This Is When Your Favorite Stores Open on Black Friday

November 19, 2019 by Douglas A. McIntyre

Black Friday is, by many estimates, the top shopping day of the holidays based on revenue, at least for brick-and-mortar retailers. It is certainly the day when most large retailers get their major starts for the final six weeks of the year. A number of retailers also kick off their online sales events.

As time has passed, Black Friday sales have moved earlier and earlier, so that many actually begin on Thanksgiving. Here, with the help of BlackFriday.com and 24/7 Wall St. analysis of each retailer, are the hours favorite retailers will open. All times are Eastern Standard unless otherwise noted.

Walmart
> Stores open: 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving
> Online deals start: 10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27

The world’s largest retailer has 4,759 stores in the United States. It is also one of the largest sellers of groceries in America. Among its advantages is that people can order items online and pick them up at Walmart locations. It already is promoting seasonal deals at Walmart.com

Target
> Stores open: 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving to 1 a.m. on Black Friday
> Online deals start: All-day November 27 for RedCard (credit/debit card) holders; 6 p.m. November 27 for Circle (mobile app) members

America’s second-largest big-box retailer has 1,868 stores. It uses loyalty programs to offer large discounts, and it has started its own “same-day” delivery business, mostly for groceries and other perishables. Target already has started to promote these special prices to loyalty members at Target.com.

Macy’s
> Stores open: 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving
> Online deals start: All day November 27

The troubled retailer announced it would close 19 stores this year, a trend that dates back to 2016. It has about 680 department stores under the Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s names. It also has about 190 smaller stores, many under the Bluemercury banner. To get a jump on the competition, it has announced a “pre-Thanksgiving” one-day sale. It is also promoting free shipping for orders of over $25.

Kohl’s
> Stores open: 5:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving
> Online deals start: 12:01 a.m. (Central Time) on Monday, November 25

The retailer has about 1,100 stores. It closed four of its big Off/Aisle discount stores earlier this year. Kohl’s has a partnership with Amazon so that people can take returns to a physical location. Early discount deals for holidays offer over 15% markdowns. Kohl’s also offers discounts with promotional codes, which people print and bring to stores.

Home Depot
> Stores open: 6 a.m. on Black Friday
> Online deals start: Not announced

The nation’s largest home improvement store has just over 2,200 locations. It already has started some pre-Black-Friday sales, one of the earliest jumps on the big retail sales day. The items available for the “event” include over 3,600 products. Home Depot also offers free power tools with some orders at HomeDepot.com.

Lowe’s
> Stores open: 6 a.m. on Black Friday
> Online deals start: Not announced

This is the country’s second-largest home improvement store. It has 2,200 big-box and hardware locations, and it already has cut some appliances prices by 40% at Lowes.com. It is also heavily promoting gift cards, financing and installation services.

Best Buy
> Stores open: 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving
> Online deals start: All day Thanksgiving

The country’s largest consumer electronics retailer has over 1,000 big-box locations in North America. Its Black Friday “doorbuster” sales already have begun. It also has posted its Black Friday advertising from both newspapers and BestBuy.com. Its store pick-up program allows people to order online and get products at store locations in as little as an hour.

J.C. Penney
> Stores open: 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving
> Online deals start: Wednesday, November 27

Among America’s most troubled retailers, J.C. Penney has 850 locations, after aggressively cutting the number of stores it operates. This holiday season may be its “make or break” period. It has started to offer promotion codes online for in-store shopping. People who have the retailer’s credit card receive as much as 25% off on some items. Other items are already available at 50% off.

Sam’s Club
> Stores open: 7 a.m. on Black Friday
> Online deals start: All day Thanksgiving

With 599 locations, Sam’s Club is the Walmart division that caters to small businesses. It is heavily promoting consumer electronics products at SamsClub.com. Another major holiday promotion is meals for 10 people that cost as little as $45. Memberships that allow people to shop at Sam’s Club cost as little as $45.
