Most Popular Golden Globe Nominated Films

December 12, 2017 by Steven M. Peters

The Golden Globes, which honor notable achievements in film, is the first major awards ceremony of the year. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Monday nominations to the 75th Golden Globe Awards, which will be held on Jan. 7, 2018 at the Beverly Hills Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. In many ways, the Golden Globes set the stage for the Academy Awards.

Compared to many other awards events, the Golden Globes are rather small, recognizing achievements in just 25 categories: 14 in motion pictures and 11 in television. To even be nominated is therefore an honor, and over half of the films with a nomination this year this year received just one nomination. A few standouts received significantly more nominations, such as Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” which received seven nominations.

A film’s audience reception and the number of nominations it received do not always agree – popular movies may not receive even one nomination, while lesser known or loved movies may receive several. 24/7 Wall St. has created an index based on several metrics – including each film’s Rotten Tomatoes’ average critic rating, Rotten Tomatoes’ average audience rating, and Internet Movie Database’s average user rating – in order to rank the movies nominated at this year’s Golden Globes by popularity.

General audiences often value different elements in films than those voting for awards. For instance, the highest Rotten Tomatoes audience score among this year’s nominated films belongs to the light-hearted, animated movie “Coco.” The movie, however, is only up for two Golden Globe awards, including the more minor award of Best Original Song in a motion picture award.

Many of the films nominated this year have either just recently been released, had a limited release, or in some cases – like with Aaron Sorkin’s “Molly’s Game” – have not even been released to the public at all. Such limited general audience visibility can clearly affect audience appreciation ratings.

Still, as the precursor to the Academy Awards, which will be held March 4, many of the winners at the Golden Globes might go on to win at the Academy Awards – and winning an Oscar tends to increase audience appreciation of a film.

To determine the most popular Golden Globe nominated films, 24/7 Wall St. created an index based on each film’s Rotten Tomatoes’ average critic rating, Rotten Tomatoes’ average audience rating, and Internet Movie Database’s average user rating. We averaged the user ratings from Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb and weighted these by the number of votes for each. The combined user rating was then averaged with the Rotten Tomatoes critic rating. Only films with both user ratings and critic ratings were considered. Starring actors for each film came from IMDb, while the nominations for each film came directly from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
