Verizon Wireless To Open Network To Outside Phones, Software

In a move that is certain to rock the cell carrier industry, Verizon Wireless, a JV between Verizon (VZ) and Vodafone (VOD) will open its network to phone and software not purchased as part of a calling package.

According to MarketWatch "Verizon Wireless said it will allow customers to buy phones or download software that the company does not support so long as the devices and applications meet certain standards that make them compatible with its network."
