Top Costume Choices for Halloween

October 27, 2016 by Paul Ausick

Americans will spend $3.1 billion on Halloween costumes this year, more even than the $2.5 billion they’ll spend on candy. About two-thirds of Halloween shoppers will be buying costumes while about 94% will be buying candy. But candy is cheaper than the costumes

Costume choices don’t change much from year to year, but there has been a significant development in children’s costume choice. Action/Superhero costumes have dethroned Princess costumes as the top choice for children, ending an 11-year reign. According to the National Retail Federation, The superhero trend is really being driven by 18- 34 year olds. Slasher movie costumes are also popular with this group.

Adults over 35 prefer more classic costumes such as witches, pirates and vampires. In an election year it’s no big surprise that political costumes are trending strongly with this group. And not to forget our pets, pumpkins and hot dogs are perennial favorites for pet costumes, and lion costumes gaining momentum, up from 16th to 4th since last year.
