JC Penney, General Electric Fall Into Friday’s 52-Week Low Club

May 12, 2017: Here are four stocks trading with relatively heavy volume among 118 equities making new 52-week lows in Friday’s session. On the NYSE, decliners led advancers by about 9 to 7 and on the Nasdaq decliners led advancers by about 4 to 3.

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) posted a new 52-week low of $4.50 on Friday, down nearly 15% compared with Thursday’s closing price of $5.29. The stock’s 52-week high is $11.30. Volume totaled more than 71 million shares, nearly 4 times the daily average of 18.9 million. The company posted weak results Friday morning.

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) dropped about 3.5% Friday to post a new 52-week  low of $27.85 after closing Thursday at $28.87. The 52-week high is $33.00. Volume of around 51 million shares was approaching double the daily average of around 29 million. The company’s stock was downgraded this morning at Deutsche Bank from Hold to Sell.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) dropped about 1% Friday to post a new 52-week low of $10.90 after closing at $11.01 on Thursday. The stock’s 52-week high is $14.04. Volume was about 30% below the daily average of around 39 million shares. The company had no specific news Friday.

Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M) dropped about 3% Friday to post a new 52-week low of $23.60 after closing at $24.35 on Thursday. The stock’s 52-week high is $45.41. Volume of more than 16 million was more than double the daily average of around 7 million shares traded. The department store company reported weak quarterly results Thursday morning and investors are not finished administering punishment.
