The Largest Employer in Every State

1. Alabama
> Largest employer:
> Employee headcount: 37,537

Providing jobs for more than 37,537 people as of March 4th, 2016, Walmart is the largest employer in Alabama. The company claims that full-time employees in the state earn an average of $13.12 per hour. However, that figure will soon increase. Walmart workers will benefit from a broad initiative beginning in early 2016 to improve opportunities and morale, including a pay raise.

As in many other states, Walmart’s presence in Alabama is weakening slightly. The company closed nine brick-and-mortar stores in January 2016.

2. Alaska
> Largest employer:
Providence Health & Services
> Employee headcount: 4,000+

As is the case in a number of other states, the largest employer in Alaska is a medical center. Providence Health & Services employs more than 4,000 workers in the state. A spokesperson for the company noted that this number can fluctuate from year to year. The hospital system is the largest private-sector employer in Alaska, although the military also has a considerable presence in the state. While Ted Stevens Anchorage Airport was identified as the largest employer last year, it was excluded from the list this year because current data on employee count could not be verified. It also appears that the airport may have included employees working at businesses inside the airport who are not formerly employed by the airport in their count.

3. Arizona
> Largest employer:
> Employee headcount: 33,838

Walmart is the largest private employer in Arizona. As of March 4th, nearly 33,838 people in the state worked at any one of the retail giant’s 126 locations within the state. The company says full-time employees currently earn an average of $13.20 an hour, about $5 more than the government mandated minimum wage in the state.

4. Arkansas
> Largest employer:
> Employee headcount: 51,680

Retail giant Walmart employs more people in Arkansas — its home state — than any other business or private organization. As of March 4th, the company’s total headcount in the state was 51,680. According to the company, 77 of the 123 retail locations in the state are Supercenters.

5. California
> Largest employer:
University of California
> Employee headcount: 205,177

The University of California system, which has campuses in Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, Merced, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, San Diego, and San Francisco, is the largest employer in the state. The university network also includes the UCLA Health System, which consists of five medical centers, and three national laboratories.
