If you’ve been wondering why there is so much fuss about 3D printing, here’s something that may give you an idea of what the technology might be good for. Victoria’s Secret, a division of L Brands Inc. (NYSE: LTD), has designed and printed a pair of 3D printed wings for its upcoming fashion show schedule for broadcast on December 10th.

The design was printed by 3D printing marketplace Shapeways and includes millions of small crystals from jewelry maker Swarovski that give the wings a shimmering effect. Shapeways already prints a variety of fashion items including purses, eyeglass frames, and other accessories.

The outfit was made to fit model Lindsay Ellingson, from whom a 3D scan was made and the wings printed to fit her figure exactly.

There is no indication of which 3D printer maker’s equipment was used to print the wings, but the list of possibilities is short: Stratasys Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSYS), 3D Systems Inc. (NYSE: DDD), The ExOne Co. (NASDAQ: XONE), or Voxeljet AG (NYSE: VJET) are the usual suspects.
