Google Fiber Coming to Austin

April 9, 2013 by Jon C. Ogg

GoogleLogoFirst it was Kansas City, now it is Austin. Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced that it is going to be launching its Google Fiber service for ultra high-speed Internet and TV service in Austin, Texas. The first launch is expected to be in mid-2014 but this will obviously not cover all of Austin.

Google said that it plans to focus within the Austin city limits, so areas out around Lake Travis and the Hill Country are not going to be able to get in on this offering any time soon. The company even said that specific boundaries and neighborhood definitions will be announced later.

If the Kansas City offering remains static, there will be free internet after a one-time $300 install or $25 per month fee for 12 months. The gigabit internet service is $70 per month, and the gigabit internet plus TV is $120 per month.

There is a reason to believe that the rollout in Austin will be slow. In Kansas City, the market there has been established for some time. Many surrounding areas still do not have access outside of the Kansas City markets in Kansas and Missouri.
