Bing Predicts: NFL Week 10
November 8, 2017 by Steven M. PetersJust one step in a simple, non-contact practice drill and Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson’s season was over. And as Watson goes, so likely go the Texans’ playoff chances. Watson tore his ACL and is expected to undergo surgery this week.
Before the injury, most oddsmakers and prognosticators looked at Houston’s week 9 game against the Luck-less Colts and predicted a win. Bing Predicts also picked Houston to win the game. But Bing could not foresee Watson’s injury. No one could. Without Watson, Indianapolis took advantage and grabbed its third win of the season.
That was one of three games that Bing missed in Week 9. Bing also missed on the Redskins’ comeback win at Seattle and the Jets big huge upset over the Bills.
Still, Bing called 10 of 13 games correctly. That’s a solid prediction rate in this topsy-turvy NFL season.
For Week 10, Bing is not going out on a limb on any of the 14 games.
A closer look, though, shows Bing is favoring the road teams in seven of the games, including the Seahawks at Arizona, the Saints at Buffalo, and the Vikings at Washington. Bing makes calls on close games like Dallas at Atlanta, as well as the Giants vs. San Francisco, a battle of two flailing franchises.

Seattle Seahawks at Arizona Cardinals

Seattle (5-3), coming off a last-minute 17-14 setback to the Redskins, gets the nod against the Cardinals (4-4). It was a team loss, but kicker Blair Walsh was a disappointment when he missed three field goals. Along with 16 penalties and two turnovers, it wasn’t pretty. The Seahawks should be able to bounce back on the road. They are sticking with Walsh, a veteran kicker.
Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton, a gritty veteran, has taken over for Carson Palmer, who broke his left arm. Stanton may not get style points for his delivery, but he’s 7-3 as a spot starter for the Cardinals. He threw for 201 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the 20-10 win over the 49ers. And he got plenty of help from another gritty veteran, running back Adrian Peterson, who had 37 carries for 159 yards. It’s a quick turnaround going from Sunday to Thursday, which might be tough for the 32-year-old Peterson.

New Orleans Saints at Buffalo Bills

Quarterback Drew Brees said after six straight wins that the Saints are just scratching the surface. No wonder New Orleans (6-2) gets the edge over the Bills (5-3) on the road. Brees is loving life because he has what every successful NFL quarterback wants — a verified run game and a solid defense. Running backs Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara combined for 145 rushing yards in the 30-10 win over the Bucs, while the defense held the Bucs to 200 total yards.
The Bills hurt themselves in their loss to the Jets with three lost fumbles and 11 penalties costing 99 yards. Buffalo wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, who was acquired last week in a trade with the Panthers, is expected to make his debut in this matchup. He’s all smiles about the move and could provide a spark for the Bills.

Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears

It’s not that the Bears (3-5) are that good, but they are still favored over the Packers (4-4) at Soldier Field in an NFC North battle (of sorts) in a renewal of one of the oldest rivalries in the NFL. Actually, the Bears have a talented roster except at quarterback. They’re trying to survive the growing pains with rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. It’s been a bit painful.
The Packers are in freefall as quarterback Aaron Rodgers is out recovering from surgery to repair a broken collar bone. Green Bay has lost three straight. including Monday night’s 30-17 loss to the Lions. which was no contest at all. The Packers had hopes that quarterback Brett Hundley could keep them in the NFC North battle in case Rodgers can return late in the season. Doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. The Packers’ eight-year stretch of making it to the postseason may come to an end.
Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions

> Matchup history: Lions lead 18-5-0
The Lions (4-4), often an underdog, are the overwhelming favorites in this one. Coming off a divisional 30-17 win on Monday over the Packers, Detroit still has an eye on the NFC North title. Quarterback Matthew Stafford played his best game of the season with help from the offensive line and his receivers, who got open enough to catch his pinpoint passes. Marvin Jones Jr. and Golden Tate each made spectacular catches. The defense has played well most of the season. Now that the offense has caught up, the Lions should be able to stack wins.
The Browns (0-8) are coming off their bye week and should be ready and rested, but who are we kidding. They’re the Browns, one of two winless teams in the NFL. They’ve lost four games by at least two touchdowns. They don’t have an NFL-caliber quarterback. They do have an inept front office. Josh Gordon is back after a lengthy suspension, though he will only be eligible to return to the active roster on Nov. 27. Gordon admitted he was under the influence “every game’’ in an interview with GQ magazine. What could go wrong?

