Apple Launches New iPad, iPhones, Video App

March 21, 2017 by Paul Ausick

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) on Tuesday announced a new 9.7-inch iPad, a new (RED) iPhone and a new video-editing app called Clips. The company also announced that it is discontinuing the 32 gigabyte (GB) version of the iPad mini 4 in favor of a single model with 128 GB of memory.

The new iPad with 32 GB of memory sells for $329, an entry-level price, and $70 less than the 128 GB Wi-Fi-only version of the iPad mini 4. This could indicate a desire on Apple’s part to move consumers to the larger iPad as it continues to limit choices for the iPad mini.

The company also introduced a new iPhone (PRODUCT) RED special edition of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in a “vibrant red” aluminum finish. This phone is available in 128 GB and 256 GB models starting at $749. The phones will be available to order on Friday and will begin shipping by the end of the month. The company said that (RED) has generated $465 million from the sale of a variety of vendor products to support Global Fund HIV/AIDS grants for programs in sub-Saharan Africa. Apple Stores alone have generated more than $130 million for the project.

A new version of the entry-level iPhone SE also goes on sale Friday. The new SE, with 32 GB of memory and an A9 processor will sell for $399. With 128 GB of memory the SE will cost $499. The four-inch display form factor is the same as the iPhone 5 and 5s.

The new budget-priced iPad will be available for ordering on Friday and deliveries will begin next week. The Wi-Fi-only model with 32 GB of memory sells for $329 while the Wi-Fi-plus-cellular version with the same amount of memory sells for $459.

The Clips video-editing app is free from at the App Store beginning in April and is compatible with all iPhones from 5s and later, the new 9.7-inch iPad, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPod touch sixth generation devices running iOS 10.3.
