Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine several years ago now, countries across the globe have been pushed to determine which side they back. During a 2023 UN resolution that called for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine, Belarus, Syria, Eritrea, North Korea, Mali, and Nicaragua voted against the resolution — so it’s fair to say that these nations may support Russia, or at least be less concerned about Russia’s territorial expansion into Ukraine. However, on the opposite side of the coin, many NATO nations are feeling increasingly frustrated by what they see as Russia’s oversight — not just in Ukraine, but in Russia’s encroachment on other territory. Russia has seemingly attempted cyber-sabotage against the Netherlands, damaged underwater cables in the Baltic Sea, and even convinced footsoldiers to commit arson in Lithuania. At this point, it seems as though NATO nations are both strengthening their support of Ukraine while also bolstering their own defenses: Sweden, Norway, Lithuania, and Finland have been looking at purchasing more military vehicles, and Spanish automobile manufacturer Tecnove will begin making armored vehicles for Ukraine. (Americans are fighting in Ukraine right now. Is it legal?)
As our world heads towards what seems like an inevitable war, we’re increasingly seeing a focus on military vehicle acquisition — and for good reason. Military vehicles are essential in modern warfare in combat, surveillance and reconnaissance, and troop support scenarios. These vehicles offer significant firepower but also protection against enemy fire. Here, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 33 countries around the world with the largest military vehicle fleets. To do so, we used the 2025 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, which evaluates 145 countries on over 60 different factors to determine which country has the most military power. The smaller the number, the larger the power (and vice versa). We listed the countries in order from least to most military vehicles. All additional information on the types of military vehicles, as well as the power scores, was also taken from Global Firepower.
Updated in April 2025 to adjust military strength rankings and to provide a look into the conflicts happening in Europe and beyond that are encouraging more countries to build their military vehicle fleets.
Why Are We Covering This Now?
For as long as civilization has existed, the world has witnessed shifting power balances and alliances which have ultimately shaped the current geopolitical landscape. While key players like the United States, China, and Russia are considered the strongest military powers in the world, there are a number of other nations with their own spheres of influence and strengths that impact global relations from a military perspective. Looking at military vehicles specifically is important because these vehicles are the foundation for any military to move, supply, and sustain operations across long distances.
But the importance of military vehicles also goes beyond what’s happening on the battlefield and gives us a deeper look into how countries are prioritizing their military defense spending. With the Netherlands recently contracting Osh Kosh Defense for the production of 150 customized JLTV tactical vehicles, and the Maldives unveiling its new Ajban 4×4 light armored vehicles, we can already see how certain countries are bolstering their forces should ongoing global conflict boil over.
