Central Connecticut State University the study’s author, wrote:

Drawing from a variety of available data resources, the America’s Most Literate Cities study ranks the largest cities (population 250,000 and above) in the United States. This study focuses on six key indicators of literacy: number of bookstores, educational attainment, Internet resources, library resources, periodical publishing resources, and newspaper circulation.

Research for the current edition of America’s Most Literate Cities was conducted in collaboration with the Center for Public Policy & Social Research at CCSU.
