Thursday’s Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 22 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 2.5% at 2,643.71. The DJIA closed down 2.9% at 23,960.20. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 2.4% at 7,166.68.

Thursday was an absolute disaster for the broad U.S. markets. There didn’t seem to be anything positive about Thursday for any of the major indices. The Dow was the biggest loser of the group, it lost nearly 3% on the day, dropping over 700 points just ahead of the close. The S&P 500 sectors were almost all negative. The most positive sector was utilities up 0.4%. The worst performing sectors were financials, industrials, and materials down 3.8%, 3.3% and 3.0%, respectively.

Crude oil was down 1.3% at $64.31.

Gold was up 0.5% at $1,327.40.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was AbbVie Inc. (NYSE: ABBV) which traded down about 13% at $97.41. The stock’s 52-week range is $63.12 to $125.86. Volume was nearly 26 million compared to the daily average volume of 6.3 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was PG&E Corp. (NYSE: PCG) which rose about 3% to $44.16. The stock’s 52-week range is $37.30 to $71.57. Volume was 3.8 million compared to the daily average volume of 6.3 million.