Cincinnati Bengals at Tennessee Titans

> Matchup history: Titans lead 39-34-1
Don’t look now, but the Titans (5-3) have found their groove winning three straight, including Sunday’s 23-20 victory over the lackluster Ravens. That’s exactly why they are the favorite. Quarterback Marcus Mariota was efficient, completing 67.9% of his passes for 218 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and an interception. Wide receiver Rishard Matthews pitched in with four catches for 70 yards and a score.
This will be a big test for the Bengals (3-5), who still seek a winning identity after their 23-7 loss to the Jaguars. The Bengals have won three of their four meetings with Tennessee. They got lucky when wide receiver A.J. Green was not suspended after he choked and threw punches to the helmet of Jalen Ramsey in the 23-7 loss to the Jaguars. Green was ejected and missed the second half because of a lack of discipline that was uncharacteristic for him.
Pittsburgh Steelers at Indianapolis Colts

It’s hard to stop the Steelers (6-2) when they’re on a roll. They’ve won three straight. Colts beware — the Steelers have beaten them five times in their last six games. Pittsburgh would be favored over most NFL teams this week. It should come as no surprise that they’re doing it with a strong defense, allowing just 180.0 passing yards per game, second in the NFL. Not only that, they’re coming off a bye week, so running back Le’Veon Bell will be rested along with wide receiver Antonio Brown and, of course, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Don’t take an eye off wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who had 193 receiving yards in the win over the Lions before the bye.
Indianapolis (3-6) is no longer looking forward to the return of quarterback Andrew Luck, who has been ruled out for the season. It’s a huge loss for the Colts, but they managed to win on Sunday over the Texans with quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Also instrumental in that game were running back Frank Gore and wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, who had five catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win.

New York Jets at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

It’s not like the Jets (4-5) are all of that, but they did top a formidable Bills’ squad last Thursday so they are the favorite here. The Jets lone loss to the Bucs was back in 1984, when Ken O’Brien was throwing passes to Wesley Walker. Running back Matt Forte had 14 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 9 win over Buffalo. Quarterback Josh McCown’s numbers were far from gaudy (14-of-20 for 140 yards and a touchdown), but he managed the game to get the win.
The Bucs (2-6) have hit a skid, losing five straight. Ouch. Quarterback Jameis Winston has been shut down for at least two weeks after trying to play through a shoulder injury. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who finished the game in the 30-10 loss to the Saints, will get the start against his former club. Wide receiver MIke Evans won’t be of any help as he will be serving a one-game suspension for slamming Saints defensive back Marshon Lattimore to the ground. His absence is unlikely to make a huge difference.
Minnesota Vikings at Washington Redskins

Atop the NFC North, the Vikings (6-2) can’t afford a miscue. After winning four straight, they are the favorite here on the road against the inconsistent Redskins. Finally quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been cleared to play, but it’s uncertain if he’ll get the nod. This is the first game of a tough five-game stretch for the Vikings with four of them on the road.
Quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Redskins (4-4) showed a little moxey with their impressive 17-14 comeback win at Seattle on Sunday. It was a clutch performance with 94 seconds and two timeouts remaining to move 70 yards for a touchdown. Cousins got the job done no problem. He likely won’t have such luck against the Vikings defense, which is ranked fourth in the NFL, allowing 282.1 yards per game.
Los Angeles Chargers at Jacksonville Jaguars

> Matchup history: Chargers lead 7-2-0
Jaguars coach Doug Marrone doesn’t fool around. He suspended rookie running back Leonard Fournette last Sunday for violating team rules. Marrone sent a message, and the Jaguars (5-3) still won — which is one reason they are favored over the Chargers (3-5), who’ve won their last six games against Jacksonville. Also, Fournette will be back in action. The Jaguars own the NFL’s third-ranked defense (allowing 281.2 yards per game), which features defensive end Calais Campbell who leads the NFL in sacks with 11. The Jaguars are tied with the Titans for the lead in the AFC South.
The Jaguars will provide a big test for 36-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers and the Chargers offense, which features running back Melvin Gordon, who has four touchdowns midway through the season.

