Thursday’s Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500
March 15, 2018 by Chris LangeMarch 15, 2018: The S&P 500 closed relatively flat at 2,747.34. The DJIA closed up 0.5% at 24,873.73. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.2% at 7,481.74.
Thursday was a relatively positive day for the broad U.S. markets. The main highlight was that the Dow made a slight recovery from its big drop on Wednesday. However, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq could not make up their minds. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were industrials and technology up 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were materials and consumer staples down 1.3% and 0.8%, respectively.
Crude oil was up 0.4% at $61.19.
Gold was down 0.7% at $1,316.30.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was EQT Corp. (NYSE: EQT) which traded down over 5% at $49.72. The stock’s 52-week range is $43.70 to $67.84. Volume was 7.6 million compared to the daily average volume of nearly 4 million.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Dollar General Corp. (NYSE: DG) which rose about 5% to $93.47. The stock’s 52-week range is $65.97 to $105.82. Volume was over 10 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.6 million.
