‘Black Panther’ Ticket Sales Cruise Toward $500 Million, May Hit Top 10 of All Time

March 4, 2018 by Douglas A. McIntyre

Ticket sales for the extraordinarily successful “Black Panther” will probably reach $500 million this weekend, based on domestic sales. When international sales are added, the number will approach $900 million,

The real strength of “Black Panther” shows up is a comparison with ticket sales for the other most successful movies of all time. The second most popular film of 2018 is “Fifty Shades Freed” has total domestic ticket sales of $93 million, followed by “Peter Rabbit” at $76 million, and “Insidious: The Last Key” at $67 million. The domestic gross of “Black Panther” is more than that of the next 10 movies on the top grossing list of 2018 combined.

“Black Panther” will also become one of the top-grossing movies of all time, on a non-inflation adjusted basis. It is in 14th place now, as of last weekend. At its current rate of ticket growth, it will be in the Top 10 by the end of this weekend, passed “Finding Dory” and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast.” It has a longer shot of moving into the top five, which would mean it has to replace “Marvel’s The Avengers” on the list.

Box Office Mojo’s comments on “Black Panther’s” progress:

Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther continues to lead the charge, pulling in an estimated $16.3 million on Friday with early estimates looking at a $63+ million weekend, which means that $500 million mark by the end of the weekend is going to be close.

The progress of “Black Panther” also will keep Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) studio Buena Vista in the top spot among U.S. studios in market share. That share was 28% as of last weekend, which represents $537 million in ticket sales. The figure could well go to 30%. It has a huge lead over second place Sony/Columbia which had a market share of 17%.

“Black Panther” will continue to write a place in the record books as each week in release passes.