Houston Texans at Los Angeles Rams

Each season, the NFL springs a few surprises on the masses. Let’s put the Rams (6-2) in that category. Someone forgot to tell first-year coach Sean McVay this is a rebuilding year. He’s working magic with quarterback Jared Goff, who threw four touchdowns in the 51-17 win over the Giants, the team McVay’s grandfather once coached. Goff had throws of 35, 44, 44, 52, and 67 yards, plus running back Todd Gurley rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
This could have been a great matchup, but that was before Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson tore an ACL, putting a premature end to his season. Tom Savage had an awful outing in the 20-14 loss to the Colts, which Savage called one of the most frustrating games in his career. It’s a huge drop-off — the Texans (3-5) were the highest scoring team in the NFL with Watson.
Dallas Cowboys at Atlanta Falcons

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan put the Falcons on his shoulders last season and took them to the Super Bowl. He has not been the same this season. It’s not all his fault. Still, Atlanta (4-4) is a slight favorite over the Cowboys. Ryan, who is working with a new offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, has matched his interception total from 2016 (seven) already in the first eight games. The Falcons say they don’t want to be counted out of the playoff picture. Four words: Prove it on Sunday.
Don’t look now but the Cowboys (5-3) have won three straight. Running back Ezekiel Elliott may or may not play depending on his appeal for his suspension. He is a huge factor, who had 93 rushing yards in Sunday’s 28-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Dak Prescott continues to impress with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions this year.

New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers

In a matchup of the train wrecks, the Giants (1-7) going for their second win and the 49ers still looking for their first. The edge goes to the Giants, with Eli Manning still in the fight for respectability this season. It was supposed to be a good season for the Giants, but that seems a long time ago when Odell Beckham Jr. was healthy and before the losses started snowballing.
The 49ers (0-9) have lost some close ones, but it doesn’t matter. This might be their best chance to win a game for the rest of this season. If not, they could become the second team in NFL history to finish a season 0-16. The first was the Detroit Lions in 2008. Not good company.

New England Patriots at Denver Broncos

Let’s see, the Patriots (6-2) have a future Hall of Fame quarterback, and the Broncos don’t have a quarterback good enough to compete in the NFL. Edge to the Patriots and Tom Brady. The Patriots have won four straight and show no signs of slowing down. They possess the NFL’s top offense, averaging 411.1 yards per game. Oddly enough, their defense is the NFL’s worst, allowing 417.1 yards per game. Somehow coach Bill Belichick makes it work.
The Broncos GM John Elway, a Hall of Famer, knows a few things about NFL quarterbacks. He just doesn’t know how to find a good one for his Broncos (3-5). He started Brock Osweiler on Sunday after benching Trevor Siemian, and Denver was smoked by the Eagles, 51-23. Osweiler completed just 50% of his passes and also tossed two interceptions. It was their fourth straight loss. Elway has to figure this out or the losing will continue.
Miami Dolphins at Carolina Panthers

> Matchup history: Dolphins lead 4-1-0
Cam Newton compared the Panthers’ offense to the Titanic after wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin was traded. Still, the Benjamin-less Panthers (6-3) beat the Falcons 20-17. It seems when Newton is allowed to run — he had 86 rushing yards in this one — it gives the Panthers a better chance to win. And while the spotlight always seems to be on Newton and his sartorial choices (the hats — what’s with the hats?), the Panthers’ defense is the stingiest in the NFL, allowing just 274.1 yards per game.
The Dolphins (4-4) have dropped two straight, including Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Raiders when Jay Cutler completed a whopping 81% of his passes, including three for touchdowns. One of those was to tight end Julius Thomas, who had his best game of the season with six catches for 84 yards.
