In militaries across the world, combat aircraft perform a wide range of missions, aiding in important defense strategies. A nation’s arsenal of aircraft is designed for a multitude of purposes. These jets are capable of attacking enemy nations, performing reconnaissance, and engaging in stealth missions. They include top-of-the-line technology and avionics. In more recent years, air forces across the globe have added the use of unmanned combat aerial vehicles, which have reshaped modern warfare.

Despite the rapid advancement of aviation technology, some older models of aircraft are still employed by nations worldwide. One such plane dates back to 1960. The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is used for a wide range of roles thanks to its versatility. This particular plane is capable of being outfitted with updated systems, making it a relevant aircraft even 60 years after its initial service date.

24/7 Wall St. is taking a look at combat aircraft being ordered by world militaries from older models like the L-39 Albatros to newer fifth-generation fighter jets. To identify the oldest combat aircraft that world militaries are still buying, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 2024 World Air Forces report from FlightGlobal, an aviation and aerospace industry publication. We ordered these aircraft chronologically. We also included supplemental data on the type of aircraft, how many of these aircraft are in active service, and what militaries employ these aircraft.
