Apple, Boeing Push DJIA Higher Monday

February 12, 2018: Markets opened higher higher again Monday and have been marching steadily higher for most of the day. The Trump administration’s infrastructure plan calling for another massive round of deficit spending has juiced stocks today as well. Traders will be looking to Wednesday’s consumer price index report for guidance on when the Fed might raise interest rates again.

WTI crude oil for March delivery settled at $59.29 a barrel, up about 0.2% for the day. April gold added about 0.8% on the day to settle at $1,326.40. Equities were headed for a higher close close about 10 minutes before the bell as the DJIA traded up 1.63% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 1.31%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 1.46%.

Bitcoin futures (XBTG8) for February delivery traded at $8,890, up about 3.4% on the CBOE after opening at $8,320 this morning. The digital currency’s trading range for the day was $8,010 to $8,890.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Monday was Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) which traded up 4.21%% at $163.00. The stock’s 52-week range is $132.75 to $180.10. Volume was about 65% above the daily average of around 32 million shares. The company had no specific news.

The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) traded up 3.65% at $345.00. The stock’s 52-week range is $166.35 to $361.45. Volume was about 10% above the daily average of around 4.7 million shares. The company had no specific news Monday, but arch-rival Airbus has stopped accepting new deliveries of an engine from Pratt & Whitney due to a new problem with the geared turbofan engine.

American Express Co. (NYSE: AXP) traded up 3.52% at $94.95. The stock’s 52-week range is $75.51 to $102.39. Volume was around 6 million shares, about 40% above the daily average of about 3.7 million. The company had no specific news Monday.

DowDuPont Inc. (NYSE: DWDP) traded up 2.91% at $71.50. The stock’s 52-week range is $59.29 to $77.08. Volume was about 15% below the daily average of around 8.3 million. The company had no specific news.

Of the Dow stocks, 29 are on track to close higher Monday and just one (GE) is set to close lower.
