Minimum wage hikes at the start of 2019 will affect millions of workers across 20 states. According to NBC News: “Millions of U.S. workers will see increased pay in 2019 due to minimum-wage increases in 20 states and 21 cities. With the federal minimum wage stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009, many states and cities have taken it upon themselves to raise the rate for the lowest-paid workers. Eight states — Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, and Washington State— are phasing in increases that will eventually put their minimum wages at $12 to $15 an hour, according to the National Employment Law Project (NELP), a nonprofit that advocates for higher minimum wages.”

President Donald Trump continued to insist that the Congress fund a border wall between the United States and Mexico, harming a chance to end a partial government shutdown. According to The New York Times:

The television is on. The phone is never far away. And President Trump is repeatedly calling allies such as members of Congress and conservative radio hosts, telling them privately that he will not give in on his demand for funding for a border wall. What the president who campaigned on his ability to cut deals has not done, nine days into a partial government shutdown over his signature campaign issue, is reach out to Democratic congressional leaders to strike one.

A retired general attacked President Trump’s ethics on TV. According to NBC News:

When asked if Trump is immoral, McChrystal said: “I think he is.”
