Short Interest in 3D Printing Stocks Drops as Share Prices Jump

Short interest fell during the two-week reporting period ending August 15 on three of four 3D printing stocks we follow. Trading action picked up, however, as days to cover dropped sharply on all four stocks.

Short interest in 3D Systems Corp. (NYSE: DDD) dropped by 11.8% to 28.02 million shares. Some 25.5% of the company’s float was short. Days to cover fell from 14 to five. In the two-week short interest period, the share price soared by nearly 51%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $7.92 to $21.73, and shares closed at $20.91 on Friday, up about 1% on the day.

Stratasys Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSYS) saw short interest fall by 5.2% in the first two weeks of August to about 9.09 million shares or 18.1% of the company’s float. Days to cover fell from 20 to nine. The share price jumped by nearly 22% in the two-week period, and the stock closed at $24.93 on Friday, flat on the day, in a 52-week range of $17.17 to $26.17.

Short interest in The ExOne Co. (NASDAQ: XONE) rose by 2.7% to 2.58 million shares. About 26.6% of the company’s shares were short. ExOne’s share price rose by about 3.7% in the two weeks ending August 15. The stock’s 52-week range is $6.16 to $12.50, and shares closed at $8.48 on Friday, up about 0.8% for the day. Days to cover fell from 26 to 10.

Short interest in Voxeljet A.G. (NYSE: VJET) decreased by 8.3% to 328,587 American depositary shares, with days to cover falling from 17 to six. Voxeljet added about 1% for the two-week period and closed at $4.19 on Friday, up about 21% for the day, in a 52-week range of $3.07 to $6.37.
