‘Venom’ Has Huge Box Office Open, but There Are 43 Marvel Films in Front of It

As a matter of fact, it set a record for any October weekend opening ever. However, the Marvel franchise is so successful that “Venom” has a long way to go to get into the top tier of Marvel movies. There are 43 movies ahead of it, based on U.S. box office sales.
“Venom,” released by Sony/Columbia, posted ticket sales of approximately $80 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That is about $20 million ahead of the previous October record holder, “Gravity,” released in October 2013. Its gross for the weekend was $55.7 million.
“Venom” also did well around the world. Its box office haul outside the United States was just over $125 million, which puts it weekend total worldwide at $205 million.
“Venom” did well despite horrible reviews. Only 31% of reviews at movie site Rotten Tomatoes were positive. However, the film was likely helped by the fact that 89% of the audience that saw the film liked it.
Marvel films have been so successful that so far “Venom” is only 44th on the movies in the franchise. It will climb the ladder as the weeks pass, but it will be difficult for “Venom” to get into Marvel’s top-tier by U.S. ticket sales.
On the Marvel list, “Venom” is bracketed by two movies from the same series. “Blade,” released in 1998, has total ticket sales of $70 million. “Blade II,” released in 2002, had total ticket sales of $82 million.
Box Office Mojo thinks total “Venom” ticket sales could eventually pass $200 million in the United States. This would put it 26th or 27th on the Marvel franchise list. Currently, the 27th place is held by “Thor: The Dark World,” which had box office sales of $206 million. In 26th place, “X2: X-Men United” had domestic ticket sales of $215 million.
“Venom” will never near the top tier of Marvel movies based on ticket sales. By that measure, “Black Panther” is first at $700 million, and second place “Avengers: Infinity War” brought in $679 million.
