Tuesday’s Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

July 31, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.5% at 2,816.18. The DJIA closed up 0.4% at 25,414.37. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.6% at 7,671.79.

Tuesday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets, after all of the major averages took some punishment on Monday. Crude oil basically gave back all its gains from Monday. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly positive. The most positive sectors were industrials and real estate up 2.1% and 1.7%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were financials and energy down 0.8% and 0.2%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen trading down 2.0% at $68.72.

Gold was last seen trading flat at $1,223.70.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE: CMG) which fell about 7% to $432.64. The stock’s 52-week range is $247.52 to $483.29. Volume was just about 4.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 0.7 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN) which traded up over 11% at $322.02. The stock’s 52-week range is $170.31 to $322.08. Volume was 3.4 million compared to the daily average volume of 0.8 million.
