China and the United States have long been competing against each other to develop top-tier military technology. Recently, an officer for the U.S. Air Force cautioned that China could surpass the United States in creating the first sixth-generation fighter jet. In fact, rumors suggest that China’s sixth-generation fighter jet prototype has already taken an initial flight. This seems to be a pathway for China to challenge America’s air dominance and air supremacy. Air supremacy is important, from a militaristic standpoint, because it provides advantages like a better ability to conduct surveillance or preventing enemy forces from bombing our ground forces. That’s why the United States is also moving forward in developing next-generation aircraft through the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program. However, if China is able to release its fighter jet first, it could prove potentially harmful to U.S. military operations. (This fighter jet can hit 1,875 mph.)
The US military utilizes a wide array of aircraft within the Air Force and also in other branches of the military, like the Navy. Each piece of equipment is chosen for its speed and other capabilities. Here, 24/7 Wall St. is taking a closer look at some of the fastest and slowest aircraft in the U.S. military. 24/7 Wall St. referenced the report, 2024 World Air Forces, from FlightGlobal, an aviation and aerospace industry website, to identify all of the planes in active service in the U.S. military. We ranked aircraft by top speed. We excluded all trainer aircraft and helicopters and all aircraft from the Coast Guard. Supplemental data regarding the type of aircraft, how many are in active service, and how many are on order came from FlightGlobal.
Why Are We Covering This?

Understanding the diversity in speed and capabilities of the aircraft used by our military is important for a couple of reasons. It highlights the technological breadth and versatility of our military fleet, as well as where the U.S. is prioritizing its purchases. Recognizing the different speeds and operational roles also helps us appreciate how these elements come together to form a robust national defense.
